The lemonade diet is a detoxification program written by the late Stanley Burroughs. The diet – called the “The Master Cleanser” was written in the 1940s and continues to be popular to this day. The current version was published in 1976 and is simply a 50 page booklet outlining the diet.

The Master Cleanser


This dietary regime is strictly a cleansing diet. Weight loss will occur, but it is not to be equated with fat loss. Much of the weight that is lost will be from fluid and water retention. Indeed, the book states that at least 1/2 the weight will come back on after completing the diet. Many people incorrectly use this for fast weight loss. This is not what the diet is intended for.

Detox diets such as the lemonade diet are not for the faint-hearted. They are difficult to follow – typically because we are so addicted to food. People experience varying degrees of success as their body begins to flush itself of toxins – but the first few days are hardest. Some only use the lemonade diet for 4-5 days, while others take it out to 2 weeks.

People report an enormous number of health benefits – relief of arthritic symptoms, infections, pain, gout, and many more.

A typical herbal detox will do the following:

  • Dissolves and eliminates toxins that have formed in any part of the body
  • Cleanse kidneys and digestive system
  • Purifies the glands and cells
  • Eliminate waste and hardened material in joints and muscles
  • Relieves pressure and irritation in nerves, arteries and blood vessels

Lemonade Diet Sample

  • 60 oz spring water per day (spread over 6 10 oz glasses)
  • 12 tablespoons Organic Grade B Maple Syrup (or 2 tbsp. per glass)
  • 12 tablespoons freshly squeezed organic lemon juice (or 2 tbsp. per glass)
  • a little over half a teaspoon of cayenne pepper (or 1/10 tsp. per glass) or to taste

The only other foods consumed is a laxative tea (“Smooth Move”) twice a day, and a saline (sea salt) wash. The laxative may be required due to the lack of fiber in the diet that may lead to constipation.

Breaking the Fast

This must be done gently, by easing your way back into solid food. Vegetable soup is a good starter, and fruits and vegetables shouldn’t be started until the second day out of the juice fast.

    Well, it’s Day 4 for me. I was concerned with no solid elimination on days 1 and 2, but whoa — Day 3 got me by the time I arrived home from work. Day 1: 235 pounds; Day 4: 227 pounds.

    My belly is no longer bloated; an under-the-skin acne I’ve had for 3 solid months is GONE, and my skin is clearer. What’s more, I have NO DESIRE to put any more garbage food into my body. I will continue for another 3-6 days and post again to let everyone know the results.

    Oh yes, I also had a finger on my left hand with an arthritic bump/swelling — it is almost normal looking right now. This is too much improvement to be a silly coincidence. I am a believer.

    Hey guys, well today is my day 1 of the diet. All my friends don’t think I can do it. I’m going to go weigh myself and post that weight to see if there are results. I’m doing it for both reasons, to lose weight and to cleanse my body.

    I researched this cleanse thoroughly, and spoke with several people who have done it. All reported great success — but it is NOT a diet. Again, it is a CLEANSE with the side effect of losing weight. I am on Day 2 now, and have not done the salt-water flush as yet. I plan to do that on Friday morning, when I have a day off work. I have not been hungry, but I do agree — I miss food…just the taste, chewing and swallowing I suppose!     I have done this cleanse about 8 times now in the past two and a half years. I have done 10 days about 5 times, 20 days one time and 30 days one time. I feel soooo good when I am on it, have a mental clarity that is unmatched, my skin clears up, and I just feel so light. However, when I did the 30 days, when I came off a “feast” response was triggered in my body for some crazy reason and it was the most nuttiest thing I ever felt afterwards. For two weeks I did nothing but EAT and obsess about what I was going to eat next. I had to go on a 10 day cleanse to get me back in sync and now I am fine after that. I had read somewhere that fasting can trigger a feast/famine thing in your body, but didn’t believe it until it happened to me! All that aside, this is the BEST method I have ever found to get control over what I put in my body and to feel healthy. I even stopped eating meat about a year ago after the 20 day cleanse because it felt so unhealthy to put it in my body!

    I’ve done the ‘diet’ several times now and my main reason for even posting is the second post waaaaay up above: to FED UP: WHY even respond to the 1st commentators question if her question bothered you so much?!

    Yes, people ‘can’ lose weight that may stay off long term, but honestly, with the way most Americans eat these days, any type of cleanse is better than no cleanse. Who cares if the person wants to lose some weight before the big day came up?

    . . make a batch of lemonade and chill out, lifes too short to be piss’n moan’n about everybody in the world. Make a difference yourself and ignore the rest.

    My husband & I are on our 6th day of the diet! We are not hungry but like others before have commented…we miss the food! I could eat Mexican food EVERY day, and cook it verrrry often. So that is my achilles heel (mot sure if that is misspelled…for the editors out there). We plan to go ALLLLL the way! Doing it together truly makes it all “move smoother!” ;o) i luv u babe!

    I have tried it. Awesome. Awesome. And guys& gals stop asking “can I eat aftr day 4, can I eat after day 3 ? ” u haven’t read the instructions clearly. You are not to consume food. It is a liquid based cleansing/diet with the aid of laxative tea and food is to be introduced cautiously after the 10 , 20 or 30 day fasting period. Good luck !

    I was very sick for a few months last year. I had a cough that would not go away, and I was in and out of the doctor’s office and taking a ton of medication. I was put on a 10 day steroid which made things even worse, and finally I decided to try this to cleanse my body. I did it for 9 days and lost 10 lbs. I felt great when I got off of it, but I can’t say that it was easy. My hardest days were definitely day 8 and 9. My cough did go away while I was on the detox. It clears your skin up and makes you look slimmer. I gained the weight back from drinking and eating badly. I’m starting back up tomorrow and think I know what not to do now once I get off of it since I’ve already done it before. Good luck!

    Hi, I’ve used this diet for three years, every six months for detox puposes and I can reassure anyone that I’ve had great results. I have a lot more energy when I’m on it and yes you lose water weight but you also lose weight. Who wouldn’t lose after eating nothing only liquids for 10-14 days? Everytime I have used the diet it’s always been good for me. I encourage any one to try it for 10 days or more!!! For the person who asked will they drop dead after four days….absolutely not!!! Enjoy! And oh yeah, you do not get hungry at all, that’s the best part.
