Bernstein Diet

bernstein-dietDr. Stanley Bernstein is a Canadian physician who specializes in medically-supervised weight loss programs. Dr Bernstein’s weight loss practice began in 1974 – and has now grown to over 50 clinics in Canada alone. Dr. Bernstein’s program is clinic-based only – and there are currently clinics in Canada and the USA.

What is the Bernstein Diet?

The Bernstein Diet aims to lose 4-5 pounds per week and involves 3 visits to the clinic each week during the program.
The Bernstein diet program is a combination of low calorie diet (regular grocery
store foods), behavior modification, education and vitamin and mineral supplements. The daily calorie intake could be anywhere between
800 — 1350 calories per day – it is a case-by-case situation.

The diet claims that only fat tissue is lost during this rapid weight loss phase, and all other tissue (muscle, electrolytes, fluid) is retained. One of the major features of the diet is the vitamin and mineral supplementation – this is achieved by vitamin injections.
Updated:Patients receive a Vitamin B complex injection.

Dr. Bernstein has a number of phases on the diet – a Weight Loss phase, a maintenance phase and also the “tune-up” diet for small amounts of weight loss.

  • For Jiggy…

    Hi Jiggy,

    I called the Shoppers at York Mills and Leslie (808 York Mills Rd) for you. When requesting the injectable, ask for Pyridoxine HCl (Hydrochloric Acid). That’s the trade name. If you ask for a B6 injectable serum, they may have trouble finding it.

    Spoke with a team member in the Pharmacy at Leslie and York Mills. He told me that they do carry it. It will take about one business day to arrive at the store and is $50-$60 per vial. Again when calling in, ask for Pyridoxine HCl.

    Hope this helps and good luck!

    Trish :)

  • Hi Phatchic and Everyone too,

    It’s soooo weird, but I don’t get to see everyone’s posts right away … for instance, I didn’t see your reply Phatchic about the bruising when I posted where people can get the Vit B6 and 12 stuff … maybe that’s cause the page was cached on my computer.

    Anyway … thanks for the feedback about the bruise Phatchic. My bruise is humongous … and I think you’re right that it will just take time to go away.

    Oh, I had a weigh in the other day … in four weeks, I lost 11.2 pounds! Right on schedule according to the doctor! I think in a couple of weeks, as I still have a few more pounds to go, and then I’ll be on maintenance.

    So does anyone know much about the maintainance component of this diet? I would sure love it if some info on this maintenance portion could be shared. I’m still trying to decide whether I should keep with the clinic to do the maintenance or just do it on my own. What do you all think?

    BTW, NEO-BEX is a vitamine B complex injection … at least that is from what I’ve read from the postings here.

    Cheers!

  • just doing the math …

    Vitamin B12 injectable
    Din # 00521515 Cyanocobalamin
    1000 mcg/mL
    $5 for 10 mL vial

    Neo-Bex Injectable (Vitamin B Complex)
    Din # 00147680
    $55 for 10 mL vial

    Every second day, I administer 0.4 mL Neo-Bex plus 0.4 mL Vitamin B12 in separate syringes using ‘27 G 1/2’ needles / 1 mL syringes (.50 each x 2 per day)

    At this dosage, a 10 mL vial will provide 25 injections

    Total cost of 25 injections ($5 (B12) + $55 (Neo-Bex) + $25 (needles/syringes) = $85)

    Total cost per injection – $3.40 !!!

