Bernstein Diet
Dr. Stanley Bernstein is a Canadian physician who specializes in medically-supervised weight loss programs. Dr Bernstein’s weight loss practice began in 1974 – and has now grown to over 50 clinics in Canada alone. Dr. Bernstein’s program is clinic-based only – and there are currently clinics in Canada and the USA.
What is the Bernstein Diet?
The Bernstein Diet aims to lose 4-5 pounds per week and involves 3 visits to the clinic each week during the program.
The Bernstein diet program is a combination of low calorie diet (regular grocery
store foods), behavior modification, education and vitamin and mineral supplements. The daily calorie intake could be anywhere between
800 — 1350 calories per day – it is a case-by-case situation.
The diet claims that only fat tissue is lost during this rapid weight loss phase, and all other tissue (muscle, electrolytes, fluid) is retained. One of the major features of the diet is the vitamin and mineral supplementation – this is achieved by vitamin injections.
Updated:Patients receive a Vitamin B complex injection.
Dr. Bernstein has a number of phases on the diet – a Weight Loss phase, a maintenance phase and also the “tune-up” diet for small amounts of weight loss.

**Reality Check**
I went on Dr. Bernstein diet back in 2001 when their offices were still expanding. back then my health plan covered half of the injections. The total weekly cost was $150/week back then. I had just had a baby a year before and was finding it tough to get the weight off myself. I started at 160 lbs and got to 110 lbs in about 4 months which was amazing. I also had another family member do it with me at the same time. It was tough but i had tons of energy even though all i was eating was just around 500 cals a day. Trust me it is not anywhere near 800 cals as they say. While their no nonsense approach in the clinic appts worked for a while after a while it got annoying and if you “cheated” they would take away your fruits. At times i felt i was developing an eating disorder with their strict approach towards their patients. And if you didn’t follow through they would eventually kick you out of their clinic. So i lost all the weight and even more than i wanted since pre-pregnancy i was 128 lbs but never went for the maitenance. Insted i went ballastic after having cravings for months on end. In one year i was up 35lbs and was depressed. it didn’t end there. I am an emotional eater and found that the diet wasn’t realistic for real living. yet i still loved the energy it gave me, my skin was better and was in good health.
Eventually in 2004 i was back up to 169 lbs and went back. I did it again for a month and lost 20 lbs and never went back. Instead i did the Atkins diet which was popular that year and i had the food products in stores to be able to do it. Both berstein and Atkins diets are both ketogenic diets ( meaning your burning your own body fat for fuel) and was eating ALOT more. I was losing about 3 lbs/week on atkins depending on the grams of carbs you eat-lowest is 20 g of carb per day. i stayed at 40 grams and lost the weight a bit slower but stuck to it. Over 4 months i lost 20 lbs and then went back to Dr. bernstein clinic with a friend who wanted to try it. i was I did it for a week again and couldn’t do it. I never went back. This time I said it was for good.
However, all the hype about the injections of B6 and B12 ( it is really only B12- a pharmacist told me so) can give you energy but it does not really assist in weight loss. it more orless provides you with the energy to stay on the diet. The blue cal-k pills that you buy there are to keep your postassium levels up since Bernstein diet is a ketogenic diet, you lose potassium.
I still liked the idea of the diet and the amount of weight i could lose and still wanted to lose another 20 lbs. yet i didn’t want to go back to the clinic. The clinic i went to was no so nice to my friend and threatened to kick her off. As medical professionals, some of them did not have a very good bedside manner. I spoke with my doctor about b12 and was told you could buy it at a pharmacy without a perscription and you could also buy a box of injectable needles there along with alcohol swabs. The b12 cost? $5.00 a bottle which lasted me a month!! the alcohol swabs? $3.00. The needles? $25.00 a box for over 100 needles. The exact same cal-k pills i found for $25.00 for 2 bottles of pills. I couldn’t fathom the amount of money they were charging.
So this is what i did. I hated the idea of being on that diet 7 days straight. So did 3 days bernstein and the other 4 days i did atkins. Then start the cycle over again. Why? after 3 days your body goes into starvation mode and it will hold onto the fat and store it thinking there will be another faminine. However, on the fourth day, i did the atkins diet where i ate things like cesar salad, bacon, cheese, low carb bread, etc. In the 3 days, i would lose 2-3 lbs and then get to eat again with atkins. while on the atkins i would not gain weight. i would maintain what i lost on bernetein because again they are both ketogenic diets and both low carb. When you trick your metabolism your always surprising your body so it doesn’t develop a pattern that it can get used to. The higher and lower calorie days work. in one month of doing this i lost 12 lbs. not the 15-20 a month on bernstein but i still lost and was satisfied and never hungry. afterwards, i upped my carb count on atkins and slowly went back to a regular low fat diet. I never knew what portion control was in the past so this i had to watch and the times that i ate. i used to eatr at night and this is also what killed my weight loss. Now i am back to a healthy blananced diet after all this yo yoing and have had to look within myself to change my bad habits once and for all. I exercise regularily and watch the scale. i am able to have a weekly treat and feel satisfied.
