Acne Diet
Acne (pimples) has some relationship with nutrition, however there is little credible research providing links between certain food groups and acne. As an acne sufferer it is a process of trial and error. However there are some guidelines that may be useful.
Foods to Avoid
Foods with saturated fats and trans fats can contribute to oily skin. Saturated fats are found in most animal products – such as meats, dairy, and poultry. However the body does still require other essential fatty acids – such as from fish, flaxseed or hempseed oil.
Some believe that a high calorie intake (i.e. eating too much) can lead to increased hormone levels, and subsequently more ‘break-outs’ – but this is unproven.
What about chocolates and candy?
Many believe there is a direct relationship between eating chocolate and increased acne. However this is unproven – although chocolate does have a high proportion of saturated fats.
Foods to Try
A higher protein intake may assist in acne control. This may be to do with the decreased production of a certain enzyme that can cause more oil production, and increased clogging of pores. A diet with 60-70% carbohydrates may be too high in carbs.
Acne Treatments & Vitamins
Some people have found that Vitamin A and Zinc have helped with acne. In addition Green Tea could also be incorporated into the diet (as it leads to a decrease in androgen production).
High levels of iodine in the diet does impact some acne sufferers – by causing new outbreaks of acne lesions. Note that very salty (iodized salt) foods such as chips etc, contain high levels of iodine and should be avoided.

I’m 16 and i have suffered form acne since i was about 11 or 12. however, i have stopped eating all meat products and lowered my intake of dairy products. my skin has been clear since i have been on this vegetarian diet. but i do still suffer from the occasional pimple on mii cheek once in a while. i guess its from eating the dairy. i would advise any acne sufferer to try a vegetarian diet or better yet a vegan diet and watch your acne clear up.
proactive does work but i have just started to change my diet. i hope and pray it makes my skin better. acne kills the person in you. before i had it i used to go to parties have a social life. girls used to think i was cute. but now i really have no reason to live accept for my athletic career . but always have faith in the lord he will help you threw.
Hi,
I’m 29 years old and have also struggled with acne for around 16 years. What has helped my skin tremendously is the ‘Paula’s choice’ range.
I use the normalizing cleaner am/pm, the 2% BHA lotion am/pm and the acne fighting treatment pm. The acne treatment is the only benzyl peroxide treatment that has not made my skin peel, and since starting this regime my skin has cleared up amazingly. Her products are awesome!
I have had acne for years- and suffered through every bit of it. I have finally found something that works for me. Here is my mish-mosh of skin care-
1. Neutrogena foaming cleanser (gets off all the makeup)- 2 times a day
2. St. Ives Apricot scrub (blemish & blackhead remover)- 1 time per day- exfoliate well- you need to get rid of dead skin cells
3. Isopropyl alcohol.. from drug store- kills all bacteria, rub on with cotton ball- 2 times a day after washing
4. A light, oil free lotion (I’m using Proactiv lotion right now)
5. If you have a bad pimple- use tea tree oil because it is anti-bacterial and natural
PLEASE let me know if this regimen works for anyone <3
nay lin eating right food is not at all solution for acne. it causes due to harmons imbalance, it has many reasons. ppl suffer lot, better to consult dermitologist
Im 12 years old and I have had acne for 2 years. All of my friends would tease me all the time and call me names such as Pizza Face or Pimple face. And inside I just felt like crying. I tryed Clean and Clear, Proaciv, Jhonson and Jhonson, Neutragena, and some times go to a drematolgiest and they would give me Epoduo and all of thoes product would make my face super dry or super oily. I have very oily skin which I think isnt good for the acne. I have it mostly on my cheek bones under the eyearea, beside the eye area, forehead, chin, cheast, nose, and back. I just hope some day they would come out for a cure for the bad acne I have and make it all go away.
Please help me.
im 14 and my mom is trying to get me to use all of this different stuff to try to cure my skin. im not very good about keeping up a routine but im getting better and am trying, but things seem to be getting worse. even boys in my grade have commented and its not helping my self esteem. im trying this arbonne stuff as soon as it gets here and i hope it works, i have had many agency’s tell me that i have a great face and body and that my acne is holding me back. i just wish it would end, but there is no end it sight, im going to change my diet starting now and just try not to worry about it.
