Cambridge Diet

cambrigde-dietThe Cambridge Diet is based in the United Kingdom. It has it’s origins from the Cambridge University in the late 1970s. The Cambridge Diet was officially launched in 1984, but now has distributors worldwide.

The Diet Plan

The Cambridge Diet is a Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD) and is made up of pre-packaged foods. The foods have been formulated to provide precise amounts of vitamins, nutrients and calories – and are available as sachets (shakes or soups), bars, or “brix”.

The daily calorie levels start as low as 415-500 calories per day. After a period of time (a maximum of 4 weeks), the calorie levels are upped (first to 790, then to 1,000 calories per day).

It is essential that copious amounts of water are drunk during the diet to avoid dehydration.

A Risky Endeavor

The Cambridge Diet should be used only under the guidance of a medical practitioner In the UK, the diet is only available through accredited counselors and to people with a BMI above 25.

Despite research confirming the benefits of VLCD’s they should only be used under medical supervision. Exercise cannot be maintained (except for very low intensity exercise) during the diet, and additional fiber may be required to prevent constipation.

Be very careful with the Cambridge Diet.

Different Versions?

The Cambridge Diet is only available through distributors. The distributors in the USA provide slightly different formulations to those in the UK.

@cherie, your body is using keytones for fuel which are produced from breaking down fat. This causes a funny taste in your mouth.

Just finished my 4th week on Step 2 of CD and I have lost 16lb. I did Sole source for the first week, but found myself feeling weak. I save my small meal for the evening and it makes me feel human. I have 4 children and seem to be in the kitchen making something for someone. I have found that difficult and have on occasion sneaked the ends on someones peanut butter toast crust that one of the kids have left on the plate. Licking the knife with the peanut butter on it. And that week my weight loss was not great. I’ve learnt to chew gum or put washing up liquid on left overs to stop myself eating it. Good luck everyone. We can do it!!!!!

Simply the WORST diet ever! This is like torture and to be perfectly honest it is very dangerous! During my time on sole source i found it very difficult to concentrate when driving, walked into people when shopping as i had no concentration and suddenly my job that i know like the back of my hand became very difficult! Awful awful diet should only be given to mureders and sex offenders. Dont do it to yourselves, diet and excersize is the key there is no smart quick fix, this is simply a money making project and if you really want to starve yourself save your £s and just eat less calories a day!

Hi all, 2 weeks on CD, 1st week I lost 8lbs, and I have now had my 2nd weigh in and I have lost another 9lbs, I am wearing clothes I had not worn in ages. I do walk about 16 miles per week and this I am told helps with the weight loss. Initally it is difficult but you have to persevere believe me its worth it. I just keep saying discipline and I love the fact that my clothing is lose. Stay strong (:-)

Hi! I can thoroughly recommend the Cambridge Weight Plan! You have to really psych yourself up to begin – set a date a month or so in advance and then “GO FOR IT!I lost 6 stone (84LBS)in 20 weeks last year and I can honestly say I was never once hungry! I was “tempted” – but never gave in. 12 months later I am feeling great and getting loads of compliments. i am determined NEVER to put on weight again. My husband, who really loves his food, lost 28lbs within 25 days – men seem to lose so easily :(

    Hi,

My name is Louise, I’m 25 and currently weigh 17.6 stone. I have tried the usual ways of loosing weight but they never seem to work for me. Since I met my partner and settled down my weight has just got out of control. About a year ago my wonderful partner popped the question, of cause my answer was yes. A few weeks ago my now financé started asking questions about when I wanted to get married. To be honest before this point I had not really thought about it. Just then it hit home would I really want to be a ‘fat bride’??? and so started to research diets on the internet. A friend in work recommended the CD (after she went from a size 28 to a 10!), after a bit of research I emailed a local consultant asking for a bit of advise. My consultant was so lovely and supportive that I decided to give it a go! It’s been 4 days on the step 2 (810 calories – three sachets and a very small meal per day). I’ve been advised to stay on this step until my BMI comes under 40 then I can move onto complete abstinence from food.

I am so excited about starting this diet. I am currently a size 22 and want to be a size 12 for my wedding next September… watch this space! x

Hi, I and my partner have been on the Cambridge Weight Plan for 7 weeks now. I have now reached my target with a loss of 30 pounds and he has lost an amazing 66 pounds. Admittedly, he had far more than me to lose in the first place. We have both found the sachets of food easy to prepare, tasty, and nutritious. Since starting the plan, we have had more energy, no headaches which were quite common and both look good in our clothes again! I would certainly recommend this plan for a fast weight loss, but not for a slow, long term plan. It is now up to us to start maintaining our new weights with healthy eating.

I have been on the Cambridge Diet for 7 days today. It has been really challenging. Every movie/show on telly seems to have people with delicious food! The whole FOOD issue has been magnified and I feel starving each day. BUT… I have stuck to the diet like gum to a shoe!
Strangely, besides feeling better in a Body which has definitely lost AT THE LEAST 2kg /4.4 pounds [only weighing in tonight with counsellor] I have experienced other benefits.
I am sleeping better and the daily headaches I experienced seem a thing of the past – no more anti-inflammatories or pain-killers are going down the Hatch. Bloating of the stomach also has disappeared.
So – despite having to negotiate hourly, sometimes ‘minute-ly’ with my Brain to ‘Hang in there, that I will give It more food soon’ [yes I’m conning my Brain] – I am heading off tonight to purchase a second week of FOOD :)
Good conning everyone :) Stick to it – heath is paramount!!
    …. and THANK YOU Cambridge!!

I’ve been doing the Cambridge-500 program for 20 weeks exactly, including the 3 stabilization steps of 2 weeks each, during which I lost a total of 21.9 kg = 48 lbs. After that, my weight has been a staggering 50 kg/110 lbs (height: 1.71,6 cm / 67.6″), which I have maintained ever since. Needless to say is, that I have a very fine bone structure and therefore the CB counsellor was prepared to bend the BMI-rules for me.

I drank lots of water (2.5 liters = 4.40 pints) as was being prescribed. Every other 7 weeks, I ate natural food during one whole week, together with the food CB-replacements, all being clearly outlined in the accompanying folders, which had been given to me by my Cambridge counsellor, whom I visited weekly.

My waist changed from 101 cm/ 40 inches into 58 cm/23 inches. I have been on top of the world ever since, not experiencing any water retention, hurting joints, cellulite, abnormal fat storage around the knees and jodhpurs anymore, being able to wear pretty clothes sizes XXS or XS.

My 18-year old daughter and I regularly swop blazers, jeans and tops and that seems to be the natural thing to do. ;-)

Lou, don’t know if you’ll check back here, but I hope you do. I went on a low-carb diet in 2009 and after a few weeks on it found I could not stomach bread, pasta and some of those other carbohydrate rich foods we know and love. I went to my GP and as it turns out, I had coeliac disease and never knew it!

Apparently 1 in 3 people where I live have some intolerance to gluten (which is found in any products made with oats, barley, wheat and rye) and many of them only discover it after undergoing a low carb diet.

If you are experiencing stomach pains or cramping after eating a gluten-rich product, ask your doctor for a blood test.

And the best part? It turns out the reason I was always a little chubby was because I was eating gluten when my body couldn’t handle it. It stored it as excess fat because it couldn’t process it any other way.

Now that I’ve eliminated gluten, I don’t have to diet strictly to maintain a healthy weight :D

Ate it, then felt so ill that it did make me sick, it was like my stomach couldnt take it. I am worried that I wont be able to stom ach food again, I dont even want food now. Does anyone have any experiences like this.
