Six Weeks to OMG Diet

six-week-to-omg-dietSix Weeks to OMG is a trendy diet plan from British actor/ celebrity trainer Venice Fulton.

Fulton claims to have a background in exercise physiology and nutrition as well as 10 years of experience helping celebrities get and stay fit.

However, his credentials are hard to verify.

In any event, Six Weeks to OMG claims that by using the book’s techniques, dieters can be skinnier than all their friends!

OMG Diet Basics

The OMG diet focuses on five principles:

  1. Lose fat
  2. Get toned
  3. Slim down your thighs
  4. Flatten your belly
  5. Keep your skin, hair and nails growing

The book also centers around Fulton’s “dieting rules” in which he believes are the key to being successful at weight loss.

Carbs are Carbs

Six Weeks to OMG asserts that carbs are carbs and your body can’t tell the difference between chocolate cake and an apple.

Warning, bad advice: Fulton states that “broccoli carbs can be worse than soda carbs.

Too Much Exercise is Bad

The author says that working your muscles to much can have negative results since muscle fibers tear during use.

Take Cold Showers and Baths

The OMG Diet stresses the calorie burning benefit of cold water since your body has to use energy to keep your core body temperature at 98.6° F.

Skip Breakfast and Exercise on an Empty Stomach

Fulton says that breakfast should be skipped until after you can exercise. Exercising on an empty stomach causes the body to use its energy stores (fat).

Drink Black Coffee

Six Weeks to OMG recommends black coffee because of its antioxidants, zero calories and metabolism stimulating properties. It also suppresses the appetite.

Stay Away From Fruit

Venice Fulton says to limit fruit because the body processes fructose (the main sugar in fruit) differently and this interferes with appetite hormones.

Recommended Foods

Coffee, green leafy vegetables, limited fruit, chicken, protein powder, nuts, lean beef, fish, beans, lentils, brown rice, other fresh vegetables.

Six Weeks to OMG Exercise

Venice Fulton says that dieters should choose an exercise that activates the most muscles and do that exercise at least 30 minutes to an hour each day. But, stresses not to over do it as mentioned above.

He believes that weight training/ muscle resistance exercises should be used to prevent the loss of muscle.

Pros

  • Six Weeks to OMG appeals to young women and teens.
  • Promotes eating whole foods.
  • Promotes exercise.
  • Avoids refined sugar and processed food.
  • People have had success with Venice Fulton’s plan.

Cons

  • Some fruits are forbidden.
  • Some rules contradict what research has shown.
  • Skipping meals can be dangerous for those with diabetes.
  • Likely won’t appeal to some men.
  • Could encourage an unhealthy need to be “skinnier than all your friends“.
  • Black coffee won’t appeal to all dieters.

Good Tips but Some Misinformation as Well

Six Weeks to OMG is a diet plan that appeals to younger female dieters and addresses the cultural expectations placed on them in regards to appearance.

Venice Fulton offers some good tips such as eliminating junk food and processed ingredients from the diet, but also supports some theories that wouldn’t be backed by what scientific research says about exercise and nutrition.

Some girls may distort the message of the book as a competition to be the “skinniest girl”. This could be damaging emotionally and lead to eating disorders.

The Six Weeks to OMG diet could be a good weight loss program as long as certain aspects of the plan are kept in perspective.

K, Everyone this is a fad diet it is not good for you, don’t cut fruits out or avoid them. If you want to lose weight exercise everyday (30-60mins), and eat junk food only every once and a while but don’t cut it out completely. You should only lose about a 1-3 pounds a week, and you should be eating every food group!! Take this advice and you should lose weight. Also going for a walk or just vacuming or cleaning the house instead of watching tv will help you lose weight because it gets you up and moving, and you will have more energy.

This is the most idiotic diet I’ve ever heard. First of all, fruits are healthy because they are natural and unprocessed, unlike the soda that Fulton claims to be healthier. Second of all, coffee is unhealthy, period. And finally, breakfast is the most important meal of the day and one you should not skip.

I agree with Gail. I’ve only done this for three weeks but have lost weight and love the idea of eating what you want but only for your 8 hour window.

I want to know what do you eat at your last meal of the day. I was trying to eat protein and non carb vegies. Also when can you workout if morning is not good (time wise) I work early mornings but off early in afternoon.