Alright guys here is my story,
All my life I’ve had pretty good skin. When I hit puberty It changed a bit. I got a couple of pimples and I started to freak out. I probably did the worst thing possible and I began to scrub my face. I also began wearing make up which made it even worst. I’m telling you the best thing you can do is leave your skin alone, eat healthy foods, and stop worrying about it. Honestly guys I bet half the breakouts you have is from worrying and scrubbing you face. Drink a lot of water, wash your face with aveeno oatmeal soap (ONCE A DAY!!!), and take omega 3 fish pills. Stop using all these harsh products. It only makes its worse. Find you identity in Christ, not the pimple on your forehead. I look back and I wish I had never started to scrub my face 3 or 4 times a day. If I hadn’t I’m almost positive that my face would never had broken out as bad as it did in one certain place. Right now I’m in repair mode and after one nights sleep and not scrubbing my face in the morning I’ve already seen results. So….
1. Only wash you face one time a day with a gentle soap
2. Make healthy choices in your diet.
3. Take omega 3 fish pills (they are amazing)
4. Ask God to take the weight of having acne off you shoulders. Ask him to be with you when your feeling low. He will take all of you self consciousness away. I promise!!!!!!!
Hi, I am 34 and I have had troubled skin, with mild to moderate acne since I was 14 or so. Sometimes it is worse than others, and it seems to be hormone related. 2 years ago I started taking Cod Liver Oil because I was nursing and wanted to pass on the Omega 3′s to my baby. During this time I also changed my diet, by eliminating vegetable oils like corn oil and canola oil, and started using and cooking with real butter and coconut oil, olive oil and sometimes peanut oil. Several months later I noticed that my skin looked better than ever. Not only was the acne almost non-existent, but my skin looked younger than before, especially around my eyes, even though I had not been using my eye cream. My skin was not as oily as usual.
Now I am thinking about cutting my carb intake as well. I have always had a sweet tooth. Now there is research that shows that acne may be directly related to an excess of carbohydrates, especially simple carbs. Acne is also related to insulin resistance–just look it up. Sometimes it even results in PCOS for women.
I would advise everyone with severe acne to research insulin resistance and consider trying a very low carb diet. Also be sure to include good fats like cod liver oil (at least a tablespoon per day), saturated fat from grassfed animals, like lamb and grassfed cows, and butter. Stay away from vegetable oils–these are not natural and humans were not designed to eat them. These are the oils that cause atherosclerosis. I am also starting to drink spearmint tea, which can lower androgen levels and balance my hormones, to keep acne from developing.
Acne is a disease of modern living, it is not normal! We do not have to accept it. We all deserve to know the truth and make the choice to eat foods that keep us and our skin healthy!
Best wishes to all of us.
I had suffer from acne since I was 10. I tried everything even changing my diet. I stop eating chocolate and drinking soft drinks. It seem to work a little bit,but I still had break outs. Over the counter meds did nothing, but made it worse. I had a prescription once from a family doctor that worked, but the acne came back full force and twice as worse. Don’t even ask me about Proactiv. It wasn’t until 2 years ago that I when to a dermatologist and a OB-GYN and the combination of medications finally worked!! Some times changing what you eat isn’t a option for everyone.
Devone. don’t let acne control you! you should control it! you have one life to live, when you’re an old man you will regret not enjoying your young years.
i would like to tell u solution for acne that is drink as much as water u can that is called water therapy. avoid sweets and use sotret tablets for 6 months eat fruits like oranges avoid oily, fatty foods, and cool drinks, keep your stomach clean.
