Candida Diet

candida-dietCandida is a group of toxic yeast-like microorganisms (Candida albicans being the most common), that live among many other organisms in the human mouth, throat, intestines and genital/urinary tract. Under normal circumstances yeast live in 80% of the human population all the time with no harmful effects, as they are in balance with other bacteria.

Candidiasis

When the natural flora in the intestinal/digestive tract fail to control the candida yeast population, “overgrowth” occurs.
Overgrowth is uncontrolled multiplication of yeast cells, resulting in various symptoms commonly termed Candidiasis or just Candida.

Candidiasis affects a wide variety of organ systems. Common examples of candida infection are vaginitis; vulvar rash; oral thrush; conjunctivitis; athlete’s foot, ringworm, jock itch, diaper rash, muscle and joint pain, canker sores, sore throat, tingling sensations, kidney and bladder infections, infections of the nail, rectum, and other skin folds, effects in the gastrointestinal tract (constipation, diarrhea, colitis, abdominal pain, gas, distension, and heartburn), depression and even diabetes.

In immunocompetent persons (those whose immune system is functioning normally), any warm, moist part of the body exposed to the environment is susceptible to infection. This infection is mostly superficial, and proper treatment leads to full recovery.

In immunocompromised persons (those whose immune system has been impaired by disease or treatment), more serious systemic illnesses may occur.

Causes of Candida

Poor diet, an out-of-balance intestinal bacterial environment, and weakened immunity can all give rise to candida. Overuse of antibiotics destroys the natural flora in the intestines that keep the candida cells in check. Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, AIDS patients, infants, diabetics and others with weakened immune systems are more susceptible to an infection of candida (candidiasis). Corticosteroids and oral contraceptives also upset the balance of intestinal flora. Yeast cells mutate, requiring ever higher dosages of Nystatin (the anti-fungal drug), so that the yeast is
strengthened and the immune system further weakened.

Candida Diet Plan

Reversing candida

  1. Detox
The first aim of your Candida cleanse is to cleanse the system of the toxic byproducts of Candida. Fasting, colon cleansing, wheatgrass, fresh vegetable juices, plenty of water, detox herbs, exercise, and anything else that extracts toxins.
  2. Reduce the yeast population in your system
Candida treatment must bring yeast cells back into balance. Use anti-microbial herbs and phytochemicals in formulas from your natural or health food store that include a combination of these powerful herbs, 15 days on then 5 days off, repeating as long as needed. The 5 day break discourages mutating yeast from multiplying and developing immunity to the herbs.
  3. Inoculate yourself with probiotics
Probiotic bacteria favorably alter the intestinal microflora balance, inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria, promote good digestion, boost immune function, and increase resistance to infection. People with flourishing intestinal colonies of beneficial bacteria are better equipped to fight the growth of disease-causing bacteria. Lactobacilli and bifidobacteria, along with acidophilus (found in yogurt), maintain a healthy balance of intestinal flora by producing organic compounds (lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and acetic acid) that increase the acidity of the intestine and inhibit the reproduction of many harmful bacteria. Probiotic bacteria also produce substances called bacteriocins, which act as natural antibiotics to kill undesirable microorganisms.
  4. Improve your diet
A diet to eliminate Candida is a long-term lifestyle – and in fact diet is your best defence against candida. Yeast loves sugar and simple carbohydrates; if you keep feeding yeast cells they will multiply, and even the best anti-microbial herbs won’t keep them in check. Eat a disciplined diet for at least 3 months, then When your symptoms disappear, you can expand your diet. But don’t revert to old habits, or the candida symptoms will quickly return.

Keeping Candida in Check

Foods to Avoid

Aged cheeses, alcohol, chocolate, dried fruits, fresh fruits, fermented foods, mushrooms, vinegar, glutenous foods (wheat, rye, barley), all sugars, honeys and syrups (that includes any ‘ose’, like lactose, sucrose etc), and foods that contain yeast or mold (breads, muffins, cakes, baked goods, cheese, dried fruits, melons, peanuts – although nutritional and brewer’s yeasts are not harmful, as they do not colonize in the intestines).

