Pancreatic Oath: Healthy Pancreas Diet

The pancreas Diet is found in the book. The Pancreatic Oath by Candice Rosen, a registered nurse, social worker and health counselor.

She says that this is not a diet book, or a book for diabetics but instead is a healthy eating lifestyle guide for everyone.

In this book Rosen explains how eating the right foods can protect your pancreas and promote health, whereas when you eat unhealthy foods you are abusing your pancreas.

By following the guidelines outlined in this program you will be able to discover the foods that help your pancreas function optimally so that you can easily lose weight.

Pancreas Diet Basics

In The Pancreatic Oath readers learn about the connection between a healthy pancreas and long-term wellbeing. Rosen believes that “pancreatic abuse” is a major risk factor for the development of a number of chronic diseases – not just diabetes – including conditions such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, kidney problems, and polycystic ovarian syndrome.

The goal of the program is to reduce the workload on your pancreas by learning which foods keep your blood sugar in balance. This is achieved by monitoring your blood glucose levels four to six times each day after eating and recording the results in comparison with your food selections.

The diet does not require any calorie or carbohydrate counting but it is necessary to eliminate all foods containing sugar as well as high glycemic carbohydrates like bread, potatoes, rice and pasta. Artificial sweeteners must be strictly avoided and alcohol intake should be limited or eliminated entirely.

Fruit is permitted in moderate amounts, however, it must always be eaten alone (with two exceptions: apples with almond butter and Candice’s Super Smoothie). You should emphasize green vegetables and plant-based proteins such as tofu, tempeh and legumes, while limiting animal protein and avoiding dairy products.

An eating pattern involving five hours between meals is recommended but in the beginning you may need snacks as your body and pancreas adjusts to a new way of eating.

Dieters are advised to use a rather long list of nutritional supplements including multivitamins and minerals, coenzyme Q10 and fish oil. Rosen clearly explains the purpose of each of the recommended products and outlines how they work to improve your health.

Recommended Foods

Salmon, shrimp, organic chicken, eggs, tofu, tempeh, beans, lentils, Vega protein powder, almond butter, tahini, walnuts, apples, pears, raspberries, lettuce, broccoli, cucumber, asparagus, cabbage, sweet potato, hummus, avocado, Grape Nuts, tortilla chips, pasta, quinoa, olive oil, cinnamon, herbal tea.

Scrambled eggs with green peppers, onions, mushrooms
1 cup decaf coffee

Morning Snack

1 apple


Bean burger with side salad
2-3 avocado slices

Afternoon Snack

Celery with almond butter

Avoid Strenuous Exercise

Regular and moderate exercise is encouraged including walking, swimming, cycling, yoga, Pilates, and housework are recommended by this healthy pancreas diet. Dieters are warned not to do any strenuous exercise because this can cause a drop in your blood glucose that increases appetite.

Rosen says that many of her clients are unable to exercise, but they are still able to lose two or three pounds a week on this plan.

    My husband had a pancreatic attach in October caused by a gallstone lodged in the duct. They removed the gall bladder but necrosis in part of the pancreas resulted. In February he had another attack resulting in surgery to create an opening from the pseudo cysts to the stomach so they could drain. He has gone from 170 to 128 in this time and is 6′ tall. He needs to GAIN weight, not lose it as is referenced in the comments. Will this book help him?

    My husband when to the hospital last night with a severe abdominal pain, results ” swollen pancreas”. I need to know what he can eat or drink, I am confuse, some pages said he is allow to have eggs and pasta, another pages said he can’t have that, and etc…. Please guide me for a good diet for my husband. thank you so much.

      Hi Monica,

      I am currently dealing with the same situation. The information given to me at the hospital was sparing and minimalist at best. They told me to start on a clear fluid diet (understandable) to take the load off of the pancreas, but told me to have all these high sugar foods (ie Gatorade, Jello, chicken broth -animal fats are not the best).

      Through my current research, I have decided I’m not going to ‘baby’ my pancreas, just feed it properly. Bare in mind that I’m a young 31 and in good health, so this may not apply to everyone!

      I make sure to eat dark leafy greens every day, especially spinach which has anti-inflammatory effects. Lots of vegetables, especially dark colored fruits/vegs as they have lots of antioxidants, which reign in the free-radicals (which can contribute to pancreatic cancer).

      I’m reducing all my simple sugars, ie most breads/sugary cereals (i allow myself Cheerios, etc), regular potatoes, and NOTHING FRIED! That’s tough! Keep the sweet potatoes though!

      Lots and lots of water, and no…NOOOO…alcohol or energy drinks! The alcohol is the number one cause for pancreatitis, but the energy drinks mess with not only your body’s ability to produce insulin, but also adrenaline. Harsh! They say no caffeine, but really!? 1 cup of coffee per day should be fine.

      Try supplementing with NATURALLY SOURCED supplements/pills (from real foods, not chemicals) with fish oil (Omega-3 fatty acids & improve brain function), acidophilus (maintain good digestive health), and other over the counter pills, etc.

      Google will find you a great list of foods good for pancreas health. I think it’s a little trial and error myself. Oh, NO DAIRY! I had forgotten this as I already am dairy free, but that’s a must!

      Good luck to your husband and yourself. It’s not easy to change eating habits, but its certainly worth it!