i am 14 years old and since i was 11 i have had acne problems and they just get worse and worse i need help i have tried going to the doctors millions of times and all i get is something that i have tried dozens and dozens of times over and over again. i also have exema which is a dry skin problem that i cant use achohols dies fragrances so it makes it vary hard to find something to work for my skin. i have tried proactive before any ways and it still didnt work iv been put on birthcontrol to help my acne i have been put on almost anything i can think of until i recently heard from my friends that acne can be caused by the way you eat and what you eat. so i have even looked up ways to eat that is healthy for your skin. i think i have tried absolutly everything and nothing seems to work i just dont know what to do and i dont want to go through my teenage years and possibly my adulthood worrying about my skin and my acne i want to be able to go in public without worrying about what my face looks like and i am so tired of feeling ugly and wanting to hide be of the way it looks acne makes you not only want to hide your face but it makes me want to hide completely its embaracing and i just want to be able to shine and have clear skin. i really do need help…
I am 31 years old and I have struggled with bad acne all my life. I know how horrible it is to just feel ugly and unloveable. This is the first time I have been acne free! I tried every product and medicine from pro-active to accutane nothing really worked. I recently read the book “Why we get fat and what to do about it”. It basically says to eat meats and veggies. Flour, sugar, potatoes, rice, corn are not good for you. It also explains why eating fat is good and important. Well I started eating this way in order to lose weight and after about 2 weeks my skin started clearing up. Now it’s been over a month since I had even one pimple. The diet was hard at first but now it’s totally worth it!
Can try changing your diet. Dairy, wheat and processed foods are often acne triggers for people. Eat mostly meat and veggies. I had a lot of success when I stopped drinking diet pop. Apparently my body could not process the aspartame in artificial sweeteners. Exercise will help your skin, too. Plus it gives you confidence and improves your mood. You just need to stick with it.
Just eat the right food for your acne. Avoid eating sweet. Sweet can produces oil. You can not get rid of acne from your life by treatments. Here is one thing you can do, that is eat the right food and be patient. Your life is going to be great. I hope it helps some.
I’m nearly 30 and have had severe acne since I was 17. It is an emotionally draining problem to have. When I first got acne it was bad especially on my forehead, right cheek and chin. As a teen you don’t know much about it and tend to rely on doctors recommendations. I tried everything over the counter and nothing worked, I eventually ended up on the yasmin pill for 4 years which was such a gift to my skin as it cleared everything up. However 1 year ago I noticed my hair was seriously falling out and I had put on alot of weight so I stopped taking the pill. I think deep down I knew my acne was going to come back so I had to prepare myself for a battle. As I came off the pill I replaced it with Zinc, Biotin and Cod liver oil supplements of high dosage, I’ve cut caffine out completely from my life and absolutely anything with dairy and meat. As for products I use dermalogica. My skin still breaks out from time to time, more especially when I’m due on, however one thing apart from all this changes in consumption and skincare routine which I’ve changed since my teens which had helped me through my battle with eliminating this problem forever is not to stress entirely over it and do not let it depress you and there is a science to it because the more you stress the more acne you get. Tell your spots you love them and care about them and try to divert your stress on something that is more beneficial to your life and ask for healing from God and beleive me you can fight this battle too. As weird as it sounds try to see your acne as a blessing in your life and not a burden and it will disappear.
Im 20years old an have had acne for the past 4years. the scars are begining to leave there mark an i just dont know what to do anymore. ive tried every over the counter method and antibiotics with no luck. im very ify with modern meds becuz i seem to feel the effects more than others. im currently on birth control hopeing it will level my hormons an improve my acne but it only seems to get slightly better to only turn around and get worse. i went to see a derm an the only help they offered was accutan. this drug seriously scares me but i fear its the only way to make my acne go away… i wont do lazer treatmeants to painful an results arent always good. diet is hard for me i can stick to something for alil while but then stop paying attention an forget about it completely. my diet isnt horrible i love veggies an fruit an hole grains. so where do i turn now? this issue haunts me everyday and im getting more an more depressed i dont socialize anymore an i hate being around ppl i feel like all they see is my skin. someone help

I began as just not eating junk foods and sweets but now i dont eat at all. I have lost 10 pounds in 2 weeks and look horrible. I really just hate myself and wish i could just live a normal teenage life. I feel horrible and feel sick but yet i cant force myself to eat greasy or fatty stuff. I too have used every single acne treatment that I’ve been able to get my hands on. It got really bad around a year and a half ago and now nothing seems to work. All the dermatologists I’ve seen tell me the same things over and over again. Anyone know what the strongest medicine for acne is? Cause I’ve noticed that it sure isn’t patience.
