The Cabbage Soup Diet is a 7 day meal plan, aimed at achieving fast weight loss. It is not a long-term weight loss solution, but is known to be effective over the short term. Apparently it originally came from a hospital (Sacred Hearts Hospital) to stimulate weight loss for surgery patients - but this cannot be verified.

The biggest drawback of the Cabbage Soup diet plan is the sheer monotony of eating cabbage soup. However some diets (such as the negative calorie diet) basically look at the nutritional properties of the cabbage soup diet, and make it more interesting by combining other foods that have the same effect.
There are also serious concerns regarding the nutritional quality of this diet. On many days the diet is low in protein, calcium, and essential fatty acids. There also high levels of sodium or MSG (Monosodium Glutamate).
Weight loss will probably occur due to the low calorie intake.

This diet is great- I have used it several times , one week at a time. I have lost 10- 15 pounds. It is a good way to jump start your body to losing weight or to reach a goal for a special event. To make the diet have variety– I make the soup without putting in the dry onion soup mix. After the soup is made I take out a portion for each day and change the seasoning. I put in Italian seasoning– basil, oregano, etc and have Italian soup. For another day — I use Curry or Mexican type seasoning. This gives me a variety so I don’t get bored.
I think this diet is brilliant- you must be doing something wrong if you are gaining weight!!

I have used this diet as your supposed to, and then every other week for 6 weeks now and i have lost 25lbs. There are so many variations you can do with this diet that it actually becomes very tasty.

I have used this a couple of times. the first time I made the mistake of not being creative with the soup of the veggies. Just raw veggies will turn you off so quick. Use your imagination - salads, cooked veggies etc…will permit you to complete the program and lose. don’t cheat and it works - by day three the cabbage will have the undesirable effect on your digestive tract though.

This diet is great. It’s amazing what a week can do. I notice a difference in my pants, you know the ones you have to squeeze into, well squeeze no more Jessie. I popped a button on my favorite white shirt, and after one week of this diet I was able to sew that button back on and hey I’m a hott mama again. It works just stick with it, you will make it I know.
I have done this diet once before, it really helps me to get a jump start and keep up with a low starch, no white sugar or flour nutrition plan. I do not follow the recipe for soup, I add alot of different vegetables, bay leaves and use low sodium chicken stock. Had tough time on day 4, but believe due to an excessive physical routine. I had success in losing 6 pounds last year and am on day 6, at a loss of 5 pounds!
this diet was not good at all. The taste was horrible. Our grandmas that make everything without salt or and seasoning make better soups than this. Don’t recommend at all. Oh and weight wise, we lost about 2 pounds the first 2 days but is not worth it for that bad taste!

This diet works, I did it about 10 years ago and lost 80 pounds in just 8 weeks(along with walking)…it takes A LOT of will power, try onlu eating the cabbage soup if you get hungry and all the other time eat the other foods. Also try nibbling all day on the veggies(carrots, celery, etc.) this will help no be hungry. I am getting ready for a wedding and so I am on the diet again now!
Brilliant soup, I have just finished the 7th day and I have lost 5kg like I supposed to. Now I will try to loose more weights because this has given me the courage to go on loosing weights. From reading other people that have tried this soup, I will eat the soup every other weeks like someone has done and see if I should loose 12 kg. brilliant soup.
This diet is a great way to start better eating habits. It helps to prevent those junk food habits and after the seven days you can begin to eat healther. I love it. This is the only diet I would recommend to anyone that is having trouble starting or diet or just want to change their bad eating habits.

I am finishing my 3rd day. I am feeling great! I am not sure about my weight, but I have energy and it is helping to change some of my bad eating habits. Be creative with spices and make sure soup is pureed.
I have done this a couple of times, its deffo not for a long term thing but, to kick start a weight loss/exercise programme its perfect. But, must admit got to day 6 and struggle as I hate brown rice, the rest of it is quite enjoyable to follow but big tip - THE MORE SOUP YOU EAT THE MORE YOU LOOSE…..
I would call the soup vegetable more than cabbage. If you spice it up with fresh herbs and tobasco sauce it tastes divine. I started it today and will keep you posted. Also I like the idea of eating fuit as an added variation as well..

