Cabbage Soup Diet
The Cabbage Soup Diet is a 7 day meal plan, aimed at achieving fast weight loss. It is not a long-term weight loss solution, but is known to be effective over the short term. Apparently it originally came from a hospital (Sacred Hearts Hospital) to stimulate weight loss for surgery patients – but this cannot be verified.
Pros

- The change from some of our normally junky eating habits can be beneficial.
- Vegetables from the Brassica family (such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower) have been found to aid in preventing cancer.
- Many say they enjoy eating the soup.
Cons
- Some complain that the Cabbage Soup a little too bland.
- Be prepared for gas…
- Requires will power.
- Lacks good nutrition
- High in salt.
- Not a long-term answer.
Cabbage Soup Diet Plan
This diet is not recommended
| Day 1 Homemade cabbage soup, plus any fruit, apart from bananas. |
| Day 2 Homemade cabbage soup, plus other vegetables, including a baked potato with butter for dinner (potatoes are off-limits on other days) |
| Day 3 Homemade cabbage soup, plus other fruits and vegetables. |
| Day 4 Homemade cabbage soup, plus anything up to 6 bananas and fat-free milk. |
| Day 5 Homemade cabbage soup, plus 6 tomatoes and up to 450 grams of meat or fish. |
| Day 6 Homemade cabbage soup, plus meat(beef) and vegetables. |
| Day 7 Homemade cabbage soup, plus brown rice, pure fruit juice, and vegetables. |
No bread, carbonated beverages, or alcohol.
Cabbage Soup Recipe
6 large green onions
2 green peppers
1 or 2 cans of tomatoes (diced or whole)
1 bunch celery
1/2 head cabbage
1 package Onion Soup Mix
1 or 2 cubes bouillon (optional)
1 48 oz. can V8
Juice (optional)
Season to taste (salt, pepper, parsley, curry, garlic powder, etc).
Note: There are a number of variations to this recipe.
Summary
The biggest drawback of the Cabbage Soup diet plan is the sheer monotony of eating cabbage soup. However some diets (such as the negative calorie diet) basically look at the nutritional properties of the cabbage soup diet, and make it more interesting by combining other foods that have the same effect.
There are also serious concerns regarding the nutritional quality of this diet. On many days the diet is low in protein, calcium, and essential fatty acids. There also high levels of sodium or MSG (Monosodium Glutamate).
Weight loss will probably occur due to the low calorie intake.

This diet is great- I have used it several times , one week at a time. I have lost 10- 15 pounds. It is a good way to jump start your body to losing weight or to reach a goal for a special event. To make the diet have variety– I make the soup without putting in the dry onion soup mix. After the soup is made I take out a portion for each day and change the seasoning. I put in Italian seasoning– basil, oregano, etc and have Italian soup. For another day — I use Curry or Mexican type seasoning. This gives me a variety so I don’t get bored.
I think this diet is brilliant- you must be doing something wrong if you are gaining weight!!
I have done it twice in the past month and have lost over a stone now!!!
can you add other vegetables to the soup such as zucchini, squash, and asparagus or does it mess up the diet??
I have just started the diet, on my second day. I am not bothered at all by eating soup and chewing on raw carrots. If i lose weight to give me a kick start, i will be delighted.I only need to lose a stone. will keep you up dated.
do you have to follow it completely? I mean must you eat each day exactly? what if you simply ate the cabbage soup?

I am now a fat obese lard women now my husband is not satisfied if you know what I mean. We’re getting a divorce, but if someone can save me and make me the babe I once was. This plan will not pull through. I do have hope.
I have used this diet as your supposed to, and then every other week for 6 weeks now and i have lost 25lbs. There are so many variations you can do with this diet that it actually becomes very tasty.
this diet is wonderful. i came from india with one dollar i bought cabbage soup with that one dollar and it helped me with my weight.. now i have a rich husband and a sexy body! thanks cabbage soup diet! my kids karan and tabatha love it too!
I have used this a couple of times. the first time I made the mistake of not being creative with the soup of the veggies. Just raw veggies will turn you off so quick. Use your imagination – salads, cooked veggies etc…will permit you to complete the program and lose. don’t cheat and it works – by day three the cabbage will have the undesirable effect on your digestive tract though.
this diet works im on it right now on day 3 lost 5 pounds not over yet but the method is with every bite i eat i lose weight

This diet is great. It’s amazing what a week can do. I notice a difference in my pants, you know the ones you have to squeeze into, well squeeze no more Jessie. I popped a button on my favorite white shirt, and after one week of this diet I was able to sew that button back on and hey I’m a hott mama again. It works just stick with it, you will make it I know.
I have done this diet once before, it really helps me to get a jump start and keep up with a low starch, no white sugar or flour nutrition plan. I do not follow the recipe for soup, I add alot of different vegetables, bay leaves and use low sodium chicken stock. Had tough time on day 4, but believe due to an excessive physical routine. I had success in losing 6 pounds last year and am on day 6, at a loss of 5 pounds!
this diet was not good at all. The taste was horrible. Our grandmas that make everything without salt or and seasoning make better soups than this. Don’t recommend at all. Oh and weight wise, we lost about 2 pounds the first 2 days but is not worth it for that bad taste!

this is probably the worst diet i have ever heard of it is bland and boring i may have lost a few pounds but i did not think it was worth it.

this diet does work…al of you phonies out there who says it didnt…ur just jealous cuz u coulndt stay on it. IT WORKS!!! and its only for a week…and you lose 10 lbs, like others say its a good way to jump start your body for other diets. Im not fat i only weigh 135 and im 5’6 …but i want to get down to 120.

This diet works, I did it about 10 years ago and lost 80 pounds in just 8 weeks(along with walking)…it takes A LOT of will power, try onlu eating the cabbage soup if you get hungry and all the other time eat the other foods. Also try nibbling all day on the veggies(carrots, celery, etc.) this will help no be hungry. I am getting ready for a wedding and so I am on the diet again now!
Brilliant soup, I have just finished the 7th day and I have lost 5kg like I supposed to. Now I will try to loose more weights because this has given me the courage to go on loosing weights. From reading other people that have tried this soup, I will eat the soup every other weeks like someone has done and see if I should loose 12 kg. brilliant soup.
This diet is a great way to start better eating habits. It helps to prevent those junk food habits and after the seven days you can begin to eat healther. I love it. This is the only diet I would recommend to anyone that is having trouble starting or diet or just want to change their bad eating habits.