To mikayla
Just try to avoid oily foods and dairy products to make ur skin acne free. Try to have only green vegetables, fruits, and juices in ur diet and be punctual with ur timings of diet. Use himalaya face wash, make a paste of sandalwood and rosewater and apply it over ur face for whole night and wash it next morning with cold water. Have a blood purifier. It will take 2 months. Use wet tissues inspite of hankeys. Have patience and follow these instructions u will get the results. And use a Suncros gel by ranbaxy before going outside
its hard for me to get rid of acne for a period of time i get it really bad and the only thing that seams to help is natural stuff im alergic to Benzoil Peroxdide and i can use only light Sylic acid in products everything i seam to use makes it worse Vasilean is the only thing that seams to work GREAT for me .
i m 18 and i m suffering frm acne from last 2 years i have tried unlimited products.i have tried homepathy, alopathy, medical but non of them work.now i have started ayurvedic.let see whether it works
Mikayla, I am so sorry to hear that you’re experiencing the pain and suffering that come with acne at such an early age. I know from experience how difficult it is to live life normally with acne. Nobody truly understand until they have it themselves. First of all, you need to know that you are beautiful no matter what skin condition you have. God made you and everything about you for a particular reason that you will come to understand one day. I myself battle acne and suffer the pain, but know that God will somehow, one day, show me the purpose in it. You just have to live day by day, second by second. It WILL pass. My skin has had the best of luck using B5, or pantothenic acid. Do some searches online yourself. Over time it will do wonders for your skin. Again, I am sorry to hear that you have to deal with this at a young age, but look foward to the near future when you have a clear complexion. The people you see everyday now won’t even be apart of your daily life, and if they are, they won’t remember your acne.
I am 30 years of age and have tried too many products that offered a pimple free face. I too have been to several dermatologists but none really works out. Sometimes my face will be okay but pimples will come back after some time. I did some research and found out about Retin A which I am using now for past one month now. I like the result. My face began to clear up. I still have marks but some are fading already. My pores are smaller and my skin is softer. They said result can be fully achieve from months of usage… maybe 3 months or more. So you really have to be patient in using this. Also, there will be initial breakouts (which happened to me) but for the sake of long term clear skin benefit… I really have been and still am so patient to achieving clear face. Do some browsing online about Retin A and reviews about it so that you will have the idea of what it can give you.
south african brand proyouth naturals has a acne serum that heals in 3days period
Please check all the research you can on Roaccutane, your diet has to change too. My son age 16 started it and soon stopped due to personality changes, he too prefers to the slow healing of acne versus the hiddious side affect possible from the drug. The research says it all and I believe the main ingredient is what is used for Chemotherapy thats why the sebacus glands close and you don;t produce sweat/oil. Others say tremendous results, the long term risks well I’m not sure. My son is now taking a Herbal medicine – Herbs of Gold, swimming in the sea and changed his diet dramatically. Log onto you tube and there is a young university student who wrote a book call Death of Acne, what he says is really interesting..Good Luck with it all
Vitamin B5(5 grams/day) + L-Cysteine + L-Carnitine + Vitamins A,E,D3 + Zinc Picolinate + Green Tea (with black pepper to boost it’s effect 4+ times) = clear in 2 days. Period.
I am only fourteen years old, and I have been crying out for help for the past five years. I need help, something that will cure my acne once and for all. I havev taken endlessly trips to the doctors, and you hear the same thing everytime, wash your fae with warm and cold water. I’ve tried everything, birth control pills, over the counter prescription drugs, pills, lotions, creams, ProActiv, Clean & Clear, St. Ives, Clearasil, Avon everything pimple healing medicine I could get my hands on. I need something that will give me visible results, FAST. Something that will boost my self esteem, and confidence, something that will make me not run to the bathroom fifteen times in a school day to see if my face is okay. Also to see a difference. I need help, I can’t go my whole life with worrying about what I look like all the time.
Roaccutate. works very well, in tablet form. i used it, unbelevably awsome. use it. go to gp, get a referal, then go to your local derma
