No Flour, No Sugar Diet

The No Flour, No Sugar Diet is a weight-loss program developed by medical practitioner and health columnist Dr Peter Gott. His best-selling book of the same name shows how to reduce calories in your diet by eliminating flour-based and added-sugar foods.

Basics of the Diet

no-flour-no-sugar-dietFoods containing added sugar and refined flour are nutrient-poor, unlike foods containing whole grains, fruits, vegetables and legumes which are rich in vitamins, minerals and fiber. The No Flour, No Sugar Diet reduces the so-called ‘empty’ calories of refined carbohydrate-based foods, also frequently high in fat (such as pizza and donuts).

The No Flour, No Sugar lifestyle encourages selection of foods without significant sugar and refined flour content, based on interpretation of food labels. Exercise is also mentioned (half an hour a day). No counting of calories is suggested, however the book does list foods to major on and foods to avoid.

Sample Meal Plans

The No Flour, No Sugar Diet book includes meal plans for 14 days, and no less than 75 pages of recipes (in a 186-page book!). Here are a few examples from the Meal Plans section:

  • Breakfast: Omelet muffin, sliced fresh strawberries
  • Morning Snack: Diced cantaloupe
  • Lunch: Greek salad
  • Afternoon: No-sugar-added yogurt
  • Dinner: Chicken breasts in Rosemary-Dijon sauce, spinach salad with tomato vinaigrette, steamed brown rice
  • Breakfast: Whole-grain cereal (with no flour or added sugar), nonfat milk, fresh peach
  • Morning Snack: Diced pineapple
  • Lunch: Green salad with water-packed tuna, sliced tomato, shredded carrot, and no-sugar-added vinaigrette
  • Afternoon: Spiced Edamame (Soy beans in the pod)
  • Dinner: Meatballs in tomoto sauce and baked polenta with fresh corn
  • Breakfast: Basic Crepe filled with sliced lean ham and reduced-fat cheese; sliced apple
  • Morning Snack: 1 stalk celery fille with reduced-fat, no-sugar-added peanut butter
  • Lunch: Taco salad with spiced prawns
  • Afternoon: Spiced Edamame
  • Dinner: Curry yogurt chicken, steamed or sauteed zucchini, steamed brown rice

Conclusion

Most people who eliminate from their diet foods containing refined flour and sugar will lose weight. A No Flour, No Sugar Diet works, especially if part of a healthy lifestyle.

I am over weight and just got told by my doctor that I need to be watching my sugar since it is up since the last check which was 6 mos ago. My sugar is 112. I have such a hard time dieting. I know I could do this for anyone but it seems for myself I can not. I am unemployed and really can not justify spending money on the book but is there any of this online that I can look at. I will take any suggestions any one can offer to get me started. I weigh 230 lbs and know that 80 pounds less would be great.

    Thanks

Lost 5lbs in the first week. Im not having a hard time sticking to the diet but did notice 6 days in that I was craving, missing the sweets. Then I realized I could eat no sugar jello only 10 calories too. Now Im motivated to try it for a least a month. Have also noticed I have a little more energy.

Looks like it’s a watered down version of the SCD Specific Carbohydrate Diet) and The Maker’s diet. Just marketed for losing weight instead of for disease.

The General population ie ‘YOU’ does have some innate differences over people with Celiac or crohns disease though. You can handle and digest carbohydrates more readily so You don’t have to make up those calories with fat which is for people with Crohns better tolerated.

I have no doubt this works for losing weight. No sugar/flour means no Ice cream/pasta/fast food/cake/brownies/bread. And the foods it does include are easier to digest with less total calories(fruit, vegatables and yogurt) or last in your system longer which helps kill hunger(corn, rice, fat).

Also he seems to include plenty of meat which is a good source of b12 and iron among other things and critical for maintaining health although legumes can be a good alternative source of vegetarians.

Men want about 20% of their calories to be from protein. Women a little less. Interestingly in a 80% lean cut of meat the 20% that is fat has 80% of the calories. But don’t get scared of fat calories they’re far better for you than calories from sugar or flour.

