The Grapefruit Diet is a weight loss diet built solely around the humble grapefruit.
The idea that a single item of food has miraculous weight loss properties seems a farce. The grapefruit is a marvelous fruit - a natural simple carbohydrate high in fibre and vitamin C. But to use it as the sole foundation of a weight loss program is unwise. However recent research has discovered that the grapefruit has more to it than meets the eye.
A lot of the grapefruit diet plans that have been circulating are very low calorie diet plans (VLCD’s) with a grapefruit thrown in. VLCD’s are not a good weight loss solution for many people. Most versions of the Grapefruit diet are identical to the Mayo Clinic Diet.
Below is the outline of the fad diet - and it IS NOT RECOMMENDED. Note that there is also substantial evidence that grapefruit (unlike any other citrus fruit) can interfere with medication.
12 days on - 2 days off
Breakfast
1/2 Grapefruit or 4 oz. Grapefruit Juice (unsweetened)
2 Eggs (any style)
2 Slices Bacon
Lunch
1/2 Grapefruit or 4 oz. Grapefruit Juice (unsweetened)
Meat (any style, any amount)
Salad (any kind of dressing)
Dinner
1/2 Grapefruit or 4 oz. Grapefruit Juice (unsweetened)
Meat (any style, any amount) (fish may be substituted for meat)
Vegetables (any green, yellow, or red vegetables cooked in butter or any seasoning)
Bed Time Snack
1 glass tomato juice or 1 glass Skim milk
Vegetables Allowed
Red onions, green onions, bell peppers, radishes, cucumbers, broccoli, spinach, lettuce, cabbage, carrots, peas.
Vegetables to Avoid
White onions, potatoes, celery.
Instructions
The traditional grapefruit diet consists of a 7 or 21 day eating plan. 1/2 a grapefruit is consumed during breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Recently the Scripps clinic, based in San Diego carried out a clinical trial and discovered the following:
“The 12-week pilot study, led by Dr. Ken Fujioka, monitored weight and metabolic factors, such as insulin secretion, of the 100 men and women who participated in the Scripps Clinic “Grapefruit Diet” study. On average, participants who ate half a grapefruit with each meal lost 3.6 pounds, while those who drank a serving of grapefruit juice three times a day lost 3.3 pounds. However, many patients in the study lost more than 10 pounds….. The researchers speculate that the chemical properties of grapefruit reduce insulin levels and encourage weight loss.”
By all means include grapefruit in your diet - it may give you an edge. But for serious and sustained weight loss - look elsewhere.

Yeah, the idea of the grapefruit diet doesn’t seem to be far too bad, but rather than encouraging people to eat until ’stuffed’, really, people should be encouraged to live an active life with more thought given to excersising instead of eating until over full.

All these questions about how long does it take to lose the weight are irritating!!!. Just try the diet and see if it works. Besides, if you really need to lose the weight, then it really doesn’t matter how long it takes. Also, everybody know that if you are heavier, then you will drop quicker, versus someone who is smaller and only needs to lose 10 lbs. Me, I tried this diet and lost 60lbs in 8 months (for those of you who just HAVE to know how long it took!!) It does help you lose weight, but I did gain 5 back, so trying to stay on track. But anyway, try the diet, it works.

I have been on this diet for a couple of weeks and am losing an average of 1 lb every other day. I started at 184 and am now at 174. It’s somewhat difficult to eat only meat and veg, but it does work if you want a kick start or have quite a bit to lose. As with any “diet”, no it is not a sustainable way to eat forever, but it is a way to eat to lose for a number of months. I am also working out vigorously 40 minutes a day so that when I reintroduce carbs back into my diet, I don’t regain all the weight.

