A blood type diet is a nutrition plan based around your blood type. This kind of diet became popular with the release of Peter D’Adamo’s book Eat Right 4 Your Type. The book continues to be a bestseller. D’Adamo claims that the diet will not only bring about weight loss — but can assist with allergy and infection resistance, and will achieve overall good health.
Most of the population has blood type O. Here the prescribed diet is low-carbohydrate, high in proteins (such as meat and fish), and low in dairy products. The author suggests specific foods to avoid; such as avocados, brazil nuts, and oranges. Type O should also engage in lots of exercise.
Blood Type A should avoid red meat, eat plenty of fish and vegetables, with a low dairy intake. Light exercise only.
Blood Type B should avoid chicken and bacon, eat plenty of meat and dairy, some fish, and plenty of fruit and vegetables.
Blood Type AB combines the A and B diets.
The author claims that much of the recommendations are based on scientific evidence - but perhaps it is too early to make this claim. Metabolism and/or sugar/insulin sensitivity are probably key factors in deciding diet - not blood type. Two people can have very different metabolisms and have the same blood type. One could be sensitive to carbohydrates or sugar, whilst the other needs a high carbohydrate diet.
Weight loss and other health improvements may occur on this diet - not so much because of blood type combinations, but because of a healthier diet! The author encourages people to cut down on processed and refined foods. Good advice for anyone regardless of blood type.
The book also includes low calorie diets that will probably bring about weight loss in anyone (once again, regardless of blood type).

Any diet containing a long list of banned foods can be difficult to follow. Eat Right 4 Your Type and the various blood type diets included encourage a predominantly meat and fish diet, while grains, potatoes, cereals, breads, pasta are not encouraged. Interestingly, certain vegetables and fruits are also banned.

I am having a bit of trouble swallowing this - i am type A and love my meat and to be told to basically not to eat red meat I can quite confidentally say will be near impossible for me. I believe that weight loss simply comes down to moderation and excercise and I am also an advocate for calorie intact control. Anyway, if “eating right for your blood type” is true, I wish I was born in the O group.

I am AB… I’ve been doing this diet for 3 months now. It’s fantastic. I feel a ton better, I have more energy, I’ve lost 15 lbs… This is no longer a ‘diet’ for me, it’s become a lifestyle.
Has anyone thought that by ‘following’ these diets they’re actually just becoming more aware of what they eat, are eating less junkfood and suddenly find miraculous results?
This also assumes someone has perfect health already. If you’ve got a person with celiac disease, yeast infection and allergies to rice, the person with type A diet following the example would be very ill by the end of the week.
I am Type A and have followed the diet successfully. I did find some of the bread hard to find at the time - this was about 9 years ago. I did lose weight and felt a ton better but the recommendations for no red meat and dairy etc are pretty much in line with my dislikes anyway. I suit a vegetarian diet because I like it and it makes me feel great! I don’t know about blood type influences, probably just eating healthier food and less sugar/junk is the key!
I have not tried the diet yet, but I am a type A. I have noticed throughout the years, that red meats, pastas, and potatoes don’t work well for me. I gain weight instantly (of course, I am being a bit dramatic.) I just know that when I eat red meat, I drag. When I eat pasta and diary I gain weight.
It could be a coincidence, but the information goes in alignment with my personal observations over the years. These observations were long before I read about the Blood Type Diet (today).