I am on my 4th day of the cabbage soup diet and already seeing results. I have a lot of energy and have noticed much less bloating than I had before, from eating a lot of carbs. The soup isn’t bland - you just have to “spice” it up with different seasonings and make it your own. Very pleased!

I am on this diet and i am on 3 and its not so bad. The first day i ate my soup at least 3 times and the second day i took it to work for lunch and had it for dinner. Right now i am sitting at my desk and having it for lunch with my veggies and fruits and then i guess i will have it for dinner. Do i need to eat it more then twice aday??
This diet works, but it grossed me out. It gives you gas VERY BAD! I only lasted on this diet about a week. Its hard to have a social life and the farts at the same time.

THIS DIET IS THE BEST!!! I lost 13 pounds in 2 weeks and I have a clear mind, I can think better, I’m more social and I love life more than I did before. It boosts your mental mind and I love it!! I agree it gets boring after a while but I’ve heard that after your second time, give yourself 1 week to get off the diet and start the diet again however, add real chicken stock in the soup. Hope you try the soup, it does works!!
Today is my first day. I’m hoping to loose seven pounds. I am going to walk each day. It makes sense if you deposit less in the bank (calories) and take more out (walking at a regular pace for 30 mins) the account should be overdrawn (drop some pounds) by day seven .

This Diet is definitely good for losing a few pounds quickly. I have done it about 4-5 times in the past 3 years and lost anywhere from 5 to 7 pounds each time. A variation to the diet that I have always done (may be a part of a similar diet)is on Day 4, which I am on today, you are allowed to eat ‘All Bran’ cereal as well.

–I think you are supposed to have the soup ‘at least once’ every day.
You will loose the weight, however you cant end day seven and start day eight with a craze of just any thing you want to eat, the diet works, but you have to watch your intake of food after the diet is over
The gas and diahrrea is horrible but……..its working and I spice the soup up a little by adding hot sauce to it. I’m on the 3rd day and I have lost 3lbs haven’t lost any inches yet thats what I am aiming for but it will come in time. It’s overall a good diet but I’m sure I am going to have to watch what I eat after I’m off it, and I would really like some damn beer……..

On day Five and have lost 6 lbs! (163 to 157). It really works! All you have to do is change the soup’s flavor/taste with herbs and spices. Just do something different with it everyday so that you dont get bored. This is my second time on the diet, the first time I lost a total of 11 pounds and kept it off.
I did this diet about 12 yers ago and lost about 15 or 20 lbs. I am on it again because I need to lose weight. For anyone who says this is a bland soup, you must not be adding enough seasoning. It does take will power to stay on it, but it is worth the weight loss.
I am not overweight but have gained a few kilos over the last year so i tried this diet and have slightly adjusted it and still get good results. I eat porridge (oatmeal sachets with fruit , with low fat milk) in the morning and then follow the plan daily as stated and it works!
The oatmeal gives you extra energy and is really good for you also and helps stop you from giving up on the soup diet entirely. Also it is low in calories and fat, but gives you loads of energy.
Also i leave the tomatoes out of the soup and i find it tastes a lot better as i could no longer stand the smell and taste.
If you don’t think you can last on this diet as it is or want to adjust it then pick a few extra healthy options, for variety.
If you want a more sustainable weight and lifestyle change, then i think implementing this soup and the vege, fruit, lean meat is the way to go along with other healthy choices and lots of exercise. Oatmeal is great, in the mornings, and the best thing to do is cut out sugar. Also if you make the options more reasonable and varied then you are more likely to really lose weight and not just water weight along with keeping it off including exercise daily.

