Lemonade Diet or Master Cleanse

The lemonade diet (Master Cleanser) is a detoxification program originally written by the late Stanley Burroughs.

The diet – also called the The Master Cleanser was written in the 1940s and continues to be popular to this day. The current version was published in 1976 and is simply a 50 page booklet outlining the diet.

This dietary regime is strictly a cleansing diet. Weight loss will occur, but it is not to be equated with fat loss. Much of the weight that is lost will be from fluid and water retention.

The Master Cleanse

Indeed, the book states that at least 1/2 the weight will come back on after completing the diet. Many people incorrectly use this for fast weight loss. This is not what the diet is intended for.

Detox diets such as the lemonade diet are not for the faint-hearted. They are difficult to follow – typically because we are so addicted to food.

People experience varying degrees of success as their body begins to flush itself of toxins – but the first few days are hardest. Some only use the lemonade diet for 4-5 days, while others take it out to 2 weeks.

People report an enormous number of health benefits – relief of arthritic symptoms, infections, pain, gout, and many more.

Lemonade Diet Kit

A typical herbal detox will do the following

Lemonade Diet Sample Recipe

  • 60 oz spring water per day (spread over 6 10 oz glasses)
  • 12 tablespoons Organic Grade B Maple Syrup (or 2 tbsp. per glass)
  • 12 tablespoons freshly squeezed organic lemon juice (or 2 tbsp. per glass)
  • a little over half a teaspoon of cayenne pepper (or 1/10 tsp. per glass) or to taste

Possible Detox Reactions on the Master Cleanse

  • Rashes and skin eruptions
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Aches and pains
  • Nausea
  • Food cravings
  • Insomnia

The only other foods consumed is a laxative tea (“Smooth Move”) twice a day, and a saline (sea salt) wash. The laxative may be required due to the lack of fiber in the diet that may lead to constipation.

This must be done gently, by easing your way back into solid food. Vegetable soup is a good starter, and fruits and vegetables shouldn’t be started until the second day out of the juice fast.

      Yes, perhaps look over the diets for one that it is targeted for weight loss. This is a cleansing detox which will bring the pounds you may or may not lose back very fast once you return to normal eating; since there is a drastic change in calorie consumption so quickly. Look for “weight loss” diets. A good diet is not a three day thing, it is lifelong.

      no pain from not chewing..if anything chew the lemon pulp that will be on your juice…its all in the mind if you really want to do it you can do it..i did it for 10 days and did two full days of oj after the 10 days…then i made vegetable soup…i think the most important thing here is how you get off the fast..must introduce food slowly and veg soups are the best way to go.

      You get to drink all the lemonade you want and occasion peppermint tea…the lemonade tastes delicious..you can adjust the hot of the cayenne as much as you can handle.

      I dont think you should do any strenuous work out.

      You aren’t supposed to doing anything physically strenuous while on Master Cleanser.

      Hi Lindsay!! I have personally tried this cleanse and it works! My starting weight was 208 I did the cleanse for Lent season last year and ended in 40 days at 176.
      Initially I started mixing the ingredients but as I was at the health food store I ran upon a premixed solution where all you do is add the water to it.
      It’s sold by Herbal Cleanse Simply Slender you can find it at for $18.00 a bottle it supplies a 4 day mix.
      I downloaded the Ebook as the Master Cleanse has been updated throughout the years.
      To answer your question is all you do is drink lemonade well if you’re doing it to detox yes, but for weight loss you can eat vegetables and soups but its recommended not to exceed more than a handful because of the mild laxative that’s included in the premix. This is to make it light on yourself in terms of the bowl movements.
      For anyone contemplating using the cleanse for weight loss do your research and come up with the best solution for your specific needs.

        Also I forgot to add I am now at 180 a year later and I have continued to maintain my weight loss for the most part.
        For the ladies here there’s also a new updated Master Cleanse for Women that adds a variety of meal plans conducive with the cleanse so your not just dieting but altering the way and things you eat.
        I also should add I did not follow the diet plan 100% and achieve satisfactory results.

      Most people do the detox from 4-14 days and yes only the lemonade and laxative tea as described in the review.

      I am wanting to try this, but was curious on how things went with eating while doing the diet? I don’t want to sabotage the diet if I do eat small healthy meals, but don’t really want to starve myself.