There are definite problems I can see with the fruits mentioned. Fresh strawberries, cantaloupe, and peaches aren’t available at least at my groceries as often as not. They may sell them year round but they aren’t any good all year round.

Oranges and peeled/cooked apples are a good substitute that’s more often available.

    Does this really work?
Yes! I can’t think of anyone for whom it wouldn’t.

I started this diet about a week ago. I’m a bit skeptical about the results because it was only a few days after my period ended and around the time I started, so the weighloss could be due in part water retention loss. However, I weighed around 135 then and this week I’m 133 slowly hitting 132. If I’m 132 by next week. I think this diet might actually be working, but you have to be strict. No flour means no flour and no sugar, means no sugar. Otherwise, I don’t think you’ll see much results. On the other hand, everyone’s bodies are different.

I have started this diet 4 days ago and I already see a 2-3 lb weight loss. I am not finding it hard to do at all and love bread and CHOCOLATE. But not missing them as much as I thought I would.

I have been on this diet just short of 2 weeks. I don’t see a weight loss. My clothes are slightly looser. How long does it take to work? I am also doing WW points for portion control. Any thoughts?

I’ve been on this diet for a month now- not to lose weight but because I was diagnosed with a sugar intolerance which was affecting my ability to get pregnant. I have lost weight on it and after the first week I found I had so much more energy without all the processed rubbish. I now live on meat, veg and porridge. I also found it has helped my acne beyond belief!

I tried a no flour no sugar diet recently. I lost about 5-6 lbs. in the first 4 days. I got some withdrawal sypmtoms, but then after 10 days I felt FANTASTIC. I don’t know why I stopped it, but I really want to try to do it again. It’s hard to start day 1, but I need to. I have a fmaily to cook for, so it’s a bit of a challenge. Not that bad though, as you can still have brown rice and corn, and w/ me, low fat dairy was stilll allowed.

I’ve been on this for almost weeks only with a few modifications. I eat whole wheat or whole grain flour products (pasta, bread, tortillas), not too much, but enough. I usually had my coffee with 2tsp of sugar and half/half so I switched to green tea for my caffeine. I’ve lost 5 pounds already! You hear this all the time, BUT it is KEY: Drink lots and lots of water whenever you think about it during the day. Green tea can dehydrate very quickly(as can coffee).

I did a diet like this in 2006, never have I felt better in my life, I lost 130lbs. It is a commitment for sure but worth it! I started adding sugar and flour back in 07 and have struggled with it ever since. I have put weight back on, but I am realizing that eating sugar and flour free is really the only way to live. So I am going to start over, simply because of how amazing I felt!!

My daughter has headaches for six years, everyday. We found a doctor that retested her for food allergies. Most of the tests came out positive and one thing she is allergic to is suger. Does anyone know where I can find ham without sugar in it? Most of them are curred in sugar and i looked at the butcher shops around my area and couldn’t find any without. She is picky and she can’t eat beef either. She eats chicken just about everyday and sooner or later she is gonna get tired of that. She does like turkey and she eats that to. It’s just the ham I can’t find.Thank you for your time, Holly

this way of eating (no sugar, no refined carbs)is also the BEST to lowering cholestrol numbers. I reduced my LDL of 168 to 126 (42 points) in about 5 weeks. My doctor was really impressed. I will continue with this way of eating as I have also lost 16 pounds (although the weight loss was not my priority). Give it a try, you will be happy with the results.

I’ve done this in the past. It helped me to lose the stubborn last pounds as well as clear up my acne. Just my skin, mind you, I’m not saying that’s a benefit for everyone, but it could work!

I cut all sugar and all artificial sugar and limited the flour but didn’t cut it completely and went from 136 to 126 in 30 days. The first 4 days were hard and day 4 was the worse but after that I had more energy and since then I have dropped to 120 in the following 6 weeks. Now, I have allowed myself some sugar but I am careful and I watch everything I eat. I also make sure I do not eat high fructose corn syrup. This was all done with little excercise. Now I have added weight training, but very little cardio. I am also not tired all the time like I used to be. I went from a size 8-10 to a 4. It works.
