Bernstein Diet
Dr. Stanley Bernstein is a Canadian physician who specializes in medically-supervised weight loss programs. Dr Bernstein’s weight loss practice began in 1974 – and has now grown to over 50 clinics in Canada alone. Dr. Bernstein’s program is clinic-based only – and there are currently clinics in Canada and the USA.
What is the Bernstein Diet?
The Bernstein Diet aims to lose 4-5 pounds per week and involves 3 visits to the clinic each week during the program.
The Bernstein diet program is a combination of low calorie diet (regular grocery
store foods), behavior modification, education and vitamin and mineral supplements. The daily calorie intake could be anywhere between
800 — 1350 calories per day – it is a case-by-case situation.
The diet claims that only fat tissue is lost during this rapid weight loss phase, and all other tissue (muscle, electrolytes, fluid) is retained. One of the major features of the diet is the vitamin and mineral supplementation – this is achieved by vitamin injections.
Updated:Patients receive a Vitamin B complex injection.
Dr. Bernstein has a number of phases on the diet – a Weight Loss phase, a maintenance phase and also the “tune-up” diet for small amounts of weight loss.

Hi Samantha, Thank you for clarifying the two injections. Please let me know which one is more effective?
Hi everyone: This info we are all sharing is wonderful! I just wanted to clarify something about the B12 injections which the nurses have shared with me. The red injection is actually a combination of B6 and B12. If you look on the bottom of the “Program Information” sheet from Dr. B you see 2 DIN #’s. B6 – 02245215: B12 – 00521515. They won’t tell you of course what the combination of both are in the injection though. So if you go out and buy the Vitamin B12 injection: DIN # 00521515 you are not getting the B6 at all. I have asked the nurses alot of questions regarding the 2 shots (B-Comp and B12) because I couldn’t figure out why they would only give me the B-Comp injection, which is DIN # 00147680. More than just a few nurses all told me this information including 2 head nurses in 2 different clinics. They kept saying that patients like myself you have Fibromyalgia always get the B-Comp injection which seems to help us not ache as much. If wasn’t until after I restarted again last month that I finally was able to get the DIN # for the B-Comp injection which is the yellow one, which is the Neo-Bex. That DIN # is not on the Dr. Bernstein information program sheet though, which I’m not sure why. Anyway, I just wanted to share my knowledge with all of you. Cheers!
Im not sure if YOU all are aware that DR B diet has two different type of injections. The first kind is the one given to everyone which is the B12 injection…it looks RED in colour.
The other type of injection is the B complex injection which is given to women who are on their period because it helps with bloating and it also helps ease cramps..etc!
I have been a long time patient at the Yorkdale location and each time i was on my period I was given a double shot of the B complex injections!!
So therefore:
Din # 00147680 – Neobex is your B complex
Din # 00521515 – Cyanocobalamin is the B 12
The choice is really yours.
Personally i have not tried Din # 00521515 – Cyanocobalamin. But i did buy it yesterday and injected myself last night…i am doing the diet and eating less than 1000 calories per day.
I will let you know how much weight i lose in the next two days.
good luck all
Thank you everyone for all this great information! I have been at odds with joining DrB because of the cost! And now I really want to try this at home!
I do have a question on the Din #’s for the injections. There are two different Din #’s listed from separate posts and I’d appreciate clarification on which one would be best?
Din # 00147680 – Neobex
Din # 00521515 – Cyanocobalamin
Has anyone tried both or does anyone know which one is more effective?
I am so happy I stumbled across this website… all your information is really great!
I was on the Dr. B. Diet for the past 3 weeks and ended up in the emergency cause I wasn’t feeling to good and I am a very healty person with only 15 pounds to loose. I woke up this weekend (yesterday) with a weird feeling in my chest and tiggling in my arms. not knowing what was going on, I went to the emergency and with the electro-cardio gram that they did they found out that the electrodes (potassium and calium) were too low and caused the pain in my chest. The doctor urge me to stop the diet and eat healty and do a one hour walk, (rain or shine) every day and this will put me back on track. Let me tell you I got my lesson, if your heart fail because you do not provide it with the fuel needed then no diet is worth it.