Like Gail and unlike most of the commenters, I have actually been on the OMG plan for five months, so far, covering every holiday on the year-end calendar. Because OMG is a set of principles versus a straight-jacket, I have found it easy to adapt to eating out and a hectic schedule. Applying the OMG principles very much in moderation, I have lost 12 lbs over those five months. Gail is obviously a better role model, however I am actually quite happy with the progress. I plan to continue with OMG for another 15 lbs.

Some might judge my own rate of loss as slow, however consider that it took me two YEARS on a Mediterranean-inspired eating plan to lose a first 14 lbs. Like I said, I’m no fanatic dieter. In fact, I consider OMG’s pace to be exciting. My collarbones have reappeared after a fifteen year absence. My liver metabolism numbers have finally fallen out of the red zone and my cholesterol numbers are within striking range of not giving my doctor a heart attack. Coming from a family afflicted by genetically high “bad” cholesterol, I have watched statins destroy my mother’s memory and peace of mind. I am determined not to take meds for something that I can control with diet and a little bit of moving around.

For those who are still reading: OMG is not a classic “diet” — the author doesn’t list foods to eat or *not* eat and includes no recipes on purpose. You don’t track calories or other numbers (unless you want to lose it super fast).

Rather, OMG resembles the Mediterranean way of eating that was familiar to me but with some special kickers. So, when I have a choice (not at Mom’s), I try to fill half my plate with whole protein such as fish, fowl, meat or egg white omelet and half with colorful veggies of any kind. I strive for moderation in all else such as sauces, fruit (fructose), sweets, oils, fats, and nutritionless carbs (pick your favorite; mine is potato chips).

Yes, I eat potato chips. But now I buy the smallest snack bag and count them as a whole day’s treat. As the book suggests, I don’t obsess about dietary fat consumed in this way and yet my health continues to improve. (And I’m NEVER dizzy and nauseous like when I tried the carb-restrictive Atkins diet — my lesson from that fiasco was that if a diet makes me sick, weak or requires laxatives, it’s NOT a sustainable lifestyle.)

One facet of OMG that HAS turned me into a fanatic because of how much better I feel: I now do my best to avoid appetite-deceiving fructose and sugar substitutes like Splenda and aspartame. It’s hard to do because sucraloses, stevia or aspartame are in almost EVERYTHING prepared by a manufacturer, often for no apparent reason (Splenda in salad dressing? Why??). Of course, that just makes it easier for me to eat mostly foods that walked, swam, or grew. If I eat sweet fruit, I eat it at the end of a meal as a treat. This is working surprisingly well; it’s amazing how sweet fruit tastes when you eat less of it less often.

As for the suggested morning routine, until you’ve tried it, don’t knock it. Thirty seconds of cold rinse at the end of my shower and drinking a mug of black tea instead of breakfast (couldn’t stand the coffee) have given me additional time and energy in the morning. My husband calls my daily session of gasping under a cold spray “lazy shower aerobics”. The happy result has been an appetite that doesn’t plague me like it used to –and yes, collarbones. I think that my diaphragm is stronger too :-) Plus there’s that happier liver. What’s to knock?

In fact, I call OMG my “liver-friendly” diet when friends ask about how I’m losing weight (I have had to buy smaller jeans, so they notice). BTW, I will never be skinnier than any of my running/biking/yoga-ing friends but I don’t care. I’ll be skinnier than the younger me and that’s a worthwhile accomplishment. Especially for a food-loving, sweating-adverse woman dealing with genes handed out by an otherwise wonderful family. OMG’s author may come across as a goofball (I suspect deliberately) and his plan may have a few goofball ideas, but I’ll take his best ideas every day over the best daily meds.

And congratulations, Gail! Do you blow up the balloons too??

