Dukan Diet

Dukan Diet on-line program

The Dukan Diet was developed by French nutritionist and medical doctor Pierre Dukan over ten years ago and has gained incredible popularity since its creation. According to media reports over 1.5 million French women rely on the diet to maintain their figures and apparently it has also been used by models and celebrities including Giselle Bundchen and Jennifer Lopez.

Until recently the diet has only been available in France but the English version of The Dukan Diet officially went of sale in 2010. In the UK it immediately went to the top of Amazon’s diet book list, and the online program is now available. The Duken Diet officially releases in the USA on April, 19, 2011.

The Dukan Diet Basics

The Dukan Diet is based around eating high-protein foods while severely limiting all carbohydrates including fruits, starchy vegetables, legumes and whole grains. Unlike the Atkins diet the emphasis is on sources of protein that are low in fat such as fish, poultry and reduced-fat dairy products.

Phase 1: The Attack Phase

The first phase of Dukan is followed for one to ten days depending on how much weight you have to lose. Dieters are told they can expect to lose between seven and ten pounds within the first five days.

During this phase dieters consume only protein foods that may be seasoned with condiments that do not contain fat or carbohydrates such as vinegar, mustard, salt, herbs and spices. Calorie-free drinks including water, coffee, tea and diet soda are also permitted and you can include one and a half tablespoons of oatmeal each day.

Dieters are warned that they may experience bad breath and a dry mouth during this phase, which may be alleviated to some degree by drinking more water.

Phase 2: The Cruise Phase

In this phase of the Dukan Diet, days of protein only are alternated with days of protein and vegetables. The types of vegetables allowed in this phase are limited to those that do not contain starch such as lettuce, spinach, celery, cucumber, asparagus and tomato. Vegetables can be consumed raw, steamed, or in soups and stews.

This phase is followed until you reach your target weight. Dieters can expect to lose up to two pounds a week on this phase.

Phase 3: The Consolidation Phase

This is the maintenance phase and commences once you have achieved your goal weight. You will continue to base your diet on protein and vegetables but are also allowed one portion of fruit as well as two slices of whole-grain bread each day. In addition you are permitted one extra serving of carbs per week, which may include foods like pasta or rice.

In this phase of the Dukan Diet you are also allowed one ‘celebration meal’ each week, which is increased to twice a week after you have been in phase three for a while.

Phase 4: The Stabilization Phase

This is the ongoing lifestyle phase of the Dukan Diet. In this phase you are instructed to go back to eating whatever you like while continuing to use the rules of the Consolidation Phase as a guideline. One day of the week dieters are instructed to eat only protein.

Recommended Foods

Lean beef, lean ham, rabbit, veal, chicken liver, chicken breast, turkey, fish, seafood, fat-free yogurt, low-fat cottage cheese, skim milk. egg whites, tofu, seitan, green vegetables, onions, herbs and spices, mustard, sugar-free ketchup, oat bran, coffee, tea, diet soda, Stevia, Silverspoon Sweetener, sugar-free chewing gum.

Sample Dukan Diet Meal Plan

The following is an example of a meal plan for a protein and vegetable day in phase two:

Pros

  • Fast results in the initial stages can help to boost motivation.
  • Does not require calorie counting.
  • Includes vegetarian options.
  • Includes a meal plan and recipes.
  • In the final phases of Dukan the ‘celebration meals’ can help psychologically to improve adherence to the diet.

Cons

  • Highly restrictive and requires elimination of many healthy foods including fruit, grains, legumes and nuts.
  • Some dieters do not respond well to low carbohydrate diets like Dukan and can experience fatigue and mood swings.
  • Many dieters experience constipation, headaches and bad breath on high-protein diets.
  • Not suitable for those with a history of gout, high cholesterol, kidney disease or eating disorders.
  • Dietary boredom is highly likely due to the limited food choices, especially for those who don’t enjoy eating animal products.
  • Encourages consumption of artificial sweeteners and diet soda.

Conclusions

The Dukan Diet is an extreme approach that emphasizes low-fat protein. While dieters can expect to lose weight following this plan, it is highly likely that weight will be regained upon a return to normal eating habits.

I am 65 years old and have tried I don’t know how many diets. The Dukan is the only one that ever worked for me and that let me keep the weight off. I have weighed 200 and more for 50 years. I now weigh between 180 and 185. I notice that one negative comment about the Dukan was that when you returned to “normal” eating habits it was “highly likely that weight will be regained.” I have been eating normally now for months and have not regained weight, that is, if “eating normally” actually means “normally” and not the way I used to pig out. I weight daily now, and if I go over 185, I have a pure or close to it protein day,and then I am back to 185 or less in a day or two. THE DUKAN DIET HAS CHANGED MY LIFE FOR THE BETTER!

In Australia, all flavours of “Forme” are just fine. I’ve been having the fruit ones, as well and have lost over 5kg now (my mother and I both). Fruit yogurts are absolutely fine – there is no need to be that podantic, the fruit in yogurt is such a small amount that it can’t possibly have the effect that a whole serve would have – what you are avoiding is the carbs. In yogurt, the amount of protein it contains trumps any amount of carbs the fruit can contribute.

Help! Mood Swings! I have been on the cruise phase for about 3 weeks, I am very pleased with my weight loss but am starting to have more and more weak moments where I feel like I am getting closer and closer to a cheat! My worst problem though is that I have been really REALLY grumpy, all the time…I feel really sorry for my family who have definitely noticed this. I am also constantly tired and lacking motivation. Is there anything that anyone can suggest to help balance my mood swings? I really don’t want to give up now, I have come so far! Thanks

I have mostly stuck to the rules rigidly, however, I decided to eat yogurt with fruit…I figured if it’s 99% fat free with no added sugar, then having a tiny bit of fruit in my yogurt should be ok, especially if it made the difference in me eating it or not!

    Kim,

My friend was telling me that the best kind of Yogurt is 0% like Source. If you’re looking into any other ones, make sure you compare sugar on the labels. Best tip I was given so far :)

Kim-flavour of no fat yogurt ow low fat as long as it has no added sugar can be coconut, lemon, vanilla, you can add vanilla extract with sweetener like stevia and the oat bran, no fruit yogurts.

I’ve been on this diet since 9/12/11 and have lost 13lbs so far. I definitely enjoy not having the sugar/carb craving that I use to have. Here’s what I do with the oat bran pancake- Instead of yogurt/or fromais which is hard to find in the US, on the days I can have vegetables I use a couple TBSP of packed pumpkin with cinnamon and nutmeg. I always mix up and let it sit for 15 minutes to get thicker, makes a better pancake.

Im 5th day in on Attack Phase have lost 2.5kg so far, no real cravings but adjustment without veg or fruit is restricting in attack phase. For N 90lbs seems a very small weight for an adult…are you very short ?..Thats like 40kg !!!….That seems too extreme.

I’m in the attack phase, day 5, feeling tired. Don’t have scales at home but clothes are looser, will continue with attack phase another 5 days if I can. Can you have too much yoghurt (non fat)? Are protein drinks OK? Meat is boring!

This is for MICHELE – who asked about being on the Dukan Diet while also being diabetic. Short answer Michele – yes you can! It is probably the best diet for you. Being Protein rich has a wonderful effect on your insulin, being the main hormone driver in the body. Insulin levels seem to even out. For goodness sake still take your meds though!! Please check this out with your Doctor, or Specialist. Mine are both wonderfully informed. Menopausal women will also find this diet very, very effective for the same reasons. It certainly did for me … diabetic and 51!!!