OMG U GUYS R THE BESTTT THANKS FOR SHOWING ME THIS I JUST ORDERED MINE BUT DOES THE NEEDLES HURT OR ARE THEY JUST LIKE A REGULAR VACINE SHOT???
Destiny
Hi Connie, since you are a nurse…can you teach me how to do the injections. I could pay you for your time.
Lots to say.. been doing lots of research and want to share the info on to you guys.. hope this helps you..I have been doing the Dr B diet on and off for 3 years..I have lost and gained over that time period. The reason I would stop and start is because of the price. I wanted to start again but they told me i had to repay the consolation fee of over #300. So last month I decided I was going to do the diet without the injections, and i did lose 15-20lbs with just following the diet part. But then I hit a plateau for 2 weeks at 135 for the longest time (by the way I’m only 5 feet 0 so 135 is about 15 over weight for me) anyway.. I did some reading online, and found out some information about doing the injections myself.. I found out that the dr b injection is mainly b12 that’s why its red, the b-comp is yellow. They only give you that b-comp to get rid of water retention. I did some research on the differences between all the b vitamins, and the b12 gets your metabolism going and gives energy and helps rid of fat the best of all the b vitamins. The b-comp just helps you lose the bloating. Wednesday I started to inject myself, 1cc = 1ml on my hip well upper behind where the thigh connects…(lots of fat there) and today I’m down to 131.5. I also am taking potassium i have some left over from when I was going to dr b.. and I make sure that i eat my 2 servings of protein everyday. the b12 cost me less then $10 no prescription needed, and it has 10lm per vile. The bottle reads “Vitamin b12 Cyanocobalamin injection USP 1000mcg/ml,and the din is 00521515. I walked into the shoppers by my house and said I want some b12 for injection, with no prescription needed and its very cheap should last about 10 injections so 3 weeks if you do it three times a week (mon, wed, fri). the needles I bought are BD Ultra-fine 11 Insulin Syringe for U-100 insulin 1cc, 8mm, 30 Gauge needles. I am sooooooo scared of needles, but I held my breath and gave it to myself anyway.. and guess what IT DIDNT HURT… I couldn’t believe it, cause i remember getting hurt when going to dr b, I got bruised too sometimes. Anyway if you have any questions let me know my email is bridget@bellnet.ca.
I’m an RN and a girlfriend gave me the Dr. B diet manual. I know I could do it on my own, including the injections but I need the accountability.
I’ve been struggling with 15 pounds that I put on over the last 10 years and I just couldn’t do it on my own.
I know the accountability of weigh-in’s and 1 on 1 coaching will keep me on track.
Oh, you have to go to the pharmacist. They will need to do a special order, which only takes one day to arrive. I got my vitamin B injection but haven’t use it yet. I’m afraid of needles…hehehe
No prescription needed, you just pay for it. DIN #00147680. If you have a drug plan, and you want your insurance company to pay for it, then you are required for a prescription.
Jenny you said you can get it at any shoppers drug mart. But do you need a prescription? or can you just get it from the pharmacy?
Basically you can get it in any Shoppers drug mart. All you need to do is go to the pharmacist and order from them. Normally, they don’t have in stock, it only takes them about one day for them to order. You either give them the name of the drug, if they cannot find it in there system, give them the DIN #. All drugs have their own DIN # (Drug identication number.)
I buy my Neo-Bex from Weston and Lawrence Shoppers.
Call them and make sure this is available.
Most of the time this drug is on Back Logg
Hi Guys,
Just Trust me when I tell you that the medical receptionist at the DR BERNSTEIN YORKDALE location was selling the injections under the table. She No longer works there–i think they found out what she was up too and fired her because she no longer works there.
This receptionist told only a few close friends that went to the Yorkdale Clinic that they should stop wasting their money because they only thing they inject in you is the NEO-BEX !!!!!!!!
And she started to sell this under the table.
Once I got my hands on it, i took it to my Doctor and he confirmed that this was simply a mixture of Vitamen B and it would not harm you as its simply vitamens and this gets excreted through urine.