This diet really works, but it is really hard to stick too. By the way if you gain weight it may be from eating too much after the diet. If you continue to eat really fatty foods after the diet then you will gain the weight back!
okay first of all you people who say that you are gaining weight from it is probly because you did not finish it and are jealous about the people who did me personally did this diet and lost weight even i did not stick to it all the way because i hate tomatoes but i still lost weight but i am gonna try it again so all you peole who want to do this just suck it up and do it you will thank me. and after it eats healthy foods don’t go and eat macdonalds or like cake or cookies seriously don’t it will screw it up

This is a great way to cleanse your body. I add squash, zucchini, etc. I also pep it up with cayenne and the Spicy V8 Juice. Yes, it does work… as do most diets out there if people just stay on them as recommended!! People in life are such quitters.
On my First Day, i think it will be fine, i added spices to mine and liquidized it, taste pretty good. see how much i can loose !

this diet worked great for me about 10 years ago. I lost 20 pounds in 14 days. You have to drink about a gallon of water a day and work out about 40 minutes daily if you really want the weight to fall off. I changed the diet too. I added hot peppers/crushed red peppers and I used fat free chicken broth and sea salt. For work, I sliced all the veggies and brought a packet of Sazon seasoning so I could microwave it fresh. Don’t make too much at a time. It will get mushy and you wouldn’t want to eat it. Prep everything ahead of time and you’ll be ok.
I am a man and tried it because 7 women at work did it together and ALL of them lost at least 7 lbs. The ranges were 7-12 lbs. (the 12 is a VERY big girl). All of them also KEPT THE WEIGHT OFF too by eating more carefully. Anyway, after 3 days I lost nothing. But, now I am at the end of day four and all of a sudden I am down 3 LBS! WOW! Stick it out- that’s what they all keep telling me- and they’re right! Also, remember that when you eat right one day, it takes your body a while to burn the fat off- usually 1 1/2 days. I am thinking that I will lose at LEAST 5 lbs. with 3 1/2 days to go- hopefully more! This diet is awesome (but not easy at all). Sweeeet! Have will power baby! P.S. I was about 25 lbs. overweight when I started and am skeptical no more.

Hi everyone. I am a healthy eater and so far have lost 3 lbs own. But, I have decided to start the cabbage soup diet because I want to lose weight (faster) for my trip to Jamaica at the end of this month. I will tell you how it all goes. Even after i stop. But, I remember my mom doing it when I was young and it worked for her and with careful eating afterwards she has not gained the weight back.

Tomarrow I am making a low sodium enchilada sauce to add to the soup base and adding a vegie salsa (its veggie day 2) I am really doing this for my hubby. OMG You guys have to try this if you have a sweet tooth or getting bored of the fruit. Get a bag of “frozen” fruit. Put it in the blender with cranberry juice. It makes a great fruit slushy and will definitely fix your craving for something sweet. I could live on these things! I also added chili perrers and extra chicken bouillon to my soup today. NOTHING bland about it!
Tip for Ya! Get Creative. On Fruit days try a bag of frozen mixed fruit. Put a couple of cups in a blender with your crandberry juice. Make a nice fruit slushie!

i just finished my second yr of college, and like most college students gained freshmen 10 my 1st year. It’s been a pain losing weight. Well,I’m back home for the summer, and my mom insisted on going on this diet. Today is day 1, I’m not a big fan, but I’m going to try and stick it out, and see if I can really lose some weight. I don’t have a whole lot to loose, but I would still like to cleanse my system. Hope it’s working for everyone else.
This is a good diet. About 12 years ago I went on this diet. I lost 17lbs the first time, went off for a week and went back on and lost 13lbs, went off for a week and went back on and lost 10lbs. All of this was without exercise. I have been sick for the last year and 1/2 and have gain over 100 lbs and will be having surgery in about a month. So I am going on this diet again. I am hoping to loose at least 35lbs before my surgery. Thie diet is a good starting point, then you have to watch what you eat and exercise to balance it. Every now in then you can do the first three days of the diet that helped me also. I beleive if I had not gotten sick I would no need this diet now.

This is very refreshing to read. I’m on day 3 and was thinking of giving up! I’ve down it before and lost a lot of weight, but now it’s just killing me! I think i need to add a little more seasonign to the soup, and maybe some chicken stock-earlier i was worried about it being fattening. Is it?

hi, im on this diet now. on day three. i’ve lost 5lbs so far. but today i was feeling extremely constipated and my tummy was hurting so i had a bowl of fibre cereal. ive been swimming a mile everyday so im hoping it will help. i will keep u updated on how much i lose at the end of the week (even though cheated a little today!)