So, in the end, Dr. Berstein does work but when it is a complete diet mentality and even maitenance program is unrealistic. it is not a lifestyle change like some other programs. It takes a while to change habits and you have to stick to them. if you decide to do this diet you can never go back to real life living even low fat diets for a long time. Anything you put into your mouth after you do this diet can make you put on 2 lbs instantly. And i mean instantly. You will be putting regular foods like other fruits you couldn’t eat before back in your diet at the speed of a turtle. Don’t expect to go out to a restaurant for a nice meal because it won’t happen if you want to keep the weight off. The only way I found a transition immediately and to get more food into my system without gaining it back was through atkins.
I recommend trying it at least once but it is costly. it will feel good at the beginning to get the weight off and the first 3 days are a killer. the third day will be the worst when the sugar is coming out of your system. after that you will be alright. Check your health plan if you have one to see if they will cover part of the injections. You will be reimbursed if they do cover it. The weight loss is astounding and people will definitely notice but they will also be jealous and try to get you off of it. I’ve had family memebers try this. If you’re paying that much money to do this diet then you’d better be serious. Good luck!
do you have to combine the neo-bex with the vitamin b12 injectable???
Hi Aaliya: No, you do not have to combine the two injections. I am just using the Neo-Bex and am losing weight. That was all I got at the clinic as well. Cheers!!
OK…lots of talk about two different injections, singles and doubles.
1. Are you supposed to take BOTH the B complex and the B12?
2. If SO, how many cc’s of each?
3. Where do you get your B6?
4. Is it recommended to take B Complex, B12 AND B6 injections all at once?
Thanks.
Hi! I’ve read so many comments on this page, and the thing that scares me the most is that everyone is afraid of the money problem, and now im getting scared about going in the clinic and signing up for it, and not being able to pay for it because the price mite change. I was looking at taking this program for 9 weeks. and I was wondering if any of you can give me some info on how much would that be. the thing is I work all day, and the way I gain weight is that I eat just one time a day, and I know its not healthy but I can’t help it because I dont really have time to eat more, and probably I dont have the motivation to do so! SO please someone tell me how much it will be to do this program for 9 weeks!
One week is $150
4 weeks costs 599
For 8 weeks it’s about $1150.
it gets cheaper the longer you pay for in advance.
hope this helps
I have been on the Dr. B diet since the 9th of May. Since that date I have lost 50 pounds. I feel great. No problems with energy or motivation to go to the clinics. I know it’s not cheap, $600+ a month however I know myself, I would not keep to it if I did this on my own, the every other day weigh in’s really help me, positive feedback baby! I plan to the first portion of the maintenance after which I should be on my own. I am not too concerned with gaining again, as before I started I had had been slowly losing weight by simply eating low fat, and staying around 2000 calories a day, with one cheat day a week. The problem was I was not losing the weight fast enough and my concern, with some doctor input, was that I was headed for metabolic disorder, the first step to diabetes.
In short I recommend the diet, as long as you can afford it. If you cannot you will stop too soon and or become depressed that it affecting you daily life.
The way I look at the cost of it is this, if I spend $2000 on this diet to lose the 80+ pounds I need to I will probably gain an extra 10 years or so on my lifespan – seems cheap to me.
With these caveats:
Make sure you eat all the protein the diet allows
Make sure to eat all you are allowed on the diet, 2 bread, 2 protein, 2 fruit, 2 veg and the 2 garnish
Make sure to get some exercise. Most reviews indicate that the Dr. B diet does not stress exercise. Not true, all my meeting with the doctors have made sure that I am getting some exercise. The just don’t want you to go get a personal trainer and hit the gym at the same time… the diet does not have enough protein in it to support that.
Tell the doctors of any issues with dizziness, feeling cold etc, they will up your potassium, which should stop those problems.
Get the blood work that they ask you to.
And remember that this is temporary, an end to a means.
Good Luck!
thanks so much teresa, how long were u using the neobex and how much did u lose if u dont mind me asking?
hi
has anyone hadany luck with neo-bex or vitb6/vitb12 inject. Because i surely have not. I find it very difficult to follow. I did drbd, for 5 months a year ago with no cheating. Sice then u have gained 12 pounds and trying to lose it on my own but it so hard. I swear drb must put something else in there to supress the appetite! Anyways tommorow is monday and I will give it another try!!! I will keep you posted.
Hello! This question is directed to those doing the home injections…..
Can anyone confirm or advise which of the following injection is more effective or is combining the two any good?
Din # 00147680 – Neobex
Din # 00521515 – Cyanocobalamin
I checked with the Pharmacist at a No Frills Drug Store and they carry both!
Any details you can provide is appreciated!
Thanks!
Hi
Reading the posts It seems like a single dose just contains B12 which you can buy over the counter so how about a shot everyday? Going to look into Neo-bex.
If I get it then I should mix 35ml of each in my “double” shot.
Hi I am able to buy the Neo-Bex over the counter, just need to order it a couple of days in advance. The cost is
$100.00 for 10ml. So do I still need both the Neo-Bex and the cheap Vit.B 12. Because someone said there is Vit. B. 12 in the Neo-Bex. Would be alot cheaper to use both because the B.12 bottle was only $7.00.
