Martha’s Vineyard Detox Diet
Background
The Martha’s Vineyard Detox Diet is the creation of Roni DeLuz who is the founder and director of the Martha’s Vineyard Holistic Retreat.
DeLuz states that the program was originally designed with the purpose of cleansing and nourishing the body. Claims made for the health benefits of the diet are that it will cleanse the digestive system, boost immunity, reduce cellulite and enhance mental clarity. It also helps to change the way people think about food and to foster a new healthy lifestyle which can help with maintaining weight loss if these good habits are kept up.
The substantial weight loss that occurs on the program DeLuz says is a bonus. However this is certainly the major attraction of the program to many dieters with promised results of 21 pounds in 21 days holding great appeal for those who are looking for fast results.
21 Pounds in 21 Days Basics
The diet is centered on liquids such as fresh vegetable juices, live green drinks, berry drinks, herb tea and puréed vegetable soups.
Permitted vegetables for soups include garlic, beans, carrots, cucumbers, celery, collard greens, kale, beets, sweet potatoes, summer squashes, most green vegetables, tomatoes, and purple cabbage.
In addition there are several required nutritional supplements such as vitamins, digestive enzymes and aloe vera juice.
These are the only foods to be consumed for the entire 21 day program. The plan provides a daily intake of approximately 1000 calories. Caffeine and alcohol must be strictly avoided.
After 21 days dieters are encouraged to go off the detox diet carefully beginning with adding protein powder, soy milk, yogurt and salmon followed by gradually adding other nutritious foods.

Exercise Recommendations
Dieters are advised to walk one mile a day in a quiet relaxed setting or to bounce on a mini trampoline for 20 minutes to help to stimulate the lymphatic system.
Additional Recommendations
Colonics, coffee enemas, saunas and lymphatic massage are recommended to help with eliminating toxins.
Costs and Expenses
21 Pounds in 21 Days: Martha’s Vineyard Detox Diet retails for $24.95. However it is a requirement of the program to purchase nutritional supplements from the website which costs $199 plus $14.95 shipping and handling for the 21 day program.
A juicer is also essential for the program and these can range in cost from $35-$500.
Pros
- May be beneficial for people at beginning of a lifestyle change as the dramatic change in routine can help to break unhealthy habits and to increase awareness about food quality in the diet.
- Rapid weight loss can be good psychological incentive for many dieters to continue with a weight loss program.
- High fruit and vegetable intake with an average of 22 serves daily.
Cons
- Only 20 grams of protein per day which is well below recommended daily intakes. Also lacking in essential fats and fiber.
- Withdrawal from coffee, sugar and alcohol can cause symptoms such as headaches which may make it may be difficult to continue with working and other normal daily routines.
- Socially disruptive as it is impossible to eat out for the entire 21 days unless bringing your own beverages.
- Requirement to purchase nutritional supplements as well as a juicer makes this a very expensive program compared to many other diets.
Conclusions
Although dieters are almost guaranteed to lose large amounts of weight on this program it is likely that the majority of this will be muscle rather than fat loss. This in effect sets dieters up to regain weight when a normal diet is resumed due to a reduction in the metabolism.
Current nutritional models in regard to detoxification diets are that such extreme approaches are unnecessary and may do more harm than good in many cases. If you want to cleanse the body and lose weight the best approach is considered to be a highly nutritious balanced diet.

is this really good for weight loss?.
You don’t have to spend $199 on vitamins to get the book. I found it at Barnes & Noble bookstore. This article says the book is $24.95 but I didn’t pay that. What I found was a paperback version for $16.99. I read the first chapter before buying any book, and what it said made sense to me. I’m going to do it. I already do it a little bit when I have ice water with every meal anyway, and load up on liquids at meals when I can; egg and toast breakfast with a big glass of water, hot tea, and fruit juice, for a good example. I read some on the comments on here and I have this to say. If you take a 16 ounce glass, fill it to the brim with ice, then pour in one of those 16 oz Lipton tea bottles, you only use half the bottle, which is one cup of tea, and one cup of water, just like the book says. So many of you were probably having some of these foods all along. I bought a tall cup and reusable straw combo by Alladin company at Old Navy. I’ve seen them in grocery stores too, by the lunch bags. Its perfect for this. I’m 40, my triglyceride cholesterol is high, I have borderline high blood pressure, and get frequent headaches. I can’t wait to get detoxed and healthy. I had a surgery years ago on my jaw that forced me on a pure liquid diet for weeks. I lost 8 lbs, was the skinniest I’ve ever been as an adult, and guys were hitting on me just getting the mail. I can’t wait to check all that off the list: weight loss, normal pressure, no headaches, fit in old clothes, look great, feel great, can’t wait.
I’m about to embark on this detox and had a few questions. What are ALL the supplements that are needed? Are there different recipes for the green and antioxident drinks? Are there recipes for the cleansing soup?
