Beverly Hills Diet

beverly-hills-dietThe Beverly Hills Diet was a diet book originally published in 1981 by Judy Mazel. It has since been revised, and re-released as the New Beverly Hills Diet.

The diet is based on a theory that the body needs the enzymes found in certain foods in order to digest the food properly. The author believes that when food isn’t digested, it turns to body fat. A strange belief because the body cannot metabolize the food until it has first been digested!

The Beverly Hills Diet Plan

The diet is based on a food combining principle (called conscious-combining). The main food group of the diet is fruit, but the diet has vegetable-only days, fruit-only days, and other days when some starchy carbohydrate is allowed.

Breakfast

8oz prunes

Lunch

Unlimited strawberries

Dinner

Baked potato

Drinks

Water, coffee, or tea.

More all fruit recipes can be found here.

Diet Summary

This diet is dangerously low in daily calories (about 800), and also low in proteins, and many many other nutrients. The theory behind is completely unproven, and fantastical. The promised weight loss is 15 pounds in 35 days.

It would be very difficult to sustain such a diet without become deficient in certain nutrients, or simply putting the weight back on after the diet.

Not to be tried.

I first went on the diet for three weeks, 25 years ago, lost 15 pounds, and have continued to live on the excellent maintaince program ever since. I eat an excellent diet and easily control my weight. I have lovely hair and nails (those yummy sesame seeds every night), and never suffer indigestion. Almost every healthy thing suggested in the original book has since been all in the news as a healthy thing to do. Many people focused too much on the actual diet part and did not look at the maintaince which is the most important. At 63 I easliy keep up with women 20 and 30 years younger than me.

think about it dieters, i know we all got this thought of fruits are great, but what are they most made out of? sugar. eating heaps and heaps of it will just make you high and the next thing afer it burns out will just causes you tiredness and low energy. but i still gota say all the food in this diet are my favourites… although I haven’t personally tried this diet, but i reckon it’s dangerous- low in daily calories as it said above, and also low in proteins, and many many other nutrients which will result bad poops and stink breath, bad nails, ugly toungh, pinples, night blindness and heaps of minor problems but they’ll be much worse if you keep this diet long, ah what am i saying…just think before you try no matter how great this diet sounds, you know what they say- starve yourself is very bad for you and like someone said “One theory of of this Diet is that – if the food you eat is not digested properly, it turns into body fat, well, if foods are not digested properly they cannot be properly absorbed. Therefore, if the food is not absorbed then it is impossible for it to be converted into “fat”.” so yeh….

I haven’t personally tried this diet, but I would say it would work. I find when I go on holiday to somewhere tropical (queensland, AUS in my case) I eat a lot of fruit, and don’t feel like heavy meals. I always end up losing a heap of weight, like 14 lbs in a week.
    This diet looks great!

  • August 27th, 2008great diet!

its great but not when it comes to weight. yes you do lose weight, but its not permenant.. I did it and ended up with great skin! ^_^ I did lose a few pounds but lost the majority on Atkins.

This diet may help you lose weight without any danger, but I do believe that they need to get hte facts right.

My husband and I did this diet together. He lost almost 40 lbs and I lost 30 lbs. It wasn’t that hard, and you were never hungry, but you do get tired of pineapple, mangos, papaya, etc. but you do have days that you get to eat what you want as long as you conscious combine. It takes exercising afterwards and healthy eating to keep from gaining it all back, and then you still continue to loose. You just have to remember the rules. This diet is not for diabetics!

I did this about 7 years ago and lost 15lbs. I kept it off for a couple years, but gained the weight back so I’m going back on it. For those of you who wanted the diet plan, I’m posting the 1st week.
    Morning – Noon – Night
    Day 1 – Pineapple – Pineapple – 2 bananas
    Day 2 – Papaya – Papaya – Mango
    Day 3 – Papaya – Pineapple – Papaya
    Day 4 – Watermelon
    Day 5 – 2 bananas – Dry apricot (230g) – grapes
    Day 6 – Dry plums (230g) – Strawberries – 2 bananas
Day 7 – Apples or Watermelon

The old diet is about 6 weeks long, this is just the 1st week… I have no idea how the NEW diet is.. But this one lets you add carbs and protein and there’re even days with your choice of desert or carb meal, and mexican or chinese dinners….

does anybody know the day 4 and 5 menu for this diet?

  • July 18th, 2008dawn

forgot to mention – got me hooked on eating watermelon seeds with the melon – tasty, nutty flavor!

My friend and I did this diet in 1988. We both lost weight and kept it off for years! We had a lot of fun doing it. There’s really good information about digestion, absorption and elimination in the book that most MDs don’t know or tell you about, but chiropractors or DOs have told me for years. We’re starting to hear more about enzymes and food combining in the main-stream news, 20 years later! Read the book! The brief diet summary here is pretty inaccurate. I had to get past the author patting herself on the back for getting the information – I’d heard most of it before.

I have done it before but went back to my regular eating habits and gained back the weight. I think it is good though and you do lose about 30 pounds in six weeks. I would like to try it again. Can someone put up the outline for the six weeks or at least the first seven days. I remember the first four days.

  • May 29th, 2008Rose.

Gonna try this. Wanna find more info on it though.
And besides there’s nothing wrong with starving yourself.
You lose alot of weight =]

I lost about 30 pounds on this diet about 4 years ago. I have since gained some of that back so I’m doing it again. You don’t ever go hungry because you can eat as much of the approved food as you want. It’s amazing. And after the first 6 weeks of the hard core diet phase, there are just certain rules you follow-you don’t have to cut anything out of your diet forever. It is a lot of fruit and not a whole lot of meat although chicken is in the first 6 weeks of the diet-as much as you want on the approved day-but if you are a big meat eater it’s not for you. I don’t eat much meat anyway so it’s perfect for me.

this diet doesnt really suit my lifestyle… just so you know the author of this diet died… wonder what she had for breakfast, lunch and dinner… Strawberry overdose?

  • May 15th, 2008Lou

I tried it…it’s fantastic. I lost all the weight I needed…about 30 pounds, in about six weeks. This was back in the eighties. Isn’t it more unhealthy to carry around all that toxic fat than to leave a few things off your plate for awhile? It’s not a life long eating style, just a temporary fix. Then be careful not to regain it.

  • May 15th, 2008Anonymous

My friend and I both went on this diet in 1982. We both lost all the weight we needed in a very short time. As for the people who say it is unhelthy…well, it isn’t meant to be a lifelong way of eating; how can a few months hurt? Actually, it is much worse to be overweight that to leave a few things off your plate for a while.

  • May 5th, 2008thin already

gretchen, how long did it take?

  • May 4th, 2008tulous

only desperate thin obbsessed people would go for this diet. it basically is telling you to starve yourself

  • May 1st, 2008Gretchen

OMG! This diet is TOTALLY HAWT! I use to weigh 170 now im down to 105!WOW! It’s a miracle, right? I LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEE IT! xoxo

  • April 28th, 2008bevrocks

this diet is awesome! you get all your pyramid nutrients, but in a week rather than a day. You are never hungry on the diet, and can eat all day if you’d like…except in between food groups. I lost 8 lbs in 5 days and could see the fat dripping off my body. its not hard to keep it off if you follow the rules. anyone could do this diet, and the results are fast and pontentially long term.

  • April 9th, 2008Olivia

wow… another starveyourselfthin diet… brilliant *rolls eyes*
