Bistro MD Diet Delivery Review

 By Mizpah Matus B.Hlth.Sc(Hons)

Bistro M.D. is a diet food delivery company which delivers through-out the USA.

They claim to offer chef designed meals that have been doctor approved. They call this “The Foodie & The M.D.”.

Beside meals, Bistro has a team standing by to support those on their diet delivery program:

  • bistro-mdHelp from Doctor Cederquist through webinars and articles.
  • A personal dietician to answer your questions.
  • Workout tips and programs provided by a personal trainer.

This is all available via a members only extensive website.

Overall, the meal plans they offer are high in protein and low in carbohydrates, averaging just under 1200 calories a day for women.

There are several levels of service to choose from based on your needs and life-style, but the two most popular options are listed below.

Packaging, Delivery and Service

Bistro M.D. delivers a weeks worth of meals to your doorstep via FedEx. The food comes frozen with dry ice in an insulated cardboard box.

Our Taste Test

dinnerMy order of a weeks worth of food arrived when they promised and was still frozen and well packaged.

The food was frozen and packed by meal so it was easy to sort it out according to the printed menu provided. The non-perishable snacks and breakfast items were in a separate box located with in the main package.

All food was in perfect condition except for the tray of waffles which was cracked, with the waffles broken up.

We called customer service about this and the very polite and helpful woman apologized and said I could receive a replacement or credit on my next order.

All meals had clear labels with ingredients and nutritional information included.

Most food was packaged in cardboard and vacuum sealed plastic pouches with some food in sealed plastic trays. There were thick polystyrene squares lining the main box to keep the food frozen. I again called the polite customer service to see if these were recollected and re-used by Bistro MD. I was told that I could re-use them, but they were not re-used or collected by Bistro.

Sample Menu

Protein Bagel served with cream cheese.
Morning Snack
Pineapple and orange low calorie, high protein shake.
Whole Wheat Penne Pasta Served with our own Vodka Sauce, Mixed Vegetables.
Afternoon Snacks
BBQ Crunch O’s
Chicken Cordon Blue – Classic French Chicken stuffed with savory ham and low fat cheese. Served with brown rice, mixed vegetables and a side of haricots verts.

Preparation Required

lunchBistro M.D.’s food is prepared by using a microwave or hot water bath.

All meals can be re-heated in the microwave, but only the vacuum sealed items can be heated using the hot water bath method.

It is recommended that the foods be defrosted first before using the microwave method.

Best Dishes

The best meals I sampled were the Spinach and Feta Stuffed Chicken Breast and the Pork Tenderloin with Apple Cider Sauce. Both meals were flavorful and the side dishes were fresh and tasty.

Worst Dishes

The only meal that I would not want to eat again was The Count of Monte Cristo Sandwich with the Butternut Squash Puree. It was mainly just luncheon meat with cheese and syrup and the squash dish reminded me of baby food.

Dr Phil has endorsed Bistro MD on his show — and has used the service a number of times to help overweight guests on his show. Jillian Michaels has also recommended the diet (on the show The Doctors).

In a recent blind taste test on ABC7 – Bistro MD was chosen over 3 other services (Diet-to-go, Jenny Craig, eDiets).

Quality Food and Service

Overall, I would recommend Bistro as a good choice for dieters who have difficulty controlling portion size and counting calories.

The majority of the food was enjoyable to eat and easy to prepare.

I really liked the meals that could be prepared using the hot water bath method. They tasted fresh and as if I prepared them from scratch. However, the microwave meals didn’t really stand out and tasted much like any other microwavable frozen meal from the grocery store. The meals were well seasoned yet low in sodium.

The only recommendation I would make is to pick the option without snacks so that you could supplement the plan with fresh fruits and vegetables.

I did not like the Bistro “automatic renewal” system for ordering. They don’t have an option for specifically ordering for must one week or two weeks. They should provide different options for those who don’t want to be on it every week. WHAT IS CRAZY IS THEY CHARGED ME BEFORE I GOT MY FOOD. When I called saying I didn’t want any more…they said they would “TRY” to stop it! I didn’t care for the food and was not happy when I got more food. I think they need to make people aware when they order any food that they will be sending you more…FEEL LIKE THIS IS A SCAM!!!