The thing people need to realize is how the body uses what you eat. If you eat several small meals rather than 3 large meals, your glucose levels will remain…level. The more glucose (sugar) you ingest and don’t burn off, the more it converts to fat for energy storage. Glucose (sugar) is the first thing your body uses as its energy source when you exercise. If you take in more than you need or burn off, the excess is stored as fat. Period. A lean protein, high fiber, low glucose (sugar) diet forces your body to use its own fat stores for energy, first. Keep in mind that a lot of fiber foods also contain glucose and fat. Fiber has to be used in moderation. Balancing a diet is important. I try to stick to a high protein, moderate fiber, low fat and low sugar diet. Once you cut back on sugar and high carbohydrate foods, you not only will no longer crave them, your appetite will be reduced to what you actually NEED and not what you want or crave eating. It’s not that hard if you don’t make drastic, unrealistic dietary changes.

Fantastic book, love Venice’s style and knowledge and where he’s coming from.I had abuse at work from being excited about the book from a bunch of people half my age who havent read the book but insisted googling the ‘negative press’ about the book infront of me!.This was spurred on by a girl with bad skin, balding hair, typical ‘junk-food shape’ and a reputation of not great health. Her bunch of ‘followers’ joined in with the put-downs,so I told them to stick their spiel up their bum-holes unless they’d read the book themselves and walked off to start my day.P.S .I ‘am’ skinnier than all ‘those friends’ so I merely put it down to jealousy!

      Hi Yvett,
Eat lots of good fat like avocado, salmon and nuts etc.
And lots of fruit and veggies.
      NO DONUTS! ;)
No dieting when breastfeeding as the toxins stored in your fat tissue could transfer to the baby.

Lindal that info regarding Brest feeding is rubbish. The reason not to diet during feeding is so you have enough caloric intake to make milk.

      • ted Jan 14th 2013

But, If you are overweight, a woman’s body will still make milk bu using it’s stored fat reserves.

OMG, wow I thought this would be a joke. Sounds to me like this guy is setting up young women to have an eating disorder. These are
The rules I would practice in anarexia and bulimia. I can’t imagine that a mother would feel comfortable with something so…. Negative. Look, I’m for a healthy life style, making changes, eating well and exercise. But being “skinnier than your friends” is promoting judgement and loss of self exceptence. Psh!

      Hi Jane,

As I have said I am researching natural health, and this book is dangerous, and gives some terrible advice.

Caffeine found in coffee acts as a DEPRESSANT on the human brain, plants create caffeine to kill insects and poison the soil so other plants cant grow.

Our diet should be pro symbiotic, and if you want good source of anti oxidants have a few pieces of 85% coco content chocolate, it also slows down fat storage.

can not understand why i cant reply to your post !!!!……any way I do agree caffeine is classed as a stimulant, however I am researching the psychological effects of when caffeine is suddenly removed from a person diets. It seems to create a state of dependency, and anxiety etc etc.

      • ted Aug 29th 2012

I would hope that in your studies you learn that caffeine is actually classified as a stimulant.

Argh, it makes me really annoyed reading some of these comments! There is no where that he STATES that carbs from broccoli are worse than carbs from coke – in context the comment is FOR SOME PEOPLE (the lucky ones) it makes no difference where they get their carbs, whether its coke or broccoli. He also warns that diet sodas are just as bad if not worse than carb laden ones. If articles are going to be written, at least read and report accurately because it undermines YOUR credibility. Good luck to anyone trying these techniques and if you are unsure look into the research links he has provided for Pubmed, this is a forum for scientific researchers to publish results from the studies they have done. Good luck in you search for a healthier, fitter and happier you.

Regarding Coke and broccoli, the book does say broccoli can be worse, though whether VAF really thinks this is doubtful.

Unfortunately, the UK paperback edition ISBN 978-0-718-17725-6, published by Penguin, says, on the back cover, “listen to the truth…[list of points from the book, including:] – broccoli carbs can be worse than those from Coke”. Now, I expect VAF did not actually write the back cover, and might not have been asked to review it either. However, the book does actually say this on the back cover – there’s no getting away from that. Maybe VAF can go and sue his publisher. Or maybe next time he should insist on approving everything his copywriters produce before it’s published.

Condoning diet coke rubbish and that a veg is not better than soda silly. Designed for stupid vein celebs who want a quick fix. And the people on some of the websites who eat chips and pies and crisps etc are gonna lose weight if they stop putting that rubbish in there mouths anyway regardless of drinking coffee for breakfast. Just eat healthy and get of the sofa and you will get fitter and leaner maybe i will publish a book about common sense!!! People dont buy this book and pay into this nonsense..