I use this diet when needing to loose 10 or so pounds fast. For example first day of work, a wedding, a party etc. Right now I am on it again because I am going on a work related trip to Jamaica with co-workers. In the first week if done properly I ussually loose 5-10lbs and noticably fit pants better. After the first week I only loose 2 or 3lbs. You actually quit craving sugars and carbs after a week or two. The problem is I get bored on the diet because it is so restricted. If you don’t ease back into carbs and sugar after ending the diet you WILL gain all the weight back during the first week. All in all, I think it’s a good fast way to loose a few lbs. I find myself to be a healthy in shape person, but for certain events I like to look my absolute best and this diet helps

I started it on 06-02-08. I was 249. I am now 244. If I weigh myself i the morning right when I get up, I am 239. So it matters for me WHEN I weigh. The best thing is to just look in the mirror and wait til you get the “shape” you want. I actually eat a whole white grapefruit, not a half at every meal. I am trying to get to 200. I am 6′2. Once I get down there, I will consume my METRX shakes instead while working out.

Thought I’d give you guys an updated. I started this diet again 3 weeks ago and have lost 15lbs (even with tiny cheats here and there). It is not “healthy” at all but you do loose weight so it’s your choice. Sometimes I get dizzy, I know I’m lacking important nutrients. But it is not meant to be a long term diet or a permant choice. So i tried the 3 day diet and lost about 4 pounds the first three days but crashed the diet the end of the last day >_<
it gets you more hungry then if you were to starve yourself all together! I would know. It’s probably because you anticipate each meal..
Although I am wondering if THIS diet actually works, i need to lose about 15 lbs, anyone know how long that will take on average..?

hey guys im on day 10 of the grapefruit diet…im so happy with the results and i started going to the gym at least 3-4 days a week to help me too.
theres also a hollywood diet that consists of drinking only the specific juice(you blend fruit yourself to make the juice) and water for two days. it also works but i know its not as good for you because you dont eat solid food. However i wasnt hungry when i did this because i was able to sip the juice whenever i wanted, not just at a certain time.

OK well it does really work, but I doubt that it is because of the grapefruit. Using this diet you consume less than 1000 calories a day. If you are a realtively unactive person you stil burn off about 750 calories. This diet eliminates almost all sugar also. The reason this is a “bad” diet is becuase you loose all starch from your diet. As soon as you start eating starch again you will gain weight. I lost 20 pounds on this diet in 30 days. I did 10 days on 2 days off. Grapefruit is also verry acidic. Be careful not to drink too much, and if you do decide to dring “Simply Grapefruit” works really well. No sugar added

Grapefruit JUICE sends me to the Shi**er within an hour. Eating the fruit does not.
I cannot recommend if you are working out alot. You need carbs for the energy for the workout I think.

Good luck Channelle…I just started the diet on the 18th. I am not a diet fan at all and I am famous for breaking diets quick, because of the restrictions. I did cheat a little by having a potato yesterday. I’ve weighed myself early to see how I was looking since the word is you will lose 5 pounds on the 4th day. I started at 224 lbs and today I am 219 lbs.
It started off a little hard, because I did have headaches. I am not expecting a super fast weightloss. I think you have to eat on time and if you are use to eating a lot or several times a day, is the reason why they say eat until you are full. I was eating light and I was straving, but now that I’ve increased my portions per meal I am ok. I don’t really believe you are necessarily losing water weight either, because before I started this I did not drink a lot of water. My body is really solid with FAT, lol! I believe this diet will be durable for me, because I love meat and veggies. The grapefruit juice wasn’t as bad as I thought.

I started this diet on the 18th at 215lbs and is now down today(8/25/08) to 203lbs. I love being able to eat meat cooked any style. Chicken has been my best friend : ). I am getting closer to my FIRST goal which is 180lbs…looking forward to losing lots more. I will keep you all posted on my success. I started it just yesterday (08.27.08), I followed it strictly and did some exercise (mostly dance). I’ve lost 1.5 kg which is about 3.3 pounds. I am starting this diet tomorrow sept 2nd. I have tried different diets and fasts in the past with success. I always seem to fall off the boat somewhere once its off ! Shame on me. So here I am 5′10 200 , I will get down to 180 slim and trim. The nice thing about this diet is you don’t have to weight out portions, or starve in between meals..eat all you want it says ! Cool ! I love rabbit food so this should be a breeze..lol

Okay! Here it is as of 8/31/08, I lost 11 lbs with a lot of cheats here and there and no execrise. My first goal is to get below 200 lbs. I have 5 more to go. The second goal is to lost a total of 20 lbs. I have 9 more to go. My ultimate goal is to lose 40 lbs. The key is planning and not allowing yourself to be hungry, eat until you are full. Don’t set have unreachable goals, be realistic. It works!!!!!!!