    Adjust for sales tax on vitamins – no sales tax on needles/syringes

  • Hi All,

    Just curious to know why some inject Neo-Bex and other inject B6? I saw my naturopath today and he said that for the break down of fat it is B6…

    I am using a pretty short needle probably 1/2 inch and use .35 B6 and .35 B12 = .70cc. I’ve lost 5 pounds since Saturday so I think i’ve got the right dosage. =)

  • Hi Dishearted !!
    you are right it takes a bit before the posts come up I believe they get reviewed first then posted I am sure it is a safety thing which is good. Any whooo sounds like you are doing good on this diet congrats. And yes that humungous bruise will go in time, like I said I did the same and I am a nurse !!! go figure !
    Neobex is a complex b vitamin (it is actually a B1 to B6) so if you are taking neobex DO NOT take the B6 as well, it is neobex OR B6 not both.You will be getting too much B6 (for those that are reading this too) Dishearted I do have the maintenance booklet here so let me know when you are ready and we will figure out how to get it to you ok ?? I am down 11 lbs as well but want to go down some more after all short season is on its way not to mention bathing suits LOL !! Talk to you soon :)

    It usually takes about a week before you don’t always feel hungry. If you feel you need that little something to fill the void try having 1 cup of jello lite, but it is considered 1/2 of a serving of fruit (if you are following this to a T )but only take 1 cup per day. If it is in the evening you are feeling hungry then save it til the end of your day. Believe me you will get past that feeling soon, its just we are used to eating tooooo much and now we aren’t any more. The B vitamins really do help With that. I hope this helps you out.

  • Lots2lose Dr. Bernstein either recommends Cal-K or if you have problems with it like I did then he recommends Micro-K. I got it from my local pharmacy. By the way I know it isn’t a month yet but I’ve lost close to 15lbs on my own!

    by Sara on 3/19/10
  • If you are too scared to give yourself the injection, I can do it. Just bring the syringe and b6/b12.

    I am not a practitioner — just willing to help.

    I’m in BC – Richmond. I was given a teaching lesson by my naturopath! I give myself, sister and mom injections 3 x a week. It’s really simple!

    Email me if you want.

  • Hey everyone

    i really enjoyed ur previous posts. I need to lose some weight. Ive been on the Bernstein diet before and i did well on it. I was 210 lbs and went down to 145…but slowly the weight is coming back on. I’m now 173lbs.

    Now i already have a prescription for Neobex but every pharmacy Ive gone too us telling me that its been on back order since October 2009!! Has anyone experienced this??? Is there a substitute for Neobex??? Please help as i really want to get the ball rolling

    Thanks
    Needs to lose some

  • I bought Neobex online. It came in about 3 days – because it’s delivered within Canada, I didn’t need a prescription.

    by sandra on 3/21/10
  • Thanks Trish I got the vitamin b6 from York Mills and Leslie. I’m starting the injections tomorrow. :)

    by Jiggy on 3/21/10
  • My husband started with me 3 days ago and has lost 8lbs!!!!!!!!!!!! UNFAIR :)

    by sandra on 3/22/10
  • Hi Phatchic and everyone,

    Congrats on loosing 11 pounds Phatchic!!! Thanks for the feedback also! BTW, I got the Dr. Bernstein maintenance booklet the other day from the clinic. Thanks for the offer though! At the current rate of weight loss, I think I can begin the actual maintenance part of the program on April 1. I can’t wait until I can actually eat a whole egg!!!

    And Monica … in the meantime … if I am hungry (which I do get from time to time) I drink water and lots of it! The nurses at the Dr. B clinic also said that if I was really hungry, then I can eat one serving of Tofu Shirataki Noodle Shaped Tofu – (4 oz per day max). I’ve only done that once … I didn’t really like the taste of it. So for those who are hungry, drink a glass or two of water!!!

  • Hi!

    I was in the dr b diet before as well and lost 40 lbs, but that was four years ago and now im back up. From the posts, it seems that a few are doing it at home on their own. Can you tell me where you can get the vials from in Edmonton… also do you need a doctor’s prescription for it?