I did this detox One year ago in October. I went to the doctor to find out my cholesterol was high. And for my age and height I was in the red for my weight. My primary care doctor suggest I change my diet and lose some weight so that my cholesterol would drop. I did my research. And by for this was the best thing I ever discovered. I did this detox for health reason to rid some of the toxins out of my body. The weight lose was a grand benefit. I did a total of 21 days and lose 28 pounds. When I went back to the doctor for my check up a month later my doctor was completely surprised and amazed at my results in weight lost that he asked what I did. I felt the best in my life. No more headaches, joint aches,or backaches. I had plenty of energy. I felt wonderful. It did not kill me to drink all that water. It did not kill me not to chew or swallow whole foods. It did not slow down my brain activity without protein as a matter fact I was able to function and focus more. And one year later I have only gained 5 pounds of the 28 pounds I lose with a 23pd success rate. That is grand! Doing this taught me discipline. The only way you don’t succeed in doing this is if you don’t really want to do it,you have no discipline and ultimately you live a defeated life. We tend to believe you can’t live without food for so many days when truthfully we can’t do with out water for so many days. People please educate yourselves about food and health as well as the “American Standard Diet” is it really neccesary to intake all of this food?. I will start the detox again in one week. I am looking forward to the end result.
I did this detox for 5 days. I did not do the colonics and all the extra stuff. I just stuck to the liquid diet. I have lost 9 lbs in the past 5 days. I do feel better but I will not continue with the detox. I miss chewing my food and tasting the crunchiness of my vegetables. I will continue to drink the green drink, antioxidant drinks, teas, homemade vegetable juices, and take my digestive enzymes but I will not continue with the detox. I will probably continue to do weekend cleansing but I don’t see myself ever doing the whole 21 days.
This detox is completely awesome! Even if you do not follow ALL the “requirements”, you will be healthier & feel MUCH better in the end. I direct a group program using this program. It is ALWAYS successful. The example schedule on this web page, however, is very inaccurate! You are almost never hungry if you follow the book & “eat” or drink your beverages every 2-3 hours as recommended! AND yes, as is true with all diets, you will gain the weight back if you do not follow the maintainance recommendations.
Hello all
I tried this 21 day detox, and it was AWSOME!!! This is coming from a person that has tried everything to lose weight. In 21 days I lost a total of 30 lbs. You must read the book before starting the detox because that is very important. Also I happened to have a juicer and did not do every single requirement because it was costly and I still lost the weight. Don’t knock it until you try it, and remember its not for everyone. Since the detox, I eat much more healthier and I am more knowledgeable about nutrition. I love it, and will do it again. Also you can make your own juices to better fit your taste. If you have anymore questions..just ask me. I will be happy to help. Take Care and stay healthy..
Congrats…This sounds wonderful. I want to begin asap however the supplements are expensive.. which do you think are most important, and those I can do without?
Thanks:0)
Did you go to the gym, or did you just walk??
what are some of the recipes you use? do you mind sharing them
Hi what juicer did you buy for this program? Was it affordable?
Thank you for sharing.
My husband and I would like to do the cleans. I just want advice on the things you did. Not sure if we can affort everything that is recommended.
thank you!
This is something I would like to try, it does seem quite costly, althought the results might be worth it. I think rather than jumping in and purchasing the package and the book, I might start myself off by buying a juicer and fiddiling with some liquid recipes myself.
i will like to do a simple homemade detox
WTF!!! THAT MUCH WATER A DAY CAN KILL YOU!!!
Can’t wait to try!
I have been on the detox for 10 days and I got on the scale on my 8th day and I had lost 13lbs. I can honestly say the detox is great and I feel great.
I have done the detox.I never viewed it as a diet, but as a cleanse or a jump start to a diet.It was awesome. I felt little to no hunger, massive amount of energy and it even got rid of the headaches I was experiencing before the cleanse. I lost 18lbs in 21 days and 4 more pounds the week after. Within half a year I gained 7lbs back, but that’s still a -15lbs success!I highly recommend it!
I’m just getting started with this detox today!! I can’t wait to see the results!! I’m so excited!!
This sounds like a good start- people should take this for what it is. You can start with this detox and follow up with a well- balanced nutritious diet and exercise, to achieve a healthy lifestyle. There are no miracles!
this sound like it would work… but only because your depriving your body of protein. when you get off the detox you’ll gain the weight back.
anybbody got result already?
I think this detox diet sounds great but its a little to expensive. I would like to try this.
This diet is the basis for the most common type of detox, it works great because it keeps you satisfied with drinking every 2 hours. People should keep in mind that the point for this type of diet is to detox, which it does, and weight loss is only a side effect. I did it for 14 days, and lost 12 lbs, but I felt better than I had in years.
I did the detox twice. The first time I lost 18 pounds in 21 days. I didn’t do all the additional items outside of the liquid meals and colonics, the base of the program. It was great and everything she said would happen in the book did. I have highly recommend the detox. I plan on completing 1-2 full 21 days twice a year and 3 days every quarter.
Just bought the book and decided to return it after I looked through it. I thought it was something I could do on my own but you need to have colonics done by a professional, lymphatic massages done by a professional, use a chi machine, and many other things that probably cost quite a bit of money.
what a cool diet i love healthy drinks
it’s dumb i tried it just to humor myself and lasted barely a day because those drinks tasted horrible and after a while you crave solid food.
You should always exercise a little! 30 minutes a day is energizing and lovely once you get into it. Plus an evening walk helps you sleep. But this diet seems rather extreme and I bet a lot of people gain the weight back once its over…
You drink only liquids and still have to exercise?
This Diet sounds good. Im going to try it and see if it works.