I did this diet years ago and lost over 30 pounds in about 3 months. I have 15 lbs to lose after having my son in Jan. and am on day 7. It really does work, you just can’t expect ridiculous results overnight - give it at least 30 days and you will be amazed!

This diet works…i tried it when i was around 13 in a half..and i stayed on it for nine months including the two day breaks i had every 12 days…and im telling u it works well..yeah u’ll be hungry at the begining and of course you could get use to it later on..i lost 180 ibs in 9 mnths on this diet it works…i kept it for about 4 in a half years and last yeah i gained about 50 back b/c i slaked off i will be starting this again tuesday (09/09/2008)…i think im gona try it for a year…but yeah try it good…for anybody….

Cheeks…… I used to buy the Ocean Spray 100% juice, but now I buy the Publix brand, it is a lot a cheaper. It is not on the shelf, you will find it with the orange juice. I cheat a lot, but not until I did it for 12 days and saw the results. The results encouraged me not to go over board. The key is to eat until you are full. Then you begin to eat less and the other foods become less desirable. To help with my sweet cravings, I drink coffee (with splender w/ low fat chocolate redi-whip)HMMM!, also, I have found Edy’s slow-churn fudge chuck or vanilla sugar-free Ice cream (1 cup). Now this is not an everyday thing, but it helps. I do not recommend cheating until after 30-days.
Stacy……. I eat all kinds of meat and as much as I want (ie. barbeque, fried, smothered, baked, steamed etc.) I know some people don’t recommend this, but it still works. Of course the stricter you are the faster you will lose weight, but 11 1bs, three inches in one month is good enough for me. I feel so much better.

I have been on tis diet off and on for about 7 years now. The catch is once you’ve lost the desired weight you must incorporate lifestyle changes! If not you will gain double the weight back! I am telling all of you this because of past experiences. I will begin this diet again this week. It’s better to start on a Monday because you will have every other weekend off! You must follow the diet exactly the way they tell you to and you will see results! We as Americans are lazy and want the easy way out. Daily activity is required to maintain a healthy or desired weight! Lets all pitch in to help one another and America stay healthy. If you want to do this diet as a jump start to your diet plan, it will work! Enjoy!!!

I have been on the diet 3 weeks today… I have lost 10 lbs. and staying at 10 lbs. for the past week. I really have not taken my 2 days off. I just had a few cheats here and there and counted that for the days off. Do you actually need the 2 days off to jump start the diet or why am I at a stand still. Because it was very exciting to see the quick progress when I first started. Any suggestions……

This diet really does work but you have to add some kind of exercise like at least walking for an hour a day would be perfect. Another thing dont eat too much grapefruit i believed eating more than the recommended would help me loose more weight faster but in only gave me anemia and gastritis so this diet can be good to loose weight but can also affect your health so you decide if u want to look and feel pretty or be healthy.

I just started this diet last night(09/16/2008). So far so good. I am 5′3″ weigh 140lbs and I would like to get down to 120lbs by October 21,2008. Although 125lbs would be fine. Plan on starting to walk 1 hour everyday tomorrow. I will keep you posted!

Hey this diet works. I did this diet about 13 years ago and lost 54 pounds from February 13 to April 29. I walked every day rain or shine for an hour. I have tried this diet several times sinnce then, and can not lose anything without exercising but of coarse I almost 40 now. I started the diet back 09/22, and so far I have lost 2lbs. Before, I don’t remember losing anything until day 5. Somebody help me, I didn’t eat any cheese last time, but can you eat cheese which has no carbohydrates, and still lose weight. Also before, I ate 2 slices of bacon for breakfast, can you eat more bacon and still lose weight. Please respond.