Just read all the comments and am going out to buy the ingredients for the soup! I need to jumpstart some weightloss and iI think that by droppping a large amount that first week will hopefully motivate me to keep going!
Well, I’m on day five. I have lost a total of 8 pounds but must say it isn’t easy. The hardest part by the 5th day is finding the stomache to eat another bowl of the soup. My goal was 10 pounds and I’m reaching it, but one does have to tow-the-line with this diet. I have been weak but hope once back on a sensible diet that I will fell a bit more like myself. Overall though, if I have to I would do it again, but thank goodness my goal weight loss is only 15 pounds.
I love it! The soup is totally filling and nutritious as long as you take a multi I can’t see how a few days without protein/fat/ can hurt. Certainly better than the junk most people consume.
I have loads of energy, have lost 2lbs in 6 days (exercising too) and after tomorrow will integrate into our normal diet by adding chicken and brown rice to make a stew and beans to make a chilli.
Highly reccommend especially for obese people - take one week off eating all that refined crap and clean out your system and you will not want to go back to the junk!

I am on day two and feeling just ok. I had terrible headache yesterday and managed to sleep over it. Today I baked the vegetables in olive oil and ate them with tsaziki. Hope that works ok.

i remember 10 years ago losing 6kg in a week, hope the result are the same this time around even if i am in my 30’s now.
on day 5 of this diet and have lost 11 pounds so far. on my first beef day i scrambled some ground beef and put it in my bowl of soup, good. first day was not so bad, second day kind tuff, after that not too bad until tody i got dizzy and had a headache but it passed. i’m determined to finish this, have not cheated. may do it again soon.

I wonder why some people didn’t lose weight with this diet. For me it was magic, I lost 9 Kg , I did it for 3 weeks continiousely and I feel great, full of Energy and I start hating the sweets.

I’m on my seventh and last day. I’ve noticed the weight loss already but I don’t know how much because I didn’t check before starting. The diet is really good if you can stick to it (just 7 days). I don’t think I lost as much as I should but that is probably because I didn’t follow it strictly - got a bit bored with the soup halfway through so didn’t drink as much as I probably should’ve. I will definitely do it again in 2 weeks time!

I did this diet before and lost 17lb in 12 days! But I did gain the weight back. Now I’m doing it again but once I get off the diet I am going to watch what I eat so I can keep the pounds off. This diet does work!!!! The 4th day is a killer with the bananas and the milk! lol But I did it!

I posted 3 weeks ago. As i mentioned I lost 10 pounds when I did it. 2 Weeks have passed, I haven’t gained what I lost, so i started again, trying to go for 10 more pounds. I following it religiously but today I weight the same. I haven’t lost any weight. It is my 3rd day. Any recommendations? Hopefully, tomorrow I’ll weight less. Has anybody gone tru this the second time?

I started this diet today and I love it so far, I added many veggies, basil, parsley, cilantro, also salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder. The soup is delicious!!! I did this diet about 10 years ago and I lost 25 lbs, I was really young and gained it back. I don’t think I’ll loose that much weight again because my mom used to seriously put water, cabbage, salt, adn onion to the soup. It was so nasty, we added so much red hot to it just to swallow the nastiness, but my sister and I made it today and it is so delicious!!! YUM. I hope I can loose 20 lbs in 2 weeks. I start the nursing program at school and everyone says they gain weight and I just want to get a jump start!! Wish me luck thanks!!
i dont know what you negative guys are talking about, i lost weight and i cheated a couple days so just because you dont have will power, dont blame diet because your husband left you and ur a fat slob. stop eating and you wont be so fat you losers.
For those that were mentioning the heachaches you should probably pay attention to what seasonings you are usuing. A lot of people are sensitive to MSG and get headaches when consume it.
Those who were gaining weight should probably check the salt content of the broth & seasonings they were using. All of that extra salt can definatly make you bloat and gain water weight.