He gave me a prescription for the NEO-BEX but then I ran into ANOTHER problem…..ALL PHARMACIES in the Toronto area did not carry this drug…They always gave the excuse that the product was on BACK-LOGG…watever that ment!
Anyways after a few months I recieved it from Shoppers Drug Mart on Weston Rd and Lawrence.
Make sure you Call them and ask if this drug is available.
If you have a Drug Plan This will only cost you $19 per VIAL. I bought 10 Vials just to stock up in case the product went into back-log again or worse case scenario if they discontinue it.
Cheers
Hi everyone: I have just purchased the Neo-Bex today as well. I can tell you FOR SURE that this is the “B-Comp” that Dr. B uses at the clinic. I was a patient last year for 4 months and went because I have Fibromyalgia and understood that these injections help people with Fibromyalgia feel better. After a ton of research, and finally getting the DIN # from the clinic, I know that this Neo-Bex is exactly what I was receiving at the clinic. The single and doubles that others have referred to is the B6 and B12. You are right, there is no B12 in the Neo-Bex but that doesn’t matter, I still lost weight with the Vitamin B-Comp I was getting. I have 3 injections left at the clinic and then will learn how to inject myself. I can hardly wait!! I live in Calgary and my prescription today for the Neo-Bex was $77.61. Good luck to all! Cheers!!
I’ve called several Shoppers’ Drug Mart locations and they do not carry the NeoBex. Could someone tell me which location in Toronto he/she bought the NeoBex… is there another name for it? I called Dr B to schedule a tune up – if I can purchase this product myself then I can save a lot of money. Also someone mentioned getting these injection at health food stores… where?
HI JENNY,
I also purchased the Neobex and had the same question. There is no b12 and the injection is a yellow color whereas drb’s injection are red (probably its the b12). So will the neobex work?
Thanks
Hi, I purchased Neo-Bex from Shoppers Drug Mart yesterday, but I read the ingredients. It contained like B1, B2, B6, and others. But there is no B12. So would it be different from Dr. Bernstein injection. I’m afraid to inject into myself now.
Hi Samantha
Is the wieghtloss the same as dr.b’s when using the NeoBEx?
Thanks
You can inject this at home and it is safe. after-all, your doing the exact same thing they do at the clinic!!
They prick you in the BUTT, AB, OR THIGH.
Right into the fat tissue. NO Big Deal.
I buy 22cgm Needles and inject One ML on MON?WED/FRIDAYS. I also bought the Keto Kit where u test your unrine to determine if your body is using the fat to burn for fuel.
Its simple Really.
GOOD LUCK
Sorry, should of aimed the last comment at Samantha also
Aimed mainly for Serious ~I did the Dr.b diet a couple of years ago…i only did it for 3-4 months. I couldn’t afford their ‘maintenence” program,i was running low on cash. I finished loosing all the weight i wanted on my own in the following months, got down to 126! I had twins and put on over 100lbs! It’s tough to loose the “baby fat”. I kept it off for a year and then all of a sudden! Bam! I stated gaining again,no change in my eating or anything….i am soooo frustrated. Within 6 months i had put all the weight back on. I was going to go back again, but i can’t afford to keep doing this deit every 2-3 years! How silly would that be?! If i can get the NEO-BEX,i can inject it myslef? Or do i have to have a nurse or someone do it for me? I am pretty sure i’d have no problem grabbing the fat/skin on the belly and doin it! lol I just want to make sure that this is “safe” to do at home. Thanks!
Mike, Im so happy for you. Its wonderful to know that your at your happiest now!
Keep it up. And once you reach your goal, make sure you do the maintenance so that the pounds dont come back.
I personally think its really expensive and i couldnt keep up with the $600 dollar monthly payments. Thats why i do this at home- ill be honest its hard cause you dont have that extra motivation the clinic provides–but i will suck it up and do this.
Trisha,
The Injections CAN ONLY be prescribed bye your doctor. Go to a walk in clinic or something and tell them that your Vitamen B deficient and that you need a prescription for NEO-BEX B complex injectables. Dont even waste your time with any oral vitamen supplements–it does not absorb well– You must inject this!!
