Blood Type Diet

A blood type diet is a nutrition plan based around your blood type. This kind of diet became popular with the release of Peter D’Adamo’s book Eat Right 4 Your Type.

The book continues to be a bestseller. D’Adamo claims that the diet will not only bring about weight loss — but can assist with allergy and infection resistance, and will achieve overall good health.

Dr. D’Adamo started out as promoting the eating of the right foods as a way to improve health and wellbeing.

However, in the last several years  he has developed a whole line of nutritional supplements consisting of pills, shakes, bars, skin products, and even chocolates developed nutritionally for each of the four blood types.

He also has supplements designed to combat various conditions and disorders as well as home tests to use to assess  blood type, free radical count, and genotype.

What is a Blood Type Diet?

Most of the population has blood type O. Here the prescribed diet is low-carbohydrate, high in proteins (such as meat and fish), and low in dairy products. The author suggests specific foods to avoid; such as avocados, brazil nuts, and oranges. Type O should also engage in lots of exercise.

Blood Type A should avoid red meat, eat plenty of fish and vegetables, with a low dairy intake. Light exercise only.

Blood Type B should avoid chicken and bacon, eat plenty of meat and dairy, some fish, and plenty of fruit and vegetables.

Blood Type AB combines the A and B diets.

Is This Diet For Real?

blood-type-dietThe author claims that much of the recommendations are based on scientific evidence – but perhaps it is too early to make this claim. Metabolism and/or sugar/insulin sensitivity are probably key factors in deciding diet – not blood type.

Two people can have very different metabolisms and have the same blood type. One could be sensitive to carbohydrates or sugar, whilst the other needs a high carbohydrate diet.

Weight loss and other health improvements may occur on this diet – not so much because of blood type combinations, but because of a healthier diet! The author encourages people to cut down on processed and refined foods. Good advice for anyone regardless of blood type.

The book also includes low calorie diets that will probably bring about weight loss in anyone (once again, regardless of blood type).

Eat Right 4 Your Type Banned Foods

Any diet containing a long list of banned foods can be difficult to follow. Eat Right 4 Your Type and the various blood type diets included encourage a predominantly meat and fish diet, while grains, potatoes, cereals, breads, pasta are not encouraged. Interestingly, certain vegetables and fruits are also banned.

Exercise

Eat Right for Your Blood Type does promote exercise as way to increase health and vitality as well as for stress relief. Each blood type has exercises that are recommended as suitable for their bodies as well as recommendations for intensity and duration.

Pros

  • Many have reported better health from eating according to their blood type.
  • Dr. D’Adamo has years of experience as a naturopathic doctor.
  • Weight loss can also occur.
  • Promotes the use of whole foods.

Cons

  • Dr. D’Adamo isn’t a medical doctor.
  • Supplements are promoted heavily.
  • Many healthy and nutritious foods are banned for certain types.
  • Eating out can be difficult.
  • Many people are healthy eating all foods despite their blood type.

Conclusions

Many have reported dramatic results after they have begun eating according to their blood type. However, this could largely be attributed to the fact people are giving up refined and processed foods, which is recommended for all types.

Originally Dr. D’Adamo’s Blood Type Diet started out as predominantly whole food nutrion based, but seems like since has evolved into a front to sell all kinds of nutritional supplements and miracle concoctions to users of  the blood type diet plan. The supplements are expensive and most likely unnecessary.

Mary Daly. I’m also blood group O and i would highly recommend this diet for the symptoms you have. I also had sinus problems and depression and I found that by changing what I ate, I completely eliminated all sinus problems I had and my depression lifted dramatically especially when I started exercising. It may sound drastic but what D’Adamo suggests about eliminating dairy and wheat really worked for me. I also bersitis, a joint problem in my hips, and the diet really reduced the pain. It may sound obvious but I really quickly discovered that what I fed my body had a direct influence on how it performed and it completely changed my mood. If your getting dizziness I would also suggest getting your iron levels tested as it’s a problem most women experience especially if your blood group O. The high intake of protein in this diet would definitely benefit that. I got an iron transfusion a few years ago to deal with my low iron levels and instantly had more energy and my dizziness was gone, especially right after I stood up. I’m O negative and I completely changed my lifestyle by following this diet. You’ll definitely see an improvement in your sinus problems by eliminating dairy from your diet. Give it go!! I can guarantee that by changing what you eat you’ll notice dramatic changes in your body and after even a week you’ll begin to feel empowered to take further steps to improve your health.

This is ridiculous. I’m type A negative and cannot survive without milk and cheese. I put cheese on everything and love to drink milk. I haven’t missed a day of work in over 4 years, so obviously I’m healthy. I will say that I eat very little meat and love raw vegetables. But the problems with dairy products do not seem to be an issue for me!

I’m a type A (42 YO male), and for the last week I have been on a vegetarian diet with almost no dairy. The change has been quite amazing. When I eat now, instead of feeling a little sleepy afterwards, it actually feels like I had an energy drink. I don’t get cold as easily, and I seem to be in a better mood! I may never eat meat again!

    Good day,
I just want to find out something regarding the info for the bloodgroup A. I am allergic to fish and diary products. What can I replace with those that I am allergic to.

Try a course of probiotics (friendly gut bacteria) or prehaps you have low stomach acid therefore your body wouldn’t be digesting proteins very effeciently. Keep a diet diary for a couple of days and make a note of when you have a problem, maybe thst would help identify the offending food/s. Sugar can give you flatulence as can intolerances to diary or wheat.

Ok, I dont really need to lose weight but something I’m eating is giving me GAS that smells… I dont know exactly what it is I take enzyme pills that help I’m 56 years old and wonder if I’m eating wrong foods. I know if I eat apples or pinapple I dont have this problem at all so I’m guessing my body doesnt produce enough enzymes on it’s own any tips?

My mother told me about this diet then I bought the book. I found a doctor in Australia that I went to see for some guidance. I noticed changes within a few days and have lost some weight in the meantime. I am looking forward to further weightloss as a bonus to general well being. Suggestions to others: visit the website, buy the book and find a practitioner.

    Hi,
I was diagnosed with early onset parkinson’s and went to a natural path to see what I could do. They put it to me this way. If you take care of yourself, exercise and re-align your diet, it will help you and even slow the progression of PD. I have been on this blood type diet for 3 month. Lost 28 lbs. Feel great, skin cleared up, no more headaches, or bowels problems. I could go on. My PD symptoms have decreased by 50-70%. Let me tell you that it is unbelievable.

I did the type O diet in 2008 and lost 30kg. It is easy to follow and not expensive. Just avoid the foods that aren’t right for your type and stick to the portion sizes that they suggest and it is achievable.

Your sample menu for Blood Type O says “SNACK: cake”
This is wrong and should be corrected. I’ve read the book and wheat is a avoid for O’s. Nowhere in the book for any blood types does it say CAKE is recommended. A lot of O blood types reading that just might do the diet based on that!

    Hi all i m a type O

after reading this book a realized that genes talk from the time you are little , all the No Foods mentioned in this book are foods that i actually didn’t like since i was little and my parents tried feeding me with them. So IN CONCLUSION your body tells you what you should and what you shouldn’t eat , you just have to listen.