The grapefruit diet does work…u first begin to loose inches, so make sure u start to measure yourself then you loose weight..It worked for me… I was very focused and dedicated to the diet and it worked..I see that my face and my thighs are smaller along with my waist line and after 3months I lost a total of 30pounds. The diet also helps with your eatting habit!!!!

my weight is 140 Lbs, 5′5 and my goal is to lose 10 pds and look fit for my wedding day on 11/30/08 so I have 2 months to fulfill it. My diet plan on each every meal is eating oatmeal, vegetables, a tiny piece of meat, a glass of 8oz grape juice and some grapes for desert. I will drink a lot water as prescribe. I exercise by running and walking for half an hour or playing badminton or basketball 3x a week. I have already started this plan 3 days but no loss of pounds yet… I understand it’s still early to expect. My only concern is the grape juice.. is it really safe drinking a total of 24oz a day? 3x a day on each meal.. Even though it’s 100% grape juice but it still have natural sugar on it ( but it’s still sugar ). I’m afraid to have diabetes for doing this for 2 months. I really do hope it’s safe to our health. I will post updates on my progress. Wish me luck. =)

Hi guys and congrats to the many of you who have done so well. It’s 2nd October 2008 and i have just scanned all the wonderful postings above. The grapefruit diet i initially read about, that Kylie Minogue reportedly uses to lose 7kg (15lb)in 2 weeks, calls for half a grapefruit to be eaten AT THE START of each meal. Previously, instead of going on the LOW-CARB HIGH-PROTEIN DIET, I used this approach to my everyday eating, having half a grapefruit (peeled & cut up into pieces) up to half an hour before each meal for about one and a half years and it worked really well for me as i continued to gradually lose weight despite not worrying about what I ate or drank (including champagne!). I have read that there is an insulin-lowering effect from eating this nutritious high-fibre fruit. Perhaps that’s the key. Actually, I also love eating large red or green fresh chillies when I’m dieting for getting those feel-good endorphins flowing and supposedly also helping the body get into fat-burning mode. As far as the grapefruits go, unfortunately I gradually forgot to pop them in my shopping trolley and focused more on cooking nice meals for my new family and I guess I’m paying the price now, needing to lose 20kg or 3 dress sizes. But for fast weight loss, yes, I have done the LOW-CARB dieting thing, even eating cheese as snacks, and one does lose quite a bit of weight but must be very careful when coming off it as the weight does tend to come back on quickly when you resume eating carbohydrates, even if exercising daily! I would like to give this GRAPEFRUIT DIET another try, having been inspired by all you’ve written above, and by my own experience eating half a grapefruit before each meal… only this time I will stick to it for 30 days or more and only gradually re-introduce low GI/high fibre carbs such as buckwheat crispbread (also great for many of us who are gluten-sensitive) when I come off it. I also believe that walking or cycling (I use the recumbant bike at the gym) at a pace where you are perspiring and have an increased heartrate, yet can still carry on a conversation, for at least 45 minutes most days is the key and I shall commit to doing this. Also, I have just finished reading The Fat Stripping Diet which is very scientific and, in a tiny nutshell, is all about keeping fat below 20g/day for women and below 40g/day for men in order to lose weight, in conjunction with daily exercise. (So I will be eating lean meats, soft* boiled eggs and not smothering my food with butter and oil, that’s for sure, just a little olive oil or flaxseed oil for me. [*A naturopath advised that eating soft boiled eggs does not raise cholesterol, but eating hard boiled eggs does! Also, drip-filtered coffee doesn’t raise cholesterol but espresso coffee, incuding the shots used in cafe lattes and cappucinos, does! The lady who loves green tea should probably drink decaffeinated green tea throughout the day so you’re still getting the anti-oxidants and enjoyment without all the caffeine, which also has an effect on raising blood pressure.) The daily exercise recommended in The Fat Stripping Diet book: brisk walking because that is the best for keeping you in the fat burning zone - it takes about 20 mins to get into the fat burning zone, so make it count and do 45-60 mins! - (and also helps bone density), whereas workouts that are too vigorous keep you in the cardio zone (great for heart and lungs, but calls on stored glycogen for fuel instead of getting the fat burning process going). I wish i knew this sooner cos I’ve been working my butt off (not literally lol) over the past few years doing 5 full-on cardio sessions per week including Les Mills’ Body Attack classes - plus Body Pump. It didn’t help me lose any weight - in fact I’ve only gained it. God bless the grapefruit and good luck to one and all in this continuous battle to keep our tyrant tastebuds under control and regain & keep our healthy, slender figures!