Hi Angel,
There is no vit b12 in the Neo-bex.
So I should mix both using .35ml of each for my “double”
Hi everyone, I bought the neo-bex at walmart for 66.97 and the b.12 for only 4.97 also at walmart. I’m doing the diet on my own and have lost 4lbs already in 4 days. Good luck to everyone. WE CAN DO IT.
Hi Could you please give me more infor. If this posts more than once I am havinng trouble posting. Are you taking 1 shot mon wed and fri. What amounts? Please help me I am still going to Dr. B. and I am paid up till end of the month so if I could do this at home it would help me alot.
THANKS.
I’m a little confused. I’ve read all the posts. The last few posts say to mix B12 with neo-bex – .35ml each — but earlier posts say to use the neo-bex without mixing. I have the neo-bex and the B12 – which I purchased at Shoppers’ – I have to wait to get the B6. Much earlier posts say to mix the B12 and B6. When I was going to Dr. Bern.. I was given the B12 and not the B-comp (which is the neo-bex) – I want to stick with the one I was given there. So, could someone clarify if I should be mixing the B12 with the B6 and if I decide to use the neo-bex, I use it alone without mixing…..OR is it possible to mix the neo-bex with the B12?
I’m so glad I came upon this site. I was about to go back to Dr Bern for a tune-up when I discovered this site. That would have been my third tune-up in the past five years. The diet works but as soon as you are off the weight comes back. Unfortunately, I cannot afford the long maintenance program and the inconvenience of going into the office. The diet itself is not realistic and cannot be maintained.
I started the diet two days ago and I’ve already lost a few pounds using the neo-bex only. I’ve also decided that I would eat some of the same foods as the Dr Bern diet plan but with a few modifications here and there…not much modifying but enough to keep off the hunger.
Good luck to everyone.
Zain thats great!! Are you losing weight using both neobex and the b12? And how many ml are you taking? I want to buy it too, but i’m unsure whether to buy the neobex or the b12?
Hi Zain How much are you taking of each?
hi everyone,
To answer the last 2 comments. I use 1ml of neo bex on monday, wednesday and friday-that also the days when I weigh myself to see if Ihave lost any weight. As well, I use the b.12 twice a week-either tuesday and thurday, or tuesday and sunday, just to give myself a break. It seems to be working out very well.
Hi All, I’ve been using the B12 injections and only eating the proportions and allowed foods on the diet for 4 days now… and I’ve dropped 4 1/2 lbs…
FYI.. the B12 (1000ml) and needles (10pack) came to $10.71 and I was able to get the food list from someone I know on the actual diet!
If anyone is just taking the neobex with the diet, can you let me know how thats going?
Thanks!!!
Bonn
It’s working good so far!
Hi
I started the Dr. Biernstien diet and would really appreciate some info on the how-to of the shots and vitamins. Please help! I can’t keep up with the outrageous cost of this diet.
Hi,
I have been using b12 tablets. How do you mix neobex shots with b12?
Hi,
I am interested in this diet. How do you mix B12 with Neo-bex.Isn’t Neo-bex a shot?
Hi Gita…read all the post from the beginning….lots of useful information. Right now, I am using the neo-bex on its own. Earlier post said that the neo-bex is the b-comp and the b12 is mixed with b6 that Dr B uses. If you are mixing it should be .35ml of both (b12 and b6). Or as Zain suggested you can alternate the neo-bex with the b12 (use them on alternate days. Good luck!!!
Hi You can buy the B-12 shots over the counter under 10.00 and I bought the Neo-bex at The Superstore for 68.00 the Neo-bex does not have b-12 in it. I have not started (still going to Dr.B.) I plan to mix them in one shot using .35ml of each. I bought extra Potasium pills and will take a good Multi-vitamin everyday. I will also contiune to follow the strick diet Dr.B has. If this is not enough after a couple of weeks I will try .50 of each.
The point of the shots is to help the body break down the “fat” on your body and use it for fuel. Taking the vitamins orally is not the same a lot of the vitamins are lost in your digestive system.
When I start I will post my result.
Hi I am going to start using the Vit B12 and Neo-bex in a couple of weeks right now I am still going to dr.b. You need to take the shots, taking the vits orally some of the vits are used up in the digestive system. Your body will use some of your fat for fuel where you take the shot….thighs, stomach or butt. I plan to use .35 of both and if that does not work I will increase to .50.
The Neo-bex was 68.00 at Superstore and the B-12 was 6.00.
I could not get it at Wal-mart was told I need a prescription for the Neo-bex. The B-12 you can buy at any drugstore. Some people are just using the B-12 and are having good results.
The main thing is you need to follow the strict diet of Dr. B.
can you tell me where i can purchase the B12 and B6 in canada?
I bought it at Sobeys. I am sure you can purchase it over the counter at Shoppers Drug Mart. Just ask at the Drug Counter
Just ask at any Drug Store Counter they have it behind the counter and you don’t need a presciption
