Maker’s Diet

The Maker’s Diet is based on Biblical principles, and addresses not only nutrition, but focuses on the four pillars of health; physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional. The Makers Diet was written by Jordan Rubin – who suffered considerable health problems (Crohns disease). He was able to reverse the symptoms by incorporating a whole foods diet regimen – and a faith in the Maker Himself.

Maker’s Diet – Nutrition

The nutritional aspect of the diet is based on ancient Jewish dietary laws. Pork and bacon are to be avoided, as are fish without fins or scales (i.e. shellfish). Food in it’s most pure and natural form is to be eaten.

There are also a considerable list of ‘required’ supplements on the list.

More Than A Diet

The Makers Diet is a holistic 40 day program that encompasses many aspects – not just healthy eating. The daily regimens include prayer and exercise, as well as meal plans.

One of the most popular faith-based diets in recent years.

To quote the diet:

  • Eliminate your consumption of processed foods and chemicals in Phase 1. This will likely cause a reaction similar to detoxification, but this is expected and healthy. INCREASE YOUR WATER INTAKE AND REST AS OFTEN AS YOUR BODY NEEDS.
  • Remember that if you stray, you’re always only one meal away from regaining success. MINIMIZE OPPORTUNITIES FOR FAILURE BY AVOIDING SITUATIONS WHERE YOU CANNOT FOLLOW THE DIET.
  • DON’T EAT WHEN YOU’RE ANGRY, SAD, SCARED or ANXIOUS. These emotions shut down digestion and depress your immune system.
  • GET OUT IN THE SUN. Exposure to sunlight is very beneficial to your health, and can aid in balancing hormones, enhancing mood and building strong bones.

There appears to be no scientific basis for some of the medical claims of the diet. However a diet richer in unprocessed foods is certain to have some benefits.

Supplements – Buyer Beware

The Maker’s Diet also has a line of supplements – under the brand name “Garden of Life”. Beware of these – in 2004 the FDA ordered the company to “stop making unsubstantiated claims for it’s products” (reference). Author Jordan Rubin’s credentials have also been questioned.

However despite this there are many positive comments from adherents to the diet.

Beyond Organic

Jordan Rubin also has a new line of foods called Beyond Organic. They are marketed as, “NO Pesticides, NO chemical fertilizers, NO hormones, NO antibiotics, NO GMOs, NO grain, NO high heat processing, NO industrial shortcuts, NO milk pooled from hundreds of farms, NO fat skimmed, NO synthetic nutrients, and food from animals that are treated humanely”. At this point they mainly look like some meat, dairy, oil, and spring water products.

Feedback

I have followed the Maker’s Diet for going on three months now because I had some very serious digestive problems and am now feeling great, plus in the process have lost 12 pounds. I could have gone to the doctor and got a prescription for Irritable Bowel Syndrome, but decided I would spend my money on healthy foods. I am so glad that I chose this path” – Jeri

There is an easy way to get around the “required” list. Clenzology, for example, is the simple hygiene of keeping your nailbeds and mucous membranes clean but NOT sterilized (you need those microbes to boost your immune system!) Instead of buying the “required” (really, just recommended) kit, I use common sense: clean out under my nails when I wash my hands, wash my face with a skin-type safe, plant-based cleanser with more focus around the nose and eyes than before, use a qtip daily, and cut back on hand sanitizer (unless it’s the only choice in the bathroom). As for the natural nutrients that are depleted from our soil, take a supplement that is proven water or fat soluble so you actually absorb it, and make sure everything that CAN be organic IS organic. I use Double X by Nutrilite since it’s a phytonutrient, multivitamin and mineral combo you don’t get in nature. (I use it because I sell it and believe in the product, but I’m sure if you want something cheaper you can find ANYTHING on the internet!) No matter what you do, do your research. Take everything with a grain of knowledge (NOT salt! It’s overused :]). Remember- pay now or pay later! Just cutting out pork, shellfish, and bleached “enriched” flour when I can along with eating a “this not that” type of approach has given me the energy I need to keep up with my kids. I’m so excited that this book has helped my digestion, gotten me over a chronic bronchial issue, fights off my binge/starve pattern of eating (and regulated my weight), and has given me the “this is WHY you’re doing it” info I needed. DEFINITELY recommended!

I have a naturally high mloabteism, so I have always eaten junk and not cared. However now I am almost an adult, and I realize that I cannot continue to eat this way without becoming a diabetic or get a heart attack or something terrible. I am 126 pounds and 5’6, so weight is not a problem. It’s just my eating habits. Also, I’m skinny, but I’m not fit. So I’m looking for an exercise and eating program that would help me eat right, because I need structure, otherwise I will just buy junk and eat it. Seriously, I need help! This is an example of my daily intake of food (please be warned, it is grossly unhealthy):- breakfast: don’t eat it. i don’t get hungry til after 9 at sometime, and i’m not a fan of breakfast foods.- snack: at school i get hungry, so i will eat the granola bar from my lunch, and often buy a bag of chips from the vending machine. i also drink 2 juice boxes.- lunch: my mom typically packs me gross sandwiches, so i will buy another bag of chips, or not eat.- after school: i’m starving. i often buy a large bag (like full size, typically people only buy for groups) of chips to snack on throughout the rest of the night. i will finish this before i go to sleep. i also get a litre of coke to drink, i finish by bedtime also.- supper: subway sandwich, mcdonalds, a w, wendy’s. something convenient. if i go to subway i get a 6 inch sandwich and chips with pop, if i go for fast food i usually get a burger and fries and pop. a w i get poutine and a root beer float.- night time: finish off chips and pop. Seriously. I need help.