    Thanks

  • Hi, To keena890 or anyone else that may help. I tried this diet a few month ago but it was just too expensive to keep up with. I was loosing the weight only combine with working out. Anyhow, I want to get started on my own. I have purchased the ketosis testing strips already. I also have the multivitamins. I used to get a prescription for Potassium (Micro-K I believe – the pale orange pills) from Dr B. Can this be bought off the counter? Also I live in Canada, so if I walk into a Shoppers Drugmart, will the pharmacist allow me to buy all these syringes and injectible vitamin B and Neo-Bex withought any concern? Would I have to explain why I need them? If yes, will they give me the 27 G 1/2 syringe needles if I specify for it and will they order me a 100 box rather then keeping buying a few at a time. Please let me know before I go and have the pharmacist givin me ‘that look’. Can’t wait until I start! I did start on the weekend following just the food diet and I’m just taking the vitamin B tablets for now.

  • Hi I found it was easier to get the stuff from Loblaws/Superstore….had problems at Shoppers Drug Mart and Wal-mart. Heard others say Costco was good I don’t know. Now a question for you I have used the small insulin needles the ones you mention are they the size they use at the clinic. I have the supplies here but have not started….I keep saying tomorrow. That is why I like going to the clinic I get on track real fast……but it’s so expenive. Keep me posted how you are doing.

    by Angel on 3/25/10
  • Hi as for the bruises….I use to get them all the time going tho Dr.B after the shot push on the spot for a few minutes sometimes help.

    by Angel on 3/25/10
  • I used http://www.Canadadrugsonline. They had the lowest price and it less than a week to arrive! They might ask you to fax them your prescription – just remind them that you are in Canada. They are very friendly. You can get B12 almost anywhere – same with K-Lyte, although my pharmacy had to order it for me. My husband can get away with using Potassium in pill form. He is taking K-Dur. The pills have 20mg versus 25 for K-Lyte (and WAY cheaper!).

    I have lost 6 lbs. this week. To avoid bruising: apply pressure (with 2 of your fingers) around the area you are going to inject and make sure to go straight in and not on an angle.
    Hope that helps.

  • I wrote a few days go about not being sure where to get certain things from. I’m happy to say problem is solved. My dr wrote me a prescription for everything and my insurance company covered it all except for the micro k pills (which wasn’t that expensive anyways) and most probably the syringes. Although they had to order them for me. I should be officially starting on monday :)

    by Smiley on 3/25/10
  • Doing Dr. B since Feb lost +++lbs. Can’t stand the cost knowing how cheap it is to buy on your own….So if the b12 comes in 1000mcg/ml what dosage do we use for the b6? I saw it on line in 100 or 1000mcg/ml which one do I get?

    by wanabskinny on 3/26/10
  • Hi Sandra,

    Thanks for your reply. Could you tell me the website in which you ordered the Neobex from??

  • So i have officially started to follow the diet at home again I had joined the clinic March 2, 2009 and lost 95 lbs by august 09 since than i have put on about 20 lbs so i have decided to get back strict but doing it from home. I have purchased everything that i need my question is im a little confused on the dose. My needle is 100cc so am i doing 50 cc of B6 and B12 or am i doing 35 / 35 ???? I don’t want to take to much but at the same time i don’t want to take to little. Another question i have is about the ketostix is everyone that is following this diet burning ??? Bc I find it very hard to get to that stage however i successfully lost 95 lbs without being in that ketostix stage? I appreciated everyone’s input :)

    Start Monday March 29.2010 @ 177lbs lets see what Wednesdays weigh in will bring me :)

  • I’ve red 95% of the posts on this diet and I decided to document all that you need to know and where to buy and how much it cost in this one post.

    Background: I did the Dr. B diet few years ago. Folks, there’s no doubt about it; if you stick to the steps you will lose weight.

    *** The reality of the program;

    *** If you do it at the clinic, you will pay $315.65 for Initial Consultation and then $600 per month for 24 Shots + $35 vitamin bills = $635 ever month.