Foods to Eat

Vegetables (including plenty of raw garlic), protein foods (beef, chicken, eggs, fish), live yogurt cultures (both dairy and non-dairy,) FOS*, whey, acidophilus, green algae (such as spirulina and chlorella), nuts, seeds and oils, and non-glutenous grains (like millet, rice, rice bran and oat bran).

___________________
* FOS, or Fructo-oligosaccharides, are nondigestible dietary fibers that help to keep the stomach and bowels healthy.
FOS are considered a “prebiotic” because they nourish the naturally present “friendly” bacteria (especially Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli) which help to ward off infection in the digestive system.

I thought I had fibromyalgia cause I have a lot of the symptoms but lived in a house for 7 years that had toxic mold which I was unaware of. I have recently moved to another house with the same problem. I realize I have been exposed to mold for a long time and started searching on net for answer. That’s when I thocandida oils have candida overload.

Has anyone ever tried threelac and is it as good as they say it is? They say that the diet won’t get rid of candida and that if you don’t stay on the diet for ever the yeast wil come right back and you are where you started that is discouraging I don’t want to be on this strict of a diet for ever. Has anyone one tried it. Thanks

Irish brown soda bread is really good for the candida diet, I kept this in my diet so I could eat it with eggs in the morning and it didn’t make me flare up at all.

There is a brand, McCambridges, that is sold in Ireland which is yeast and sugar free. It beats having to bake bread on top of being a slave in the kitchen when trying to come up with some new recipes to keep mealtimes interesting! It’s pretty difficult to be on this diet but digestion-wise I feel so much better than 5 weeks ago.

I am a candida suffer who suffered for 20yrs because i didnt know yes could effect my face….. My chin would itch unbearably. I was able to connect the itch to the eating of sugar. when i would stop eating sugar for at least three days the itch would go away! Then i started taking vitamins and taking care of my body, especially vitamin b complex… and the candida flared up with a vengence… even when i would stop eating sugar my chin was still itchy, and thats when i started searching for answers and came across candida. Since changing my diet, avoiding all foods that raise my blood sugar level or feed the yeastl… i feell like a new person….. i take at least 17 different herbs and vitamins….. Im excited about living again….

does anyone have a recipe for the candida diet for bread that is good for toast and a sandwich? I have tried a few I got off the net and they didn’t work out and I am afraid to try anymore because it isn’t cheap to buy the different flours and the recipe be missing something. I would really like to have toast with my eggs in the morning not to mention the option of sandwich for a box lunch. Thanks you in advance.

Here is hope for anyone struggling with the diet. In hind sight I have struggled with candida for 7 years now because of massive doses of antibiotic and a poor diet that yeast loves. I have always struggled with my weight and would lose some and then gain it back. The gravings while I was on a diet were so great that I felt I was weak and had no willpower. in the past year I have been suffering from depression, chronic fatige, itchy sore rashes everywhere, itchy ears body aches to the extreme all day everyday and restless legs at night. every morning i would wake up feeling like I never slept.Last year I was looking on the net trying to figure out what was wrong with me and I came across candida but I quickly found out that western medicne knows nothing about it and want to give you a pill for every sysmtom you have I looked into the diet but was so overwhelmed with it I couldn’t even start it. finally I had suffered enough I ended up with thrush and I do not want that ever again. I started the diet 4 weekes ago and I cannot believe how good I feel the aches are gone the depression lifted with in 1 week and I was very depressed with my days spent trying to figure out how I could end my life and in one week of the diet the hopeless thoughts went away. I have no cravings at all and I am now eating to live and not living to eat it is a miracle. So please please if you think the diet is too much just sit down and plan out the first week and you will feel so much better that you will want to stay on it. I made a homemade chicken soup and a beef stew and having them in the fridge for the first week to fall back on if I didn’t know what to cook or didn’t want to cook it was there and I was not as tempted to cheat believe me once you start to feel better to will find it easy to stick to.

