Volumetrics

Volumetrics is a term coined from the book The Volumetrics Weight-Control Plan : Feel Full on Fewer Calories by Dr Barbara Rolls and Robert Barnett. This book was first published at the end of 2000 but continues to be popular to date.

The Essence of Volumetrics

Volumetrics is a concept rather than a prescription. That concept is the energy density and satiety of a food. Many foods are energy dense – that is – they supply a high number of calories per low volume. If we can learn to choose foods that are less energy dense – we will feel satisfied with our food, and ultimately eat less calories (leading to weight loss or weight management).

volumetrics-dietVolumetrics suggests a number of foods (that are generally higher in fiber and water content) that are satisfying and less calorie-dense. Volumetrics isn’t so much about a restrictive diet plan as it is about learning appropriate portion sizes by choosing the right foods. The concept is well regarded among the medical community.

Which Foods Are Encouraged?

  • Fibrous vegetables and fruit
  • Lean meats
  • Whole wheat pasta
  • Brown Rice
  • Oatmeal

Volumetrics also emphasizes foods that have a high water content (thus more satisfying). Foods such as stews, soups, casseroles, low-fat milks.

Most processed foods tend to be more energy dense and should be eaten in moderation.

Lots of good common-sense backed up by serious professional research.

Volumetrics was the inspiration for the “Core” program which is one of the Weight Watchers plans. I lost nearly 30 lbs. doing this program, and I can attest that it is quite workable!