First time lost 12 pounds but gained 7 back in three weeks. started again and lost 4 pounds the first day. Hope to lose at least 12 total by week end.
Im on my 2nd day and Im finding the lack of carbs hard. And the gas has just started its quite terrible. But I am determined Are you supposed to feel this bloated? i’ve done once this diet and i couldn’t stick to it more than 5 days, i’m doing it again now and i’m on my day 6 and lost 4 kls! i must say this diet does work is impossible someone follow it and don’t loose anything, if u didn’t loose is because u haven’t done it properly! i must say had a headache for the first 3 days and today i feel a little bit week, and to be honest, i can’t stand looking at it anymore! but as you see the weight going away you get determined to finish it. i have been eating only the soup and nothing else, now i want to try for another week but eating some vegetables and fruits! i’m just not sure what to do to keep the weight off i you have any ideas u can contact me please. romula1983@hotmail.com
i did this diet bout 8yrs ago i lost loads of weight size 16 dwn 2 a 8!!i was stil at school tho n i was walkn alot, but now im almost 23 n had put alot of weight on after havin my child 3yrs ago tbh ive doubled in size without lying! im guna start on monday n not sayn how long 4 i was finkn mayb do it strictly 4 a couple of weeks then sum days av only soup n ovas eat normal foods if dat makes sense?

People, it depends on how much of this soup you eat a day if you eat like 12 bowls of it, your gonna get fat, you can’t rely on filling yourself’s up with this and thinking your going to be a supermodel the next day. It doesn’t work like that, you have to control how much you eat.
why do you have to drink so much water? isn’t the soup mostly water anyways?
My grandmother used to eat this soup all the time! She lost alot of weight I think around 40 pounds or so. I tried it also with her and lost about 12 the first week. This diet does work but it gives you some side effects like gas and lots of bowel movements. Do not use this diet every week!!! If you do decide to use it skip a week or two in between.
My husband has lost weight on this in the past and I can never match him. I’m 64 years old and have put on way too much weight so hoping to loose some on this diet.
I don’t understand why people think this is an unhealthy diet. It is packed with fruits and vegetables and even protein on the milk and meat days. Many people consume a lot of fast food and junk food, which are sorely lacking in fresh fruits and vegetables, yet do they worry about an unhealthy diet? Apparently not.
My 37 year old son loves this diet. He has been on it for 2 months (he doesn’t eat the soup) and has lost 24 pounds. He looks so much better.
it worket the first time I was on it- i was on anly 3 days (went drinking on the last night, but still lost 2.5kgs and never got them back!
However- this time, I follow EVERY rule and on a day 4- have not lost a single pound.. why is that??

uhh i never tried this diet but from the looks of it it doesn’t work out to well and people didn’t like it too much… myabe if people just not ate so much and ate healthier and excercised more, than maybe this world wouldn’t get so fat so fast… just a thought && theory.

It is only for 7 days, not for the rest of your life! If one did this 24/7 and 365 days, then YES it is unhealthy. Get a grip and stop hating! I need to loose 20lbs, but I want to loose 30. I am starting next week 10/14/2008 then after that I may do it again 2 weeks later. When I hit my goal weight I will follow the Atkins plan to teach me how to eat better and healthier along with exercise.
This diet worked for me. I lost ten pounds in one week.
And, Memieko, the ingredients in the soup are mostly ‘negative calorie’ foods, so you can essentially eat all you want and you won’t gain weight, no matter what your intuitions about food tell you.
Try eating celery all day and tell me if you gain 20 pounds. You won’t.
This is my 2nd time on the diet. The first time I lost 15lbs. After my 4th day is when i noticed the weight lost . After the 7th day i lost 9lbs and then a week later I lost 8 more lbs making it a total of 15lbs.I have always been a fan of fruits and veggies but this diet definitly takes alot of will power. Spice it up like everyone else says and it will definitly work. I even had a beer while i was on the diet, although i would not recommend it and i will not have one this time but you really just have to follow the plan.