Good luck to everyone and Happy Easter and stay away from the chocolate.LOL

I have had Candida for a long time. I have felt all the systems and it all made sense theore I researched. I have been trying to work through a diet and it has been frustrating since I can lose all the food in minutes by having something not knowing it will aggravate the problem. I have cut sugar out and lost too much weight. It is hard to find a balance because I am not digest raw veggies but and other foods but there is so much that makes me sick. I don’t know if I am reacting to the die off or aggravating the problem. No one understands and I am frustrated and cannot create a meal nor does anyone understand and they look at me like I am crazy. I am alone in this and feel like it is the end of me. My goal is to gain 10 pounds by June but a may gain a couple and then get set back by being sick from something I ate.

I have just completed the strict candida diet for 8 straight weeks. It was extremely difficult for the first two weeks but I didn’t cheat AT ALL for the full 8 weeks.

Pros: I lost 22 pounds. All my cravings went away. I sleep better, and have more energy. No heartburn (had a real problem before), and generally feel more peaceful

Cons: I was pretty miserable for the first 3 or 4 weeks. Low libido, and to be honest, not very fun to be around at social events where people are eating and drinking “normally”. Im finding coming off the diet difficult. I don’t enjoy food like I used to, and even though I am slowly introducing foods Im gaining weight very quickly and it makes me nervous that I will end up back where I was. Striking a balance is tough after being on this diet for 8 weeks.

I am experiencing die-off and feel nausea, sick all over, but am sticking to the diet. I get confused becuse some sites say you can eat certain things then other sites contradict it. I am craving starch and sugar, but am determined to beat this thing. If I knew for sure I could eat brown rice, that would help. Some sites say yes, others no. Help

John – I was told that I can have blueberries and an apple a day after 3 weeks. I have had the blueberries so far and they went over great (no symptoms) Over time you can reintroduce some foods back into your diet but do it carefully – just a small amount once a day.

I had a live blood analysis just over 3 weeks ago and learned that I have candida. So many things fall into place now – why I have lost weight so many times and gained it back, uti’s, gas and bloating etc. I loved carbs and really felt sorry for myself the first few days not to mention feeling really sick and weak. Now I see the good in this whole thing – I will now lose the weight and keep it off (down 12 lbs) I feel 100% better (no cravings, no burning stomach) I bought a couple of cook books and am learning a whole new way to eat. There is no way I will play around with this eating things I shouldn’t as I have suffered enough with the cravings and uti/s.

    Hi

i am on my second attempt at thisn diet as I found it so difficult the first time around with the inconsistent advice on what you can eat.

I am also vegetarian and I am vege because I really hate the taste of meat and have done since I was a kid, so considering eating it again is not an option for me.

I am also intolerant to eggs and all dairy so eggs for breakfast or plain yogurt are out for me. Therefore, starting this diet seemed like hell and for the first week and a half it really was.

however, mid way through the second week I started to pick up and see a difference in how I felt and I have lost 8 pounds so far.

I have another 20 pounds to go so I am really pleased with this. I put on weight suddenly about 3 years ago and have been really depressed with my weight as despite exercising and cutting out food I couldn’t shift more than a few pounds.

now it seems like i have found my answer! I know this diet is hard but you will feel so much better for it and I agree, now I am on it I can’t really imagine wanting to stop and return to the food I had before.

i no longer have any sugar cravings, I do not feel hungry at any stage and I make sure that I eat little and often which really helps.

Keep with it everyone, we’ll get there in the end.

With it is in the form of vaginal discharge, oral trush but mots annoying and worrying is the fact that I have facial and scalp dermatitis and for the last two weeks I have hand exzema. I started the candida diet. with the take of kolorex, probiotics, etc
my problem is that I am so heavily constipated that I am considering quitting now. I am normally quite regular but since the start of the bloody diet it’s been a nightmare.
Has anyone else had the same sort of experiense?

