Gluten Free Fat Loss Plan
Background
The Gluten Free Fat Loss Plan was created by Allison Westfahl, a certified personal trainer, with a masters degree in exercise science. When her aunt was diagnosed with celiac disease – a condition where people have an intolerance to foods containing gluten – she decided to try a gluten-free diet because she was concerned that the disease is hereditary.
The results of this diet were very positive for her and enabled her to lose 15 pounds effortlessly, while boosting her energy and eliminating the bloating that she previously experienced after eating. Westfahl claims that anyone can benefit from eliminating gluten from their diet, not only those with gluten intolerance, because in many people it may be a hidden factor interfering with the ability to lose weight and achieve optimal well being.
Gluten Free Fat Loss Basics
Allison Westfahl starts by explaining what gluten is and outlines the foods containing it. She then goes on to describe the ways that gluten can contribute to weight gain and produce negative effects on health.
Some of the factors that may be related to the potentially negative impact of gluten include that foods containing it are often made from highly processed and refined grains, they are high in calories and low in nutrients, they are often high in refined sugar and tend to trigger food addiction and overeating.
In addition to avoiding gluten, Westfahl offers detailed dietary guidelines to help you to achieve your weight loss goals. You must consume a minimum of 48 grams of whole grains a day; selected from gluten-free grains such as quinoa, amaranth, brown rice, buckwheat or oats. She also recommends a minimum of five servings of vegetables each day.
Dairy products are restricted because there is a strong connection between intolerances to gluten and dairy, however small amounts of non-fat Greek yogurt and goat cheese is acceptable. Fruit is also limited to one or two portions each day because it is high in natural sugars, which may slow down weight loss.
You are permitted to consume up to 45 grams of fat each day, which should be primarily selected from plant-based sources such as avocado, nuts and healthy oils. You are also allowed to indulge in a cheat meal once a week, such as a gluten-free brownie or ice cream, but it must be no more than 300 calories.
The book includes a meal plan, more than thirty gluten-free recipes, and fast and easy options for the days when you don’t feel like cooking.