    1. One B6: 02245215 — 3000 mcg / 30ml = $37 (If you cant get it, get NeoBex: 00147680 price is about $45) (Rexall & DIA Pharmacy)
    2. One B12: 00521515 — 1000 mcg / 10ml = $7.95 (Rexall)
    3. Thirty BD Ultra-fine II Insulin Syringe for U-100 insulin 1cc, 8mm, 30 Gauge needles (Will last for 2 and one half months) = $8.97 (Rexall & DIA Pharmacy)
    4. One Ketostix (Regent Strips Urinalyis) DIN:2880U for urine test to check fat-burning level (Comes with 50 sticks will last for 4 months) =$8.59 (Rexall & DIA Pharmacy)
    5. One APO-K (DIN 00602884) – 600mg for potassium (1 per day) (100 Tablets will last you for 3 months) = $12.99 (Rexall & DIA Pharmacy)
    6. One Swiss “Swiss One” 50 Multi-Vitamins and Minerals. (2 per day) (72 Tablets will last you for 1 month) = $21.99 (Rexall & DIA Pharmacy)
    7. One BD Alcohol Swabs (100 swabs will last you for 8 months) = $2.39 (Rexall & DIA Pharmacy)

    *** Cost for the above 7 items = $99.88 + 13% Tax = $112.87

    *** If you do it at home, you will pay $52.55 + 13% Tax = $59.30 a month. ($0.30 BD Alcohol Swabs + $21.99 swiss one + $4.33 APO-K + $2.15 Ketostix + $3.50 needles + $7.98 B12 + $12.30 B6)

    (Rexall & DIA Pharmacy) 1015 Golflinks road, Ancaster, Ontario (905) 304. 8833
    (Rexall) Stone church Rd and Upper Paradise Rd, Hamilton, Ontario (In Plaza)

    *** The program and the shots;

    Each injection will require .35cc of B6 + .35cc of B12 = .70cc – mix in same needle – Don’t mess around and increase the dosage, stick to these measurements and shoot 3 times a week, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and don’t cheat; stick to the program.

    *** Motivate yourself;

    Change your eating habits and adopt sensible meal portions. Always check yourself in the mirror; it will help you stick to the program. Go to department stores each week you shed lbs and try one smaller size cloths. Continue the program and go and try the same cloth on again, it will motivate you in achieving your short and long term goals.

    *** What is cc? cc stands for cubic centimeter.

    The B6 30ml vial will give you 75 shots. (3 month supply)
    The B12 10m lvial will give you 25 shots. (1 month supplly)

    *** The Injection process;

    1. Mix .35cc of B6 + .35cc of B12 in same needle;
    2. Get all the air out from needle first;
    3. Wipe area with 1 BD Alcohol Swab;
    4. Inject below the bellybutton” to the right or left;
    5. Dispose the needle in safe manners. If you collect used ones, you can return to any pharmacy, they will dispose of it for free.

    The B6 only thing that had to be ordered. Takes 1 day.

    Food list for Canada can be downloaded from here:
    http://rapidshare.com/files/337201479/CanadaFoolList.zip

    *** I’m starting my diet this Wednesday.

    My food intake for 1 day will be;

    A) 300 grams of Protein; Choices of chicken, steak, fish, tuna, shrimp, turkey, fat-free cold cuts, fat-free cheese, .. etc. (Spread over 3 meals)
    B) 300 grams of Vegetable. (Can go as high as 500 if needed). (Spread over 2 meals)
    C) 2 Fruit – Orange, apple, or grapefruit.
    D) 8 full size cups of COLD WATER (Body needs to burn fat to warm water in take). (Anything diet and sugar and acid free is good.)
    E) Sleep 8 hours a day; Sleep less and you will not burn fat. You gain weight if you don’t sleep.

    THE BOTTOM LINE IS PAY Dr. Bernstein $630 a month or spend $711.60 for one year by doing it at home! SAVE $6848.40 dollars. Spend that money on new cloth and even a trip for the new you!

    Hope this post helps you. Wish me Luck.

    why are you taking in 300 grams of protein a day???? That is an incredible amount for someone to take in on a daily basis. I am very interested to know why so much? And what is the caloric value of your day?