Started the diet on 9/22/08, today(October 3) is day #12 I’ve lost 9lbs. Boy am I ready for for something other than lettuce. It’s not been that bad, haven’t been hungry between meals. I’ve lost a total of 17 lbs since 09/08/08. I saw an article on a carb-cycling diet. Has anyone lost anything on a carb-cycling diet, where you eat low carb one day and high carb low fat the next?

Day 8: Finally I’ve lost 2lbs… really not easy to lose weight but I have 53 more days to go. Tomorrow is my Dad’s birthday so I’m going to make a little cheating lol… but seriously I’m not going to be full. Oats and grape fruit juice is still on my menu for tomorrow and I’m not going to sacrifice my 8 days of dieting.
My diet plan:
Meals: Oats, green vegetables, a tiny piece of lean meat, a glass of 8oz grape fruit juice and some grapes for desert. I will drink a lot water as prescribe.
Workout: I exercise by running and walking for half an hour or playing badminton or basketball every monday, wednesday and friday.

Well, I’ve read all the blogs and I’m really excited about starting the diet tomorrow. I’m looking forward to shedding the winter “fat” that I’ve accumulated over the last few years. I have about 20 pounds to lose and I’m curious to hear how Nina is doing because she’s similar to me in weight and goals. It took time to put on all the extra pounds (although I swear it happened overnight) and this is a good diet to “jump start” my weight loss and see results in a short period of time. Like some of you said, if you don’t change your eating habits and lifestyle you’ll end up gaining back all the weight you fought hard to lose. I’m tired of watching the scale go up and down (mostly up). The success of the diet depends on you. There are many that have lost 40 - 50 pounds and have been on the the diet for several months. [I wish there was more information] I trying the diet today and i was thinking it doesn’t say if your allowed yo eat it with ketchup? Personally I hate eggs. So i was unsure if it would still work to eat them with ketchup because it drowns the taste out…
Also by any kinds of meat.. Does that count for fattening foods? O.o; I usually don’t like to sit down and cook a meal. It takes to long. [I just cooked a hotdog, not the healthy but it was quickly cooked]. I read any kind but i wonder….

Today is day 5. I lost 5# in 4 days (well actually in 3 days because I stayed the same on the 4th day) and today is the first day that I really don’t feel hungry between meals. I started drinking Good Earth sweet and spicy herb tea in addition to the water (I was getting sick of drinking all that plain water!! all day). The first couple of days were hard getting used to not eating little meals throughout the day and having to pass up “goodies” in the office. I’m sticking to the diet as it is, not cheating and eating slow so my brain has time to realize I’m full quicker. I’m finding that my portion sizes get smaller as I go because I feel full sooner. I take my vitamins and supplements and feel great! I am getting as much exercise in as I can, even if it means going for a walk on my breaks and during lunch. I’m going to start exercising to videos after work to get the extra “workout” and hopefully build muscles quicker. Muscles burn fat faster. I fit into a pair of pants that were snug on me previously and it was nice not to feel like a sausage in them! The diet is what you make it to be. I hope to lose another 15# between now and Christmas, which is not an unrealistic goal. Seeing results quickly is rewarding!!

Ihave tired the three day diet and it does work and when I was off if I ate fish and veggies. that actually kept the wait off. As for the muslim dude you do know that you can eat turkey bacon instead of pork because I dont eat meat at all.

I have just started the diet a few days ago and I am down 6 pounds. I find it hard to believe I think the scale is lying. I only needed to loose about 10 pounds as I was 148 and wanted to get down below 140. It says that you can eat red onions but not white does anyone know why?

I started this diet today 10/25/08. I am 214 and 5′2.5. I need to loose 24 more lbs so my BMI will be low enough to donate a kidney to my brother. I tried the cabbage soup diet and only lost 2 lbs and never cheated. I am a little discouraged but hope that I will have more success with the grapefruit diet. The faster I lose, the faster we can proceed with the surgery and the faster my brother can end his 4 hr, 3day a wk sessions of dialysis. My total goal is 50 lbs. The rest after I recover. Best wishes to everyone on their weight loss journeys. Any advice is welcome. Can we eat fruit?