I wanted so much to love ,or at least be satisfied, with the Bistro MD plan. I received a nicely packaged delivery, packed freshly in dry ice.
I was excited to open it and find out what healthy , tasty meals had been sent my way. I began day one with great enthusiasm and did enjoy my egg white omelette with ham and berry compote. I was surprised to find I also enjoyed the protein drinks which I initially thought i would hate!! But from there, it only went downhill. I followed the directions to thaw each meal in the refrigerator overnight only to find that no matter what I tried, the meals were quite watery…ugh! This certainly did not help the already extremely bland flavors. I tried to struggle through the first four days and it was almost unbearable! I felt sick to my stomach eating watery spinach and rubbery, flavorless sweet potato pieces for almost every meal. Let me say that I have also tried Nutrisystem, which I stopped because of the huge amount of preservatives in their shelf stable entrees. So, This is not my first diet meal delivery experience. Although NS had several clear “misses” with their entrees, overall, the taste was much better then Bistro MD. I feel quite puzzled by the people who claim this is the best tasting meal delivery program because, clearly, it isn’t . Perhaps many of these are paid reviews ?The portions are generous and I did feel full after each meal, but I couldn’t even make it through a week. YUCK!!!!!!! Furthermore, it is NOT a balanced diet ,as it contains almost no fruit and virtually no dairy. I give this a huge thumbs down and would encourage others to be wary of the overly glowing reviews.

I personally reviewed Bistro about 3 years ago and the meals were great then. Perhaps we need to review them again.. Your experience sounds nothing like what I experienced. They didn’t even use protein shakes when I tried them.

Hello! I have tried Diet-To-Go, BistroMd and eDiets Home Meal Delivery Plans, and am currently on the Diet-To-Go 1,600 Calories/day Traditional Plan…

I can honestly say that My Hubby and I tried the food from each of these services and that the BEST is definitely the Diet-To-Go! It isn’t at all bland, TASTES FRESH and VERY GOOD, offers many great substitutions, offers everyday food that one would actually crave, and is the cheapest of these 3. The people there are helpful and friendly too if you have any questions of concerns. And they do offer credits if your order is wrong and I believe they also do if you didn’t like a meal, although I have never asked for that because I don’t feel it’s their fault if something just didn’t taste good to me. They also make it extremely easy to do most anything from their website including stopping and restarting your plan whenever you choose, which is very convenient! Their website is the best of all 3 and again the food is fabulous! Plus you get the option of either 5 or 7 day plans with 1,200 or 1,600 calories per day with the Traditional Low Fat Plan and they also offer a Low Carb Plan and a Vegetarian Plan. Also you can choose to have Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner or just Lunch and Dinner. My hubby and I are thoroughly impressed with Diet-To-Go and highly recommend it to anyone wanting to eat a more balanced healthy diet or for weight loss. This food is seriously excellent and worth the money!

BistroMD wasn’t at all bad, but was too bland for us. They did allow you to add or remove certain meals or ingredients, but it was more fancy foods that frankly we are not into. Plus it was more expensive and you didn’t get your choice of omitting breakfast or different calorie plans although did also offer 5 and 7 days plans. I don’t think they offer Low Carb or Vegetarian Plans either. And I felt the meals seemed more repetitious than Diet-To-Go. There seemed to be a lot of very similar meals with only a small change to it, like a different sauce or something. One thing about BistroMD though is they have the NICEST people working there! Also they are very good about cancellation and setting any billing errors straight. I can say I would recommend BistroMD, it just wasn’t as good as Diet-To-Go, in our opinions.

And then there’s eDiets… That was just terrible all the way around! Bad customer service, deceptive fees for cancelling, the food was not at all good and the portions were tiny. Didn’t taste fresh AT ALL! I would never use this service again and would never recommend it. Even using the online only plan is a pain! They don’t take cancellations lightly and if you use ANY offer code and cancel before 28 days, you WILL get charged the ENTIRE amount of whatever the offer was upon cancellation. I found a code for 50% off the first week and within a day of receiving my first order, I cancelled because it was extremely disappointing. When I called to cancel the girl told me because I used an offer code and was cancelling before 28 days, that my credit card would be charged the entire amount of the food. I was angry and told her that I read the agreement before signing up and never saw that anywhere (which is the truth!) but she stated it is there and that I would have to pay the remaining amount. At that point I didn’t care and just wanted to be done with this dishonest company and their barely edible food. I will NEVER use ANY of their services again!