This diet really does work, first time I tried it I lost 10 pounds, Im going back on it tomorrow, just like any other program first you must have will power second you cant CHEAT. I lost total of 20 pounds with the cabbage soup and on my off days I stick with healthy diet. Nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it.
If the cabbage soup dont work for you. then try the three day diet i had luck with this program as well.
i went on this diet in high school for two weeks and lost seventeen pounds… i dont have a scale this time… but im on day 3 and i definately feel a bit different… same funny feelin in my stomach as last time but i know that it will be worth it in the end… reading about the girl that lost 80 pounds in four weeks made me a lot more motivated…
the soup’s smell was overbaring… i felt like i ooozed cabbage/onion smells
My mom did this diet and lost like 20 pounds after 2 weeks, she looked really good after shedding all those pounds. I am starting it today, after my baby I am 30 pounds overweight. Losing 10-15 would be a great start.
A colleague was recommended to do this diet to lose weight before under-going serious surgery. He lost loads of weight, the surgery went well and he looks fantastic.

I just wanted to correctly inform all of you curious diet doubters about this particular diet. First and foremost, this diet is a dream come true! I started the diet 7 days ago and followed it religiously, the said 17lbs fell off me like a prom dress!
I took the time to read every single comment on this page before I put in my two cents.
The diet is a low cal diet restricting you from fatty foods that cling to your body. When I first started this diet I thought to myself, “How the hell am I going to eat piss soup, fruits and veggies for 7 whole days? Better yet, BANANA DAY??!!!!” Little did I know, until the next morning I lost 8lbs after banana day! Well, now that my day off the diet has arrived, McDonald’s is all what it’s cracked up to be.
If you have faith in this diet and follow it perfectly, you will be 17lbs lighter, fitting in your skinny jeans, having compliments thrown at you left and right, you will have better sex with your partner, you will notice that you sit in front of the mirror and hit on yourself! But best of all you have a feeling of accomplishment and self control. Once you have officially tackled your first week you will feel like you can move mountains. You will find yourself taking on new challenging projects that will better yourself in so many ways!
I have been yo-yo dieting for 8 years. Life is not easy for me, my mom died 3 months ago…so accomplishing things in the last few months has not been happening up until now. Now that I’m 17lbs lighter , I want to be another 17lbs lighter. That is why I’ve took one day off and I’m getting right back on the diet tomorrow! I’m so much closer to where I want to be! I’m not trying to be shallow, rather influence the nay sayers before they completely disregard this diet. I know how hard it is to feel out of control and miserable when you think of how far you have spun out of control. So don’t let another day of self regret and loath for yourself pass by! Days add up, quick!
All in all, I had to express my love for this diet and how amazing it works! I also don’t want people to hate themselves or there lives because they feel like they can’t say no to the meat lovers pizza! Once you’ve gottan past the the third day, discipline becomes your middle name and taking care of yourself becomes addicting.
Personally I am using this diet to get rid of the initial weight , once I have reached my goal weight I’m going to switch over to a low calorie diet that shares the same principles as the Cabbage Soup Diet. I will incorporate exercise and modify, modify, modify. But my goals seem very attainable and I have a love for life again! If anybody wants to talk about this diet with me or needs reassuring or even help figure out a diet that works after you’ve reached your goal weight please feel free to e-mail me! Well after that last post I feel recharged. I am currently on day 4 ( banana and milk GAG) but today is actually the most full that I have felt since I started this diet. I have currently lost 7 lbs and I am STOKED!! I did this once before after I had my daughter and only made it 3 days and then gave up, but I am determined to get through it this time! After all, it is only 7 days, and if I take it 7 days at a time, I will be at my goal weight in no time! I modified the soup a bit and I cook the cabbage separate from the soup and then add it when I am about to eat the soup. I found the soup tasted MUCH better this way and isn’t sooo stinky! I don’t mind the soup, but I also don’t eat a ton of it either, I try and have 2 bowls a day and it seems to be working just fine. I have been constipated though which I find kind of weird since I am eating a lot of veggies and drinking a ton of water. Anyway, three more days to go!! I cant wait to see the final results! I already feel thinner and its only half way through my 4 day!! So my advice is to stay focused and when you feel like cheating think about what you want more…to be skinny, or chips?? I choose skinny!

I’ve followed this diet exactly as I’m supposed to. I’m on day four and have gained three pounds. I also haven’t had the bathroom problems I’m reading about, so maybe that’s why I’m gaining weight! Please give me advise. The diet itself is easy for me to stay on, but I’m bloated and gaining weight! Will the weight go away by the end of day 7?