I just learned that I have candida, I saw a live blood cell analysis. I have been addicted to sweets and carbs in general all my life, have yo-yoed with weight loss and gaining it back, severe cravings, burning stomach, urinary track infections, running nose etc.
I came to this site looking for help – this is my 4 day of treatment. Is it normal to feel so sick? I ate something I shouldn’t have by mistake last night and really felt severe flu like symptoms.
I am trying to be in a state of thankfulness – finally I will lose the weight and it will stay off and I will feel so much better…..but I’d really like to know – it is normal to have ups and downs? I hope that one day I will be able to eat wheat free, gluten free, yeast free bread. In the mean time I will get through this first step!

My mom has Candida and was misinformed by ER doctor as to how to go about treating it. She is on Fluconizole (I don’t think I spelled that correctly) as an anti-fungal and has eliminated all Gluten from her diet. I have found a list of foods she can and cannot eat, and was wondering how long she will have to stay on this diet. It is very strict and she is losing alot of weight. Also, after the duration of the diet, will she be able to eat regular foods ever again? She loves Pasta and I would love to make it for her again someday. Thank you.

The Candida diet is a process. Very strict for the first couple of months and then less strict after. However, people susceptible to yeast infections will always have to reduce the amount of simple sugars and simple carbs they consume if they want to remain healthy. Also, recommended supplements are encouraged. candidafood.com

Reading that others feel like I do is comforting. It’s hard to just live daily most days. I am going to try and change my diet. I am going to miss soda a lot but it will be worth it if it works.

I’ve been craving something sweet and have been baking my own desserts with Xylitol, which is supposed to destroy Candida fungus. Does anyone know where I could find a web site that will tell me if Baking powder. Baking soda, Arrowroot powder, Cream of Tartar, Lecithin granules and/or unflavored Gelatin are safe to use? Thank you.

I believe I have had candida for 25 years. I had thrush a few times the past five years. I am on Meds for an Immune illness. Now, i have all the symtpoms of candida. I am going to give this a go. I hope it works.

I am tired of being tired. I am tire of forgetting and not remembering everything. My short term memory seems to have disappeared. I hope this will help.

Had a growing oral issue 7-8 years ago. Writing this from memory. Coated tongue, progressive loss of taste (normally strong flavored foods became almost indistinguishable except for obviously knowing what I was eating). Doctors, dentist, oral specialists, etc all pointed to candida (thrush) and I tried various remedies/meds for a number of months with no success. General health and well being ebbed. Frustration and maybe even some depression with nobody being able to pinpoint the problem grew. Finally, (and in hind sight I was amazed why I hadn’t figured it out sooner) it donned on me my love of fruit juices (cranberry, raspberry, etc) was flooding my system with sugar and swamping any treatment I was trying at the time. I immediately eliminated the juices and most other obvious sugar containing sources and, voila, within a week, maybe even sooner. All gone.
Fast forward to 2011. Had total knee replacement surgery in Oct 2011. Six weeks of oxyc kept the very substantial pain at bay but flexibility was stuck and I needed a manipulation in early December to break the scar tissue. Successful except quadracep was partially torn during the procedure (under anesthetic) but post manipulation PT was again very painful. Back on oxyc for about four weeks. Three plus months of painkillers messes with your digestive system and produced some symptoms similar to an earlier diverticulitis episode. Two weeks of antibiotics, too many sweets over Christmas and again a digestive system out of balance. Coated tongue (green/black) abdominal cramps, abnormal BM, fatigue. Am ramping up probiotic supplements and scrapping sugar and carbs. Expect improvement shortly. The main culprit is sugar. Most of my life I never had a ‘sweet tooth’ (always preferred a second helping rather than dessert) but found myself snacking on too many sweets over this past Christmas. My advice, junk the sugar and see if some improvement isn’t noticeable almost immediately. Warm/hot salt water gargle isn’t a bad idea either.
