Bernstein Diet

bernstein-dietDr. Stanley Bernstein is a Canadian physician who specializes in medically-supervised weight loss programs. Dr Bernstein’s weight loss practice began in 1974 – and has now grown to over 50 clinics in Canada alone. Dr. Bernstein’s program is clinic-based only – and there are currently clinics in Canada and the USA.

What is the Bernstein Diet?

The Bernstein Diet aims to lose 4-5 pounds per week and involves 3 visits to the clinic each week during the program.
The Bernstein diet program is a combination of low calorie diet (regular grocery
store foods), behavior modification, education and vitamin and mineral supplements. The daily calorie intake could be anywhere between
800 — 1350 calories per day – it is a case-by-case situation.

The diet claims that only fat tissue is lost during this rapid weight loss phase, and all other tissue (muscle, electrolytes, fluid) is retained. One of the major features of the diet is the vitamin and mineral supplementation – this is achieved by vitamin injections.
Updated:Patients receive a Vitamin B complex injection.

Dr. Bernstein has a number of phases on the diet – a Weight Loss phase, a maintenance phase and also the “tune-up” diet for small amounts of weight loss.

I’d love a copy of the food list as well. I have one from 2007, but I suspect there are additions on it with all the new products out these days. If anyone is able…karenshaver@rogers.com

I find that an excellent snack in the evening is 1/2 piece of Dempster’s 100% whole wheat bread, toasted, with a few sprays of I Can’t Believe it’s Not Butter spray, topped with a mixture of 95% fat free cream cheese mixed with liquid sweetner and cinnamon (mmmmm) really satiates my sweet craving!! :P

I am anxious to hear how everybody is doing on the diet. New Year’s resolutions still in play?

I am getting close to my half way point and starting to lose motivation to stay on the diet. I feel better about myself (my current weight feels better going down than it ever did on the way up) but am not seeing the same results that Dr. Bernstein describes – where you can “expect” to lose between 4 – 5 lbs each week. My results are significantly less than that.

Any suggestions on how to keep this going?

This is for Amy, this is a great diet to follow, but you CANNOT do it while pregnant. They actually ask you before starting the diet if you are pregnant and they will turn you away, and if you become pregnant they cut you off. while pregnant you CANNOT diet, as much as you may want to. The year before last I lost 70lbs on the Bernstein and I had to stop when I wanted to get pregnant, which I did, and even though I gained 110lbs (ouch) while pregnant, I had to wait to do the diet. wait until the pregnancy is over, then you can easily lose that weight (40lbs) in about 2 months on this diet! Best of luck!

I went on this diet about 5 years ago and lost nearly 70 pounds! It really wasn’t hard after getting used to the first week or so. Sadly though, I have gone back to my old stressed-out way of eating and now I am excited to start back up on this diet again. I won’t be paying for the injections this time though.

Could someone please send me the updated food list? I can tell by reading some other posts on other sites that there are many more acceptable choices now than there was available 5 years ago!

Thanks and good luck everyone! :)

I was wondering if someone could email me the food list(?)/diet plan for BC.

I am hoping there is more than 1 diet plan to follow as i am pregnant and i don’t think 800 calories/day would be healthy for me. I’m only 10 weeks pregnant but i could really use help losing 20 lbs (technically i am overweight by about 40lbs)

i will ask my dr before getting her to administer b12 shots.

    thanks!

Hi DD / Don – I sent out the lists – good luck!

Weighed in today and was down 3 lbs from Friday – talk about motivation :-)

It appears there are provincial differences around the availability of B6 / NeoBex / B12 with Ontario being the most liberal.

My mom, dad and myself did this diet and it works! My mom was the only one who went to the clinic and did the injections. My dad and myself just went to superstore and bought some b6 and b12 vitamins in pill form, we all lost 20lbs in the first month. We all fell off the wagon after about 6 weeks (Xmas), none of us gained a pound. Now we back on it, can’t wait to see the old me again.
Good Luck Everyone, it’s a hard diet to follow but those 100cal chocolate bars sure help!