C’mon be creative and just find a way to get the prescription—besides its nothing Harmful–its only Vitamens so most doctors dont worry.
I get it all the time and inject myself at home.
Good Luck
I started Dr. B’s diet last week. My initial weigh in was 253 lbs. After one week, I weighed in at 239. This diet has given me the motivation to do the following important things:
-STOP DRINKING ALCOHOL
-STOP EATING JUNK (McDonalds, KFC etc)
-DRINK LOTS OF WATER
I am 32 years old and haven’t felt this good in almost 10 years. I have tons of energy, my complexion is shining and my confidence is increasing. I have started a exercise routine to supplement the diet (specifically for after I reach 200 lbs) and really enjoy the exercising because I know I will lose the weight. I will look into doing the injections myself in the future, but I use the clinic visits as a motivation to not cheat.
Well, I am currently on this diet. However, I am taking some time off, and I am seeing the same results when I was taking the shots. It’s too damn expensive, and if you don’t meet their 4-5lb a week goal take keep dropping your calories by takiing away your fruits and bread. Sometimes you can be down to 300 calories per day, NOT HEALTHY. There is nothing to it. Here are the basic rules: 2 serving proteins(3.5 oz each serving), 2 serving vegetables from list 8oz each serving, 2 midium fruits including apples, oranges, 5oz raspberries or blackberries, etc.(no grapes, bananas, mangoes), 2 bread substitute 1/2 slice of bread =1 serving. There is also a miscelaneous catogory 2 servings which includes sugar free gums, sugar free jam, etc. Each day in the morning to take 1 multivitamin (Swiss One 50, and 2 potassium pills daily morning and noon. Truth be told since I started the diet I never followed it exact and saw the expected result. E.g. I always had 2 slice of weight watchers bread(they forbid you from using WW products), 4.5oz of protein twice a day; 2 large apples OR oranges; 10oz vegetables each serving. And, if they took away my fruits I will just have 2 small fruits instead. just remember: KNOW YOUR BODY and if you feel weak put something healthy in your body like a salad or a fruit. Hope this helps.
I cannot get NEOBEX here in BC without a prescription. I got Vit B12 over the counter in injection form but they did not have B6 (Costco) – so I don’t know how much of the B12 to inject and should I just take the B6 orally. I have already done the Dr. B diet and lost 15 lbs. in 2 weeks, but I don’t want to continue paying over $160 for maintenance and shots when I can possibly do this myself.
You follow the same as what they do in the clinic. You need to buy needles from the pharmacist. Make sure the needles can hold 1 ml of product cause thats how much you need to take Mon/Wed/Fri. I inject this myself in my abdomen where there is FAT. This needs to be injected in the fat. Make sure you eat the things that are allowed on DR B. Drink 8 glasses of water per day and take your potassium tablets. 2 in the morning and take another two exactly four hours later.
you will be constantly running to the bathroom to flush the fat…it feels good!
Good luck and remember to stay motivated.
I was on this diet for a few months, and the great thing about it is that you start to see results immediately and you drop the weight fairly quickly.
However…
The caloric intake every day is not something that you can continue long term. It is not realistic to eat such small amounts of only very specific things.
After being on the diet for a few months, I was losing a lot of weight, but the weight I was losing was not only fat, it was muscle. I began to feel tired all the time, I was always freezing cold, and I was very weak and noticed that my hair was thinning significantly due to the complete lack of iron in the diet.
I also found that in the clinic I was going to, the nurses were extremely rude and looked down on you if you weren’t losing at a fast enough rate. This diet is over-priced and dangerous long term.
If you want to go on this diet, I would only recommend it short term, as you can get the same injections done at a fraction of the price at a lot of different health food locations.
I have managed to keep the weight off while not being on the diet and eating twice as much food. Not to mention my hair started thickening and I wasn’t constantly tired and weak anymore.
I would never do that diet again.
Hi Samantha
how much neobex do i use and how many times a week do i inject?