I have followed this diet for over a year. In the first month I lost 15 pounds. Since then I have lost another 50 pounds. I discovered that following this diet, that my body did have reactions to specific foods that caused weight gain. I grew very active on a large farm and thought I was always eating healthy. This diet however helped me see, that certain foods that I took for granted as being healthy, i.e., wheat, dairy, corn and pork products, were unhealthy for me. As I became older these foods became more of the issue why I had put on all that weight, so since finding out this information, it has been a real asset to not only weight loss, but also mental and emotional stamina, I feel much better about myself, and others.
I am a type O, and would recommend this way eating for all individuals. Also, since I am following this way of eating, I find that when I do satisfy those occasional, ‘wants’, that they don’t really effect me as before.
One other thing I have noticed is that my cravings for the improper foods isn’t there like before. Any comfort food has become the healthy foods. I even eat less and am only hungry when I need to refuel.
I can only positive comments results about this way of eating.
I know personally of others who have followed the plans outlined in this book by, Dr. Peter J. D’Adamo, and also have been and are continuing to successfully eat their way to a better life.
The best proof is the laboratory of your own body. Although useful, scientific research will never be more powerful then your own body feedback. The feedback we get (and don’t like) is the result of our choice of food intake (good and bad). We’re all intelligent, and know when we don’t look or feel our best. I’m a type O and didn’t need research to tell me I gain weight from starchy foods. My mirror did a fine job and said it all (no research grants needed here folks). After I took responsibility, and fine tuned what I ate, the weight started dropping off.
After eating the foods for my blood type, I don’t think I lost weight, but it looks like it because my body looks better and more healthy. My skin started glowing right after I stopped eating meat and I never felt better. This diet is worth a shot, and it is based on scientific proof, if you go to his website, all the scientific questions are explained.
Plus, don’t judge anything you haven’t tried or seen by your own eyes.
this diet is the best diet i have ever heard of! i have had awesome results and i have nevr been healthier in my life. i am a type a so when i stopped eating red meat and pork and only had chicken once a month i really felt less slugish! i had more energy and i felt more focused! i really don’t care what kind of things people say about this diet, i will stick by my diet plan because it was a life saver for me!
people sitting here complaining about what if you’re allergic to this or that! well there are other things you can eat on the list! don’t eat the things you are allergic to! come on are you realloy that pathetic that you would make up stupid stuff to degrade someones work who is trying to help all man kind!? this person that wrote the book(dr. peter j. d’adamo) is now my favorite person in the world. his book has helped me lead a healthier life. and someone said it is no longer a diet but a lifestyle, well i believe the same exact way. i once was a meat and potato kind girl, but once i got rid of the meat and ate healthier i felt so much better. more energy and able to focus so much better! all that processed junk and unhealthy food weigh you down and harm your body. i think people complain about it just refuse to change for the better, and don’t want it enough.
I will give it a try. I am a vegan. I am B blood type. I need help getting started. I have just gotten the hang of veganism, now more foods to avoid. Well if it is for me I must see.
I followed the BTD for O type…which I am…and in 1 year of following the eating and exercise portion almost to a “t”, I lost 68 pounds. I have struggled with weight all through my teens and early 20’s, and have dealt with the symptoms of IBS for the last 7 years. Eating according to my type, I’ve increased energy, lost weight and any “health” issue seemed to diminish! I later had to switch to the Innate Diet (practically all raw) and continued to see dramatic results. My metabolism has changed and now I’m able to enjoy more foods that I previously avoided and I feel fantastic! But…I hear that the “o” type is the only one that really works….
It is clear to me that the food suggestions presented by D’Adamo make complete and total sense to me…however…it is too bad that the Essene Bread is impossible to find!!

This diet have shown me exactly how unhealthy i have been living for the past two and a half years! Wow! Before this I was tired all the time and headaches and stuff were targeting me like crazy! now i have enough energy to move the world into another orbit! hehe. i have the O blood type and believe me it really works guys - a must try! enjoy!
well Kylie, I wish i could switch with you! my normal diet is of a type A.. i absolutely HATE meat, i just think it’s gross from every possible angle. i just found out I’m a type O, the carnivorous “hunter”.. yipes. this is going to be hard to start shoving veal & steak down my throat :s

This diet has been miraculous for me. I’ve lost weight and it solved many other problems for me. I’ve been a strict vegan with many health issues–improved a bit with Atkins, but still had haunting problems–but now I’m a wheatless, dairy-less carnivore Blood-Type dieter and I’ve never felt better. My husband is an A and he’s definitely a vegetarian to the bone and has never doubted that. I had to take the dietary journey to know my true constitution. In my mind, I’d rather be an A…but my body knows it’s an O. Amazing. By the way…my cholesterol and BP went DOWN eating meat and fat. Go figure.
I heard about this diet from my Homeopathic physician. I was a very healthy eater, drank lots of water but couldn’t manage to clear up my skin. I started the diet and within only 3 days, I had no new lesions on my skin and it was glowing. One of the forum people said that we just become aware of what we eat and don’t eat junk so “duh” it’s gonna work. I understand where they are coming from with this statement, but I was eating a vegan diet and still eating the wrong food for me everyday. This diet goes a step further to give you tested information so you’re not clammering around in the dark wondering why, or what should I eat.

I have eaten “healthy” foods for years but still had weight gain. I do NOT eat alot of junk food and I am a couch potato. So to say that its just a matter of eating healthy is missing the mark altogether. I am type B and as soon as I started to follow the plan, I lost weight within the first week. I am the biggest skeptic there is, but not with this diet. Also, the book says that you don’t have to be SUPER strict. You can eat foods on your avoid list, as long as it is occasionally and not regularly.
Bottom line, whether it seems logical or not, this diet WORKS!
Heart broken to be an A. Wishing I was an O. I love steak,and pork, especially pork roast, shrimp, smoked meats and fish….etc. But I am going to give it a try. Fish wont be a problem, but Tofu?