If you eat protein before working out, you will burn more fat. Eating an egg or lean meat with very low carbs will force you to burn fat for energy. Your body burns glucose (sugar) first – that is what causes the burning sensation in your muscles. Glucose (sugar) if not burned turns into fat for energy storage. Eating a small amount of a protein with low or no carbs 30 or more minutes before working out will help you burn your own body fat faster during your workout than eating nothing and having no energy for your workout.

    • elenakinani Aug 15th 2012

Atkins diet works fantastic as long as you keep measuring carbs. All the other diets are similar. With Atkins i manage to loose 45 kg and i was feeling fine. Just you have to maintain the write level of food. Protein vs carbs.

      Hi,
Well I’m on the 2nd week of Mr. Fulton’s life style change.
For the record I am a 50 year old woman. I have been on heavy doses of thyroid medication for years and have struggled with my weight for life.

I have yet to lose one pound however, Mr. F. has my vote!!! I think he is brilliant. I have been on every diet and although I have gained and lost over the years, I have never I felt so darn fantastic!!! The cold showers/baths truly do help to elevate mood and sense of well being. At first I hated getting in the shower, now I can hardly wait for that good morning rush. Its worth missing breakfast.
And complaining about two cups of coffee a day, come on. The caffeine is not going to kill you but the diabetes and heart disease sure will!
The discussions on broccoli in previous posts border on ridiculous. Just because you read one questionable sentence in a book of thousands of good sentences should not make you want to discredit an entire regime.
Lastly, the included peer reviewed articles was the clincher for me. Who writes a diet book these days and then gives you the highest form of proof by putting in world wide peer reviewed back-up? No one, because they don’t have the guts, or probably can’t find the real evidence.

Thank you Mr. Fulton. I will make your book my lifestyle change because it makes me feel like a million! I can tackle the world.
      Waiting for your next installment.

Good to hear you are feeling great on this diet! I am 53 and one week in and I agree that it is energising. I have not lost weight yet either but I am beginning to look a bit more toned because it has given me the motivation to try something and stick to it. The three square meals in a day is my biggest stumbling block because once I have skipped breakfast I then only have my work lunch break and evening meal times left to eat! So I reckon I don’t need to stint on the portions then. Good luck!

This is what is working for me. Diet is essentially Math. To be more precise, Accounting…
You can either take in less energy than you need in a day by eating less or spend more energy than you eat in a day by development lean mass (more muscles). This will create a negative balance that will eat up your reserves (fat). A negative balance of 7000kcal means 1kg less of body fat… that’s all you need to know to define how fast you want to get there.
Ideally you should work on both:
      - Eat a little bit less than you need, so you don’t feel hungry, and prioritize quality food (a nutritionist will help)
      - Do three to four 30min exercise sessions a week always alternating with a day o rest (you don’t build muscles when exercising, you build it when you are resting from an exercising session)
      - Allow yourself a screw up day every week as a reward to your efforts (after a while, even during a screw up day, you’re not going to be that obsessed for calories anymore)
The real issue is discipline, which is tied to your motives in life… making sure your efforts are linked to what you want in life is the key to success.
Stick with a diet and exercise plan and you’ll get there!
      Denis

drop the carbs and eat as much raw veg as you like, a small amount of meat or fish if you want, and drink 3l of water per day – it wont put you in peak condition but it will shift the main excess until you can find the time for yourself

I am researching natural health ,however I would avoid this book as there is some very bad advice on offer.

Firstly do not take ice baths or consume black coffee to burn fat …..the biological processes of the body always ensures that fat stores are maintained so increasing fat burn will also increase the fat deposit rate in the long term you will probably gain wait.

should stay well clear of this diet.

Another celebrity fad diet. Venice A. Fulton really doesn’t know his facts. I believe before anyone comes out with a so-called healthy eating or weight loss plan, they had better do their research. The comments that Mr. Fulton makes, esecially one being that Broccoli carbs can be worse than soda carbs, shows people that he really doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Broccoli is a better source of not only carbs, but healthy fiber. Soda’s carbs are from refined white sugar and high fructus corn syrup. How are carbs from a can of soda better than Broccoli? No offense, Mr. Fulton, but you need to get your nutrition facts straight.
